I was wandering around Green Lake in Kunming when I noticed BA BON.APPÉTIT. Actually, it was difficult not to notice it. 😂There was a long queue in front of the bakery, and inside it was completely packed. Usually, when I see a queue this long, I think twice before joining it. But when traveling, a crowded local place always makes me curious. There must be a reason so many people are waiting. So I went in. The first thing that impressed me wasn't even the cakes. It was the open bakery. Behind the glass, you can actually watch the bakers working right in front of you. Bread and pastries are being prepared while customers are choosing what to buy. I stayed there for a while just watching them work. It gives the place a completely different feeling from a normal bakery where everything arrives already prepared from somewhere else. Then I saw the displays... and understood the queue. 😂 Fresh baguettes and rustic breads fill the shelves, while the counters are packed with pastries and colorful cakes. Strawberries, raspberries, figs, melon, pistachio, chocolate, visually, there is a lot going on. Some of the cakes honestly looked too beautiful to cut. What I also liked was the atmosphere. It is busy, noisy and crowded, but you can feel that the bakery is alive. People are choosing bread, staff are constantly moving, and behind them the bakers keep working. This isn't the place I would choose if I wanted a quiet coffee and an empty table. Come here for the bakery experience itself. And yes, you may have to wait. Sometimes the places I remember most are not the ones on my original plan. I was walking around Spring City 66 in central Kunming, surrounded by glass towers, modern offices and luxury shopping, when I noticed something that looked completely out of place. Hidden behind the trees was an old stone house. Of course, I had to investigate. 😂 As soon as I entered the garden, the atmosphere changed. The modern city was still only a few steps away, but suddenly I was walking between old trees, quiet paths and thick rough-stone walls. Then I discovered that this wasn't simply an attractive old house. The Stone House was built in 1937 as the private mansion of General Li Hongmo, a Yunnan military figure who served in important police and defense positions during the Republic of China period. The residence later became known simply as the Stone House because of its distinctive stone exterior. Its architecture immediately caught my attention. The building combines Western influences, including large windows and its unusual stone construction, with a traditional Chinese-style roof. That mixture gives it a character completely different from the modern buildings surrounding it. The house also saw some remarkable visitors. Historical accounts say prominent political and military figures were received here, including Chiang Kai-shek, Soong Mei-ling and American General Claire Chennault, famous for his connection with the Flying Tigers. I arrived toward the end of the day, and I think that made my visit even better. As daylight disappeared, the lights inside the mansion came on. The warm yellow windows against those cold gray stone walls created a beautiful atmosphere. I walked around the courtyard, photographed the garden and statues, and kept looking back at the building from different angles. But my favorite part was the contrast. Behind this house from 1937, modern Kunming rises almost directly above the trees. Old stone walls in front. Glass towers behind. Almost 90 years of the city's history visible in one scene. I didn't come here because it was on some famous Kunming must-see list. I simply noticed an interesting old building while exploring around Spring City 66 and followed my curiosity. Today I went to Western Hills in Kunming mainly for the mountain scenery, temples and views over Dianchi Lake. An art exhibition was definitely not part of my plan. While walking around, I noticed the IWE Art Museum and a large sign saying “A Window to Yunnan.” I was already there, and curiosity did what it usually does to me when I travel: I went inside. And I’m glad I did. After spending quite a while outside exploring Western Hills, suddenly I was standing in a quiet space surrounded by paintings. The atmosphere completely changed. What caught my attention most were the portraits. Faces, traditional clothing, colors and small details, I found myself stopping in front of several paintings much longer than I expected. Of course, my camera also became busy. 😂But what I enjoyed most was simply the surprise of finding art here. I had come looking for mountains, temples and views over Dianchi Lake, and somehow an art exhibition became part of the day too. This is something I increasingly appreciate when traveling around China. I can prepare a detailed plan, but then a small sign, an interesting building or an open door changes that plan for a while. And quite often, those unexpected discoveries give me some of my favorite memories, and definitely more photos. 