Wet markets, old streets, teahouses, sunsets—the soul of this city isn't in the tourist attractions. ✨ Hidden gems unlocked on my second visit Zhuanxin Farmers Market: The starting point for your Kunming appetite. Diving into Zhuanxin at 8:00 AM is the right way to experience Kunming. Tofu pudding rice noodles, grilled erkuai (rice cakes), chicken feet with litsea cubeba, freshly pounded roasted eggplant—eat as you walk, always holding something in your hand. You can't go wrong with any popular deli stall in the prepared food section. Buy your food and sit on the steps at the market entrance to eat, surrounded by locals. Around Green Lake: A free museum. Green Lake is free, but the area around it is even better to explore. The yellow walls of the Yunnan Military Academy, the plane trees on Wenlin Street, the independent coffee shops on Qianju Street—just walk around, and you might find surprises in any alley you turn into. Find a coffee shop at 3:00 PM and sit until 4:00 PM; the sunlight filtering through the plane tree leaves onto the table is more healing than checking off any tourist attraction. Daguan-Zhuanxin Old District: The Kunming that hasn't been leveled yet. In the area around Qianju Street, Ranbu Lane, and Cangyuan Lane, you can still see what old Kunming looked like. Day 7 Cont'd: After visiting the "Windy Place" in Fengyangyi, we headed to Dali Ancient City to check out the historical architecture and catch a view of Cangshan Mountain from afar. Walking through the city gate and heading up to the tower offers a panoramic view of the distant Cangshan Mountain and the historic buildings below. The architecture makes you feel like you've stepped onto the set of a period drama, traveling back in time to the ancient worlds seen in TV shows. Beyond the preservation of these historical sites, they have been infused with a modern commercial vibe, now housing trendy tea shops, sportswear stores, and more. Of course, local "intangible cultural heritage" eateries are also a must-see. I was even amazed to see the Big Four banks operating inside these historic buildings—truly a blend of history and modernity! 😄 It's a pity I can't fit all the photos here. Even though it started pouring while we were exploring the ancient city, it didn't dampen our spirits or stop us from taking photos as we walked. 😂 We ducked into a tea shop, ordered a drink ☕, and waited for the rain to let up, taking a moment to slow down and rest. This is what a relaxing holiday is all about. 😅 No matter which way you turn, you can always see Cangshan Mountain in the distance. See snow mountains · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Meili Snow Mountain November is the most beautiful time of year at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain—the snow on the peak is thickest and the weather is most stable. The water in Blue Moon Valley is the bluest, and the mountain reflections are clearest. At Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain has the highest chance of showing the “sunlit snow-capped mountain” in November, when the sunrise lights up the peak and the whole mountain turns golden. See ancient towns · Off-season in Dali and Lijiang In November, Dali and Lijiang have only one-third of the visitors compared to peak season. Cycling along the west shore of Erhai Lake is the best experience, a 40 km ride from Caicun to Xizhou, with the lake on your right and mountains on your left. Stay one night in Shaxi, where the streets are empty after 9 PM. Lijiang Old Town is more atmospheric at night than during the day, and Shuhe Ancient Town is quieter than Dayan.
