🚄 China High-Speed Rail: Dalian North Station → Shenyang Station (approx. 2 hours) 3-night, 4-day solo adventure. On the first day, I traveled from Dalian to Shenyang by high-speed rail. The subway trip from Dalian Airport to Dalian North Station takes about 23 minutes on Line 2. Being my first time on China's high-speed rail, I was a bit nervous about whether everything would go smoothly 💓. In the end, I boarded just fine by scanning my passport at the gate—no extra steps needed!! (I booked my tickets via Trip.com) 1. Enter the station (luggage screening happens here). 2. The gates open 15 minutes before departure, so wait in the massive airport-like waiting area until then (non-smoking). Dalian North Station is enormous, with plenty of restaurants and convenience stores. 3. Once the gates open, line up and scan your passport at the automatic turnstile to head to the platform (smoking is permitted on the platform). Even in 2nd class, there was plenty of legroom. The high-speed rail was quiet and fast! Arrived safely at Shenyang Station. The station building has a charming, nostalgic feel. 🍖 Dinner at a food stall in Shenyang’s famous "Caidianta Night Market." The night market is packed with stalls lining both sides of a 500-meter street! The Shenyang beer was ice-cold, and the lamb skewers and green beans were spicy and delicious 😆. 🏨 Hotel: Liaoning Guest House (formerly Mukden Yamato Hotel) Established in 1929, this classic hotel is a national cultural landmark located in Zhongshan Square in the heart of Shenyang. With its stunning Renaissance architecture, it’s no exaggeration to call it a living museum.

The main reason I didn't have any bad experiences was because I planned ahead and didn't have to wait in line for too long. What I ate in Dalian: 1. Xiding I ordered takeout from the Xinghai Square branch. I didn't take any pictures. They start giving out numbers at 4:00 PM, but you can order takeout anytime. I recommend just getting takeout, otherwise you'll need to arrive early because the lines are crazy. Neither of these dishes disappointed; they tasted quite good. The cheese shrimp balls were very tender, and the sea urchin dumplings were very juicy. I think the sea urchin dumplings were CNY 18 for two. 2. Wei'er Wei'er It was really juicy, completely different from the frozen-then-thawed grilled chicken wings you usually eat. The ice cream was also very good; the hot-and-cold sensation was quite unique. I also ordered oysters, butter beer, and seafood rice, which felt like they had the same seasoning. I still recommend going to Zhenghuangqi for oysters. The butter beer had a thick texture and was non-alcoholic, but it had a beer-like aftertaste. It got cloying towards the end, so I suggest ordering just one to try. The seafood rice had the same problem—it got cloying towards the end, but the shrimp inside was very fresh. I ordered directly by looking at the items in the seafood section; you can tell the seafood quality is very good. The BBQ seasoning was average and a bit salty. The sea worm rice bowl was just okay. I went to the Donggang branch around 11:00 PM; waiting for 5 or 6 tables was acceptable. If you have to wait a long time, I don't think it's worth it. The red wine poached pear was a pleasant surprise—very refreshing. Personally, I felt the steamed egg with sea urchin was a bit fishy. This was the meal I was most looking forward to on this trip to Dalian. I tried to book in advance but was told there were no tables for the next 5 days. However, we arrived at the restaurant at 10:00 AM the next day and managed to get the first seating at the bar at 10:30 AM. The sea urchin rice was CNY 368 per serving, about a medium bowl size. It comes with caviar and a small cup of tea to cleanse the palate. There's also a bit of wasabi in the rice; if you don't eat wasabi, remember to pick it out. The sea urchin is a mix of Bafun sea urchin and purple sea urchin. I think the sea urchin tasted better than at Zhenghuangqi; after all, you get what you pay for. I thought the seared sushi and foie gras sushi were just average. I suggest not ordering too much foie gras; there are two pieces in one sushi, and it gets cloying after a while. Venice Water City at 9:00 PM It's very lively, with some creative shops and restaurants. I recommend strolling around at night. Venice Water World is crowded, while Oriental Water City is less crowded. Walking through both water cities takes about 1 hour. Next to Venice is the Donggang Music Fountain Square. Nanshan Xiaoyucun is truly a long-standing local favorite, and I've been coming here for years. During the fishing season, seafood prices are reasonable, and the freshness is top-notch. I chose the seasonal swimming crabs; when you crack open the shell, it's full of meat. It tastes great on its own. The lobster meat isn't tough; it's very meaty. I order the sea urchin rice every time I visit; the sea urchin is very fresh and sweet, and it's amazing mixed with rice. Besides seafood, the restaurant also has many authentic home-style dishes and provides snacks and fruit; they pay good attention to detail. 