😂 Would I come all the way to Western Hills only for this exhibition? Probably not. Western Hills itself is the main attraction. But if you are already here and enjoy paintings, photography or simply discovering something you weren't expecting, don’t walk past without having a look. There are so many photo opportunities; every shot is beautiful 📸 The name "1903" actually has a story behind it 👀 It comes from the year 1903, the period when Kunming began to embrace Western culture due to the construction of the Yunnan-Vietnam railway by France. This brought European influence, especially French style, to the city 🇫🇷 Therefore, this place was built to tell the story of "Kunming in the era of connecting with the world" through the European-style atmosphere you see today. Personally, I like it best in the evening. The light is beautiful, and the sky has a golden hue. I wasn't actually looking for a coffee shop. I was simply wandering around the Green Lake area in Kunming when I noticed a small path surrounded by plants and rocks. There was a coffee sign, but from outside I couldn't really understand what kind of place it was. So I walked in. My first thought was simple: this coffee shop looks lost inside a forest. Of course, I was still in central Kunming, not in a real forest. But once inside, the feeling was surprisingly different from the busy streets nearby. The café, Bean Great (北归咖舍), is surrounded by trees, hanging vines, rocks and thick plants. Stone paths go between the different seating areas, and bright orange umbrellas are scattered through the garden. It isn't perfectly polished, and that's actually what I liked about it. Some chairs are placed beside rocks. Others are squeezed between plants and trees. You walk up and down small stone steps to explore the place. The café building itself is quite simple and almost hidden behind all the greenery. I didn't come here because somebody recommended it. I didn't search for “the best coffee in Kunming.” I just saw something interesting while walking and decided to enter. Those unexpected discoveries are often my favorite part of traveling. After spending hours walking around Green Lake, this was also a good excuse to stop for a while, sit under one of the orange umbrellas and give my tired legs a rest. Is it worth crossing Kunming only for this café? Probably not. But if you're already visiting Green Lake, I think it's a very pleasant little stop. Have a coffee, enjoy the garden and take your time looking around. For me, it wasn't really about the coffee. I was wandering around the streets near Green Lake in Kunming, without looking for anything in particular, when this colorful little bakery suddenly caught my eye. The entrance was almost impossible to ignore. Pink and white flowers covered the storefront, and when I looked inside, even more flowers were hanging above the pastry counter. I wasn't hungry and hadn't planned to buy anything, but curiosity won. I stepped inside. That turned out to be a nice little discovery. The bakery, QISIMIAOXIANG (妙香臻选), specializes in traditional-style Chinese pastries, particularly Yunnan flower cakes. Behind the glass were rows of freshly baked pastries in different shapes and flavors. Some were simple and golden, while others were filled with rose petals or made into beautiful flower shapes. What interested me most was seeing how seriously the shop presents this local specialty. Signs inside advertise pastries freshly baked the same day, and several varieties were priced at only around 4–5 RMB each when I visited. The interior was also surprisingly elegant for such a small bakery: warm wooden decoration, modern lighting, colorful flowers everywhere and beautiful gift boxes arranged around the shop. It felt somewhere between a traditional pastry shop and a modern boutique. Kunming keeps giving me these little unplanned moments. Sometimes you don't need a famous attraction or a detailed itinerary. After spending hours wandering inside Yuantong Temple, one of Kunming’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples, I finally walked out and ordered my Didi. I thought my visit was finished. While standing outside waiting for the car, a small entrance nearby caught my eye. The traditional roof, old wooden façade, flowers and rich red-and-gold details looked too interesting to ignore. So, instead of simply waiting beside the road, I walked over for a closer look. Above the entrance I noticed the characters 千佛堂 — Thousand Buddha Hall. What I liked most was the contrast. Just moments earlier I had been exploring the much larger and historically important Yuantong Temple, whose history stretches back more than a thousand years. Here, only a short walk away, was a much smaller Buddhist space that I could easily have passed without noticing. The large 慈 character at the entrance means compassion or benevolence, an idea deeply connected with Buddhist teaching. Around it are traditional tiled roofs, beautifully painted wooden brackets, carved doors and small decorative details that deserve a closer look. It wasn't a place I had planned to visit. There was no checklist and no long search for it. I found it simply because I looked around while waiting for my Didi. These unexpected discoveries are becoming one of my favorite parts of traveling in China. Famous temples and museums tell you the big story, but sometimes a small doorway beside the street gives you another glimpse of the history and traditions that are still part of everyday life. 📍 Thousand Buddha Hall (千佛堂), near Yuantong Temple, Kunming 🚶 Transportation tip: If you are already visiting Yuantong Temple, explore the immediate area on foot before leaving. Who would have thought that ‘tofu’ would lead us to a “Tofu Village” with a history spanning over 600 years? 