Hidden Paradise in Western Sichuan|4 Days 3 Nights In-Depth Guide to Cuopu Valley
If you are already tired of the crowds at Daocheng Yading and the long queues at Jiuzhaigou, then this guide is made just for you. I will take you deep into the truly off-the-beaten-path secret of Western Sichuan—Cuopu Valley. This natural scenic area, located in Chaluo Township, Batang County, Ganzi Prefecture, with an average altitude of over 4000 meters, combines snow-capped mountains, lakes, forests, rivers, canyons, waterfalls, hot springs, grasslands, and temples. Yet, because it lies in the heart of the Hengduan Mountains, it remains little known, with even 99% of Sichuan residents never having set foot here. There are no entrance fees (possibly a sanitation fee), no crowded tourists, only the most pristine natural beauty and the purest outdoor experience.
1. Why Choose Cuopu Valley?
Extremely Off-the-Beaten-Path and Pristine Scenery:
Cuopu Valley (also known as Cuopu Lake) has never undergone large-scale development. It consists of multiple highland lakes including Cuopu Lake, Zhima Yongcuo, and Kangzhula Cuo, surrounded by Mount Zajinjia Bo (altitude 5833 meters). The lake water is crystal clear, showing enchanting blue-green hues, with scenery comparable to the lakes of Daocheng Yading but more tranquil and untouched. Due to the need for a certain drive to reach it, visitors are extremely rare here, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent snow-capped mountains and lakes all to yourself.
Rich Natural Scenery and Ecology:
Cuopu Valley gathers the essence of mountain and river landscapes, blending natural and cultural sights. Here you will find towering snow mountains, sparkling lakes (highland lakes), pristine forests, spectacular canyons, cascading waterfalls, natural hot springs, and vast grasslands. Even more captivating, schools of fish swim freely in Cuopu Lake; when you put your hand in the water, many fish will come to "kiss" your fingers, letting you fully experience the harmony between humans and nature.
Adjacent to Other Hidden Gems, Rich Route Combinations:
Many other off-the-beaten-path spots are distributed around Cuopu Valley, such as Batang County known as the "Jiangnan of the Plateau," the Sister Lakes (located on National Highway G318) praised as "Sacred Lakes," and the Tibetan Buddhist holy site Mount Genie. You can easily link them together to create a unique and in-depth Western Sichuan journey.
High Cost-Performance Travel Experience:
The scenic area currently may only charge a sanitation management fee (please refer to the latest actual situation), truly "beautiful scenery for free" (or low cost). Accommodation and dining prices nearby are also relatively affordable.
2. 4 Days 3 Nights In-Depth Itinerary (Departing from Chengdu)
Route Overview: Chengdu → Kangding (altitude acclimation) → Litang (World’s Highest City) → In-depth tour of Cuopu Valley → Batang → Return to Chengdu or continue deeper into the Yunnan-Tibet route
Total Distance: Loop of about 1500-1700 km
Suitable For: Travelers with high-altitude experience, nature lovers, and those seeking extremely off-the-beaten-path destinations. Not recommended for first-time high-altitude visitors.
Day 1: Chengdu - Kangding - Xinduqiao (about 380 km, 6-7 hours driving)
Driving Time and Road Conditions: Depart from Chengdu, take Yakang Expressway then National Highway G318. Roads are good, but the Zheduo Mountain section is prone to traffic jams, so an early start is recommended. Alternatively, take Provincial Road S434 via Honghaizi and Kangding Airport Road to Xinduqiao for better scenery and possibly avoid some congestion.
Accommodation Options:
Budget: Various guesthouses in Xinduqiao town, about 150-300 RMB/night (book in advance).
Comfort: “Senyu Cabin Homestay” in Xinduqiao (Jiagenba), standalone wooden cabins with good views and newer facilities, about 400-800 RMB/night.
Focus Today: Acclimate to altitude (Xinduqiao altitude about 3300 meters), avoid strenuous exercise, and do not bathe immediately. In the evening, visit Yuzixi or Gedilamu Sky City (cleaning/management fee required) to watch the sunset over Mount Gongga.
Day 2: Xinduqiao - Litang - Cuola Town (about 350 km, 6-7 hours driving)
Driving Time and Road Conditions: Continue along National Highway G318, passing Gaersi Mountain Tunnel, Scissors Bend Mountain Tunnel, and the “18 Bends of the Sky Road,” arriving at Litang, the “World’s Highest City” (altitude 4014 meters). From Litang, turn onto Provincial Road S459 (or follow road signs) toward Cuopu Valley’s Cuola Town (formerly Chaluo Township). Roads are mostly paved but some sections may have potholes, so drive carefully.
Accommodation Options: Few simple but clean guesthouses and inns near Cuola Town or the valley entrance, about 150-300 RMB/night. Alternatively, stay in Batang County town for better accommodation but more travel time to the scenic area the next day.
Focus Today:
Check in at the “Must Drive 318” sign at Litang West Gate. If time allows, briefly visit Changqing Chuer Monastery.
Enjoy the vast Maoya Grassland scenery along the way, with wildflowers and herds of cattle and sheep in summer.
Contact accommodation in advance and check the latest conditions for entering Cuopu Valley the next day (road, weather, etc.).
Day 3: In-Depth Tour of Cuopu Valley Core Area (6-8 hours total)
Valley Transportation: Currently, self-driving may be required to enter Cuopu Valley (some sections may require switching to local vehicles or hiking, please follow on-site instructions). Roads inside the valley are partly paved and partly unpaved dirt roads, an SUV or off-road vehicle is recommended.
Core Attractions:
Cuopu Lake: The lake area is charming and beautiful, with shimmering clear water. Be sure to try the fun of “calling fish”—when you make sounds by the lake, schools of fish will gather.
Zhima Yongcuo & Kangzhula Cuo: Two beautiful sister lakes with colorful waters, like a fairyland.
Hot Spring Group: Numerous hot spring vents along the way, steaming and very hot. Please be cautious and do not attempt to soak lightly.
Mount Zajinjia Bo: The majestic sacred mountain forms the backdrop of Cuopu Valley; remember to take photos.
Cuopu Monastery: A Nyingma sect monastery quietly nestled between the snow mountains and sacred lakes, adding a cultural touch to the scenery.
Dining: No dining services inside the valley; bring your own dry food, water, and energy supplies for lunch.
Accommodation: Same as the previous night; you can return to Cuola Town or Batang County for lodging, or (if allowed and conditions permit) camp at designated spots inside the valley (ensure safety and obtain permission from relevant authorities).
Day 4: Cuola Town/Batang - Sister Lakes - Xinduqiao - Chengdu (about 700 km, 10-12 hours driving)
Driving Time and Road Conditions: Return day with a long journey. First return to National Highway G318, passing the Sister Lakes (Love Sea), be sure to stop for sightseeing and photos. Then cross Haizi Mountain, Kazila Mountain passes, return to Xinduqiao, then via Kangding back to Chengdu. G318 road conditions are generally good but watch for speed controls and livestock on the road. If time is tight, consider staying another night in Xinduqiao or Kangding and split the drive back to Chengdu over two days.
End of Trip: Arrive in Chengdu, concluding an unforgettable secret journey.