🚕 In Lushun (Port Arthur), we unexpectedly lost our mobile signal, which led us to a place we hadn't planned on visiting—though we definitely should have. Our taxi driver, who was taking us around the key sights, insisted on the trip. 🧭 This place is the Lushun Museum (旅顺博物馆). The museum's exhibits are spread across two two-story buildings filled with all sorts of ancient artifacts. We spent quite a while wandering through the first building under our driver’s watchful eye. Just as we reached what we thought was the final exhibit, the driver showed us his translator app, which read: "The boss must see the mummy!" We laughed but followed our "tour guide" into the second building. It was filled with various metalware and porcelain—first on the ground floor, then the second... To be honest, I was ready to escape that pottery paradise, but then... 👀 It turned out that to the left of the ceramics hall, there’s a room with mummies. I kid you not ✝️! There's a male and a female mummy, both over 1,300 years old. To say we were blown away would be an understatement. Photography isn't allowed, though you can find a few sneaky shots on Google. However, I don't think any photo can truly capture the experience of seeing them with your own eyes. They are behind glass, but you can get close enough to see everything clearly. This is nothing like seeing Lenin or Ho Chi Minh in their mausoleums. 💯 Believe it or not, the museum is completely free. If you have a long overnight layover in Dalian, don't rush to book a hotel and definitely don't settle for a night at the airport. I’m sharing a travel hack that I would happily repeat myself. We landed in Dalian around 11:00 PM, and our next flight was at 6:00 AM. Dalian Airport is small, and the prospect of spending the entire night in those airport chairs didn't appeal to me at all. So, we grabbed a taxi and headed to the 24-hour spa complex, GORA RESORT. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip. ⭐ Personally tested 🚕 From the airport – about 15–20 minutes by car. The roads are practically empty at night, so the drive was very quick. In Didi, search for: Qiangluo Huatan Hot Spring Resort & Bath or the Chinese name: 蔷萝花潭·温泉度假洗浴 ♨️ Entry – 79 CNY for adults and 39 CNY for children. This price includes access to the complex: hot pools, saunas, relaxation areas, and all public facilities. 💆‍♀️ Pro-tip: Book the massage package. There is an option for about 199 CNY that includes both entry and a 90-minute massage. If you choose this, you don't need to pay the separate 79 CNY entry fee. 🧽 Body Scrub – about 10 CNY. This is pure bliss after a journey. Once you’ve been washed, scrubbed, and massaged, you feel like a brand new person. 😁 🍜 Dining – Food is available on-site. Meals are paid for separately. 😴 One very important point If you want a few hours of proper sleep, book a sleeping spot immediately upon arrival. I didn't do this. The complex was quite busy that night, and by the time we arrived, there were no designated sleeping spots left. I ended up sleeping in the common relaxation area on a daybed with a pillow under my head. It was fine, honestly. But after a 90-minute massage, my body was definitely hoping for a presidential suite. 😂 The complex offers many sleeping options: beds with TVs, private cabins, rooms for couples, and various lounge zones. So, I wouldn't recommend just showing up at night and hoping for the best. Why go to a SPA during a layover? Because instead of five or six hours in an airport chair, you get a completely different experience. Arrive → Shower → Soak in hot pools and saunas → Get a massage → Have a scrub → Rest → Return to the airport. We were on our way home, so this option felt especially wonderful. I boarded the plane clean, rested, and relaxed from the massage—and I slept through the flight effortlessly. I arrived home feeling like a human being, rather than being in a "don't talk to me for three days" state. 😁 💛 My Verdict If I have another long night layover in Dalian, I won't even think twice about what to do. I’m going straight to GORA RESORT. In my opinion, this is one of those Chinese travel hacks you really should know before your trip. Dalian is already famous for seafood, so if you like uni, this is one place I’d save. 🍚 My must-order: sea urchin rice The uni was served generously, and I loved the creamy texture with the egg yolk in the middle. 🍤 I also tried the sea urchin tempura, which was something I hadn’t had before and ended up being one of the most memorable dishes. 🍊 Even the fruit course and presentation were beautifully done, and the private-room style interior made the whole meal feel more special.