📍 七步场 – Kunming This is an ancient village where the entire community’s lives are tied to “tofu.” The name “七步场” literally translates to “Seven Steps Market.” In the past, it was a trading post, and gradually became a community renowned for tofu making. The amazing thing is: Almost every household here “makes its own tofu,” passed down through generations, until it became a truly authentic tofu village. The walls you see aren’t just for photos, but they tell the story of the real lives of the villagers. From grinding beans from dawn till dusk, to carrying tofu on poles to sell all day, to support their families. 📖 During World War II, Kunming was an important base, and tofu became a staple food for the people of that era. There’s also a small exhibition inside. It tells the story from the origins of tofu to every step of the traditional method of making it. ✨ What I felt most was: This place isn't trying to be beautiful, but it's "alive." Some places aren't amazing because of the view, but they make you stop and think…because of the story. Sometimes the most interesting travel moments are the ones you never planned. I was traveling by train from Nanning to Kunming when we made a short stop at Baise Railway Station in Guangxi. I stepped outside for a cigarette and to stretch my legs while waiting for the train to continue. I expected nothing more than a few minutes on the platform. But almost immediately, something caught my attention. Along the station walls were large photographs, paintings and displays showing soldiers, monuments and scenes connected to China's revolutionary history. There were so many that I stopped walking and started looking more carefully. My first question was simple: Why is there so much revolutionary history displayed at this railway station? What happened in Baise? That was when I discovered the story behind the city. 📖 Why Baise Is Historically Important Baise is closely associated with the Baise Uprising of December 1929, an important episode in the early revolutionary history of the Chinese Communist movement. Several of the displays at the station refer directly to this history. One shows the Baise Uprising Martyrs Monument, while others depict revolutionary scenes and historical locations connected with that period. What I particularly liked was the way the station itself introduced me to the story. I hadn't searched for Baise before arriving. I hadn't planned a museum visit or historical tour. In fact, I wasn't even planning to leave the railway station. I simply stepped off the train for a cigarette. 📸 Travel Is Also About Curiosity I had only a short time before departure, so I took several photographs and continued looking at the displays until it was time to get back on the train. Of course, this wasn't enough to properly discover Baise. But it was enough to make me curious about the city and its history. A few minutes later, I was sitting on the train again, continuing toward Kunming. That's something I increasingly enjoy about traveling across China. Not every discovery needs to be a famous attraction or something carefully planned in advance. Sometimes you change trains. Sometimes you walk down the wrong street. And sometimes you step onto a railway platform for ten minutes and discover a chapter of history you knew nothing about. Kunming is beautiful, but I really don't recommend visiting in September–October❗❗ Take my advice and don't force it!! Don't be fooled by the 9-grid photo collages of "the Spring City's eternal 20°C, Dianchi Lake sunsets, Haigeng Dam black-headed gulls, Stone Forest light and shadows, Cuihu Park's yellow buildings, Nanqiang Street grilled tofu, and Fuxian Lake's jelly-like water." Kunming is a scattered highland map pieced together from "downtown old streets + Dianchi Lake and Western Hills + Stone Forest suburbs + Dongchuan Red Land + Fuxian Lake + Yangzonghai." In September–October, the "Spring City" filter is just a mix of "end-of-rainy-season showers lottery, fog at Western Hills and Dianchi Lake, no black-headed gulls yet, National Day crowds everywhere, and UV rays that bite even on cloudy days." 🚫 Why I advise against visiting in September–October 1️⃣ September isn't the "peak of the Spring City," it's the most unpredictable end of the rainy season Kunming is 22–26°C during the day and 15–17°C in the mornings and evenings in September. It looks comfortable, but showers/thunderstorms pop up randomly in the afternoon: September 18 showers, 21 showers, 22 cloudy to showers, 26 light rain, 27 overcast to light rain, 28 light rain... You plan to visit the Stone Forest in the morning, Dianchi Lake at noon, Western Hills Dragon Gate in the afternoon, and Cuihu Park in the evening, but an afternoon rain hits: the Stone Forest rocks get hot and wet, the Western Hills Dragon Gate gets foggy and you can't see anything, Dianchi Lake turns gray-green, and the wind at Cuihu Park makes you shiver. It's not that it doesn't rain in the Spring City; it's that "it looks nice, but turns on you after 11:00 AM." 2️⃣ The biggest fear for Western Hills + Dianchi Lake in September is "fog locking the highland lake" Many people rush to Kunming for the "overlook of Dianchi Lake from Western Hills Dragon Gate + water and sky merging at Haigeng Dam." In September–October, humidity after the rain is high, and the Western Hills are often foggy. Looking out from the Dragon Gate window, you don't see "500 miles of Dianchi Lake," but "500 meters of white soup." Haigeng Dam also lacks its main attraction in September—the advance guard of black-headed gulls doesn't arrive until early October, and the main flock doesn't arrive until November. Visiting in September–early October means windy dams, gray water, no gulls, and no great photos. 