Mangkam Songtsen Rumai Resort is located in Mangkam County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The guest rooms are very large and comfortable, the public areas are also much larger, and most importantly, the surrounding environment is very good, facing the Lancang River. The price-performance ratio for a house price of around 1,000 is still acceptable. If I have the chance, I will still deliberately stay here. However, if the housing prices soar like a runaway horse in the future, I will definitely pass by it. After all, this is all there is to see here. Many people may not be familiar with Qamdo. Located in eastern Tibet, where the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nu rivers converge, it features almost every plateau landscape you can imagine: snow-capped mountains, glaciers, canyons, grasslands, ancient temples, salt fields, and more. Because transportation is less convenient than in Lhasa, it hasn't seen many visitors, which is exactly why its primitive and pure nature remains so precious. I've put together a 4-day itinerary for you—just follow it. Day 1: Qamdo city | Qiangbalin Monastery + confluence of two rivers Don't plan a long trip on your first day in Qamdo; focus on acclimating to the altitude in the city first. You must visit Qiangbalin Monastery, the largest Gelug sect monastery in eastern Tibet, which is free to enter. Built on a terrace, the monastery features layers of red walls and golden roofs that look stunning from a distance. I recommend going around 8:00 AM to catch the monks chanting. The deep, resonant chanting echoes through the prayer hall, instantly calming your mind. Follow the local elders as they walk clockwise around the monastery, spinning the prayer wheels one by one. The sense of ritual will fill you with respect for this land. From the monastery's platform, you can overlook the confluence of the Zaqu and Angqu rivers. The two rivers have different water colors, creating a distinct and magical boundary where they meet. You can spend the afternoon wandering around the city. Qamdo isn't large, but the Tibetan-style architecture and the local Tibetan people going about their daily lives will make you feel like this is a real, living Tibetan city, not just a tourist attraction. Day 2: Bangda Grassland + Nujiang 72 Bends + Ranwu Lake This day involves a long journey, so I recommend leaving early. Head south along the G318 National Highway, passing through the Bangda Grassland at an altitude of 4,400 meters. In summer, the meadows are a vibrant green, rolling like waves in the wind. With yaks and sheep grazing on the grassland and snow-capped mountains in the distance, every photo you take looks like a desktop wallpaper. Continuing forward, you'll reach Yela Mountain. Looking down from the mountain pass, you get a panoramic view of the Nujiang 72 Bends—a road with countless twists and turns spiraling from the top to the bottom of the valley, offering a powerful visual impact. If you're driving, take it slow; the road is steep and winding, so safety first. After reaching the valley floor, follow the Nujiang River Canyon. The river water is muddy and turbulent, flanked by steep cliffs, creating a desolate and magnificent atmosphere that's hard to describe in words. Arrive at Ranwu Lake in the evening. The name means "goat milk lake" in Tibetan, and the water is a milky blue color. Backed by snow-capped mountains, it's free to visit. I recommend staying in Ranwu Town and visiting the lake again the next morning. When there's no wind at dawn, the water surface is like a mirror, with the reflection of the snow-capped mountains as clear as a painting. Day 3: Laigu Glacier + in-depth tour of Ranwu Lake Laigu Glacier is the largest glacier group in Tibet, with an admission ticket costing over CNY 100. It takes about 40 minutes to drive there from Ranwu Town, and you'll need to transfer to a sightseeing bus at the entrance. At the foot of the glacier lies Laigu Village, a small Tibetan village with stone houses surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers, like a hidden paradise. There are two routes to view the glacier. One takes you close to the glacial lake, where you can see the glacier tongue extending into the water, with blue ice blocks glistening in the sunlight. The other is a hike to the viewing platform for a panoramic view of the entire glacier group, offering a wider perspective. If you have the energy, I recommend doing both, as the glacier looks completely different from different angles. I went in the autumn, and there was still some unmelted blue ice by the glacial