3️⃣ The 8 days of the National Day holiday = Stone Forest, Dianchi Lake, Western Hills, Guandu, Nanqiang Street, and Fuxian Lake are all packed Usually, September is okay, but once National Day hits: · Stone Forest tickets (CNY 130 + battery car + direct bus) keep adding up, and tour groups occupy Ashima and Wangfeng Pavilion · Haigeng/Dianchi Lake cruise ships and the Western Hills cable car have long lines · Nanqiang Street, Jinma Biji Archway, and Kunming Old Street are shoulder-to-shoulder; you have to wait for grilled tofu and line up for flower cakes · Fuxian Lake (Lucheng/Gushan/Starry Sky Town) hotel prices spike; you pay double for lake-view rooms during the holiday, suffer through the Golden Week, and might not even snag a regular bus to the Stone Forest 4️⃣ The suburbs are too scattered; without a car, you're feeding your vacation to the Kunming-Shilin Expressway and winding mountain roads Stone Forest (1.5 hours), Jiuxiang (1.5–2 hours), Dongchuan Red Land (2.5–3 hours), Fuxian Lake (1+ hour), Yangzonghai (1 hour)... If you're a first-timer planning a big loop of "Kunming + Stone Forest + Jiuxiang + Dongchuan + Fuxian Lake + Mile," it equals sleeping in the car, taking photos when you get off, and rebooking hotels at night. Dongchuan Red Land is nice when the soil is turned in September, but it's at 2,500m altitude, windy, has no shade, and chartering a car is expensive. Fuxian Lake's water is okay in September, but after National Day, it's too cold at night to want to leave your tent. 5️⃣ Black-headed gulls are the soul of Kunming in autumn and winter; you'll miss them if you come in September–October The most photogenic scenes in Kunming: thousands of black-headed gulls at Haigeng Dam, flocks of gulls skimming the water in front of the yellow buildings at Cuihu Park, and the yellow Chinese hackberry trees + gulls flying at Huanxi Bridge. The advance guard of black-headed gulls only arrives at Haigeng East Pier in early October, and the main flock doesn't arrive until November. If you come to Cuihu Park in September: the lake is there, but the gulls aren't, and photos look like a "regular city park." If you come October 1–7: there are barely any gulls, but 10,000 people. 6️⃣ Highland UV rays + day-night temperature difference, your body will be the first to sound the alarm Kunming's UV rays are harsh even on cloudy days; if you don't apply SPF 50+, your face will be red and peeling in two days. Short sleeves during the day, but you'll need a light jacket as soon as the wind blows at Dianchi Lake/Fuxian Lake after 5:00 PM. The Western Hills Dragon Gate steps are steep, the Stone Forest has no shade, and Dongchuan Red Land has poor wind protection. Wearing a Hanfu skirt + white shoes = rocks scratching the fabric, mud splatters, and wind chilling your legs. 7️⃣ End of wild mushroom season + tourist trap dining September is the tail end of the wild mushroom season; some mushrooms are still edible, but "wild mushroom hot pot at CNY 198–298/pot" is a tourist-trap price, and it's easy to get sick if they aren't cooked thoroughly. Nanqiang Street, Guandu Ancient Town, and the Stone Forest entrance: "deluxe cross-bridge rice noodle sets, flower cake gift boxes, and intangible cultural heritage grilled milk fans" are more valuable for photos than taste. The real local flavor is in: Danshi small-pot braised rice noodles, regular rice noodles at Jianxinyuan/Qiaoxiangyuan, Guandu cold rice noodles, Fuzhaolou steam pot chicken (don't order the most expensive set), and old street pea jelly—not the loudest influencer-famous signs. 📅 When is the right time? ✅ November–December: Black-headed gulls arrive, Cuihu/Haigeng are legendary, 18–22°C during the day, clean sunshine—this is the true "Spring City moment" for Kunming. ✅ March–May: Jacaranda (late April–May), Yuantong Mountain cherry blossoms, Dianchi Lake isn't stuffy, fewer people than National Day—the most reliable time for a first visit. ✅ September 10–25 (non-weekends): More comfortable than National Day, but you must accept "possible afternoon rain, no seagulls, and possible fog at Western Hills." ❌ Early–mid September: Lots of showers, Western Hills fog, inconsistent photo opportunities. ❌ October 1–7: Stone Forest traffic jams, Dianchi Lake crowds, Fuxian Lake price spikes, black-headed gulls haven't arrived yet. 🚨 Self-rescue guide if you must go in September–October · If it's your first time, don't plan a big loop of "Stone Forest + Jiuxiang + Dongchuan + Fuxian Lake + Mile." Choose either "2 days in downtown Kunming (Cuihu + Military Academy + Old Street + Dianchi Lake sunset)" or "half a day at Stone Forest + 1 day at Fuxian Lake." · If coming in September: Arrive at the Stone Forest before 8:30 AM, hide indoors/at the Yunnan Provincial Museum/Military Academy after 11:00 AM, and go to Haigeng to watch the sunset at 4:30 PM. Wait until November when the black-headed gulls land, the wind at Haigeng Dam is full of the sound of wings, the yellow buildings at Cuihu Park reflect the winter sun, and the small-pot rice noodles are steaming hot—that's when "the Spring City is willing to slowly offer you its softest side"🕊️🍜

I happened to walk past this spot in the pedestrian shopping district and decided to give it a try. It was incredibly delicious! The flavor is authentic, just like being in Thailand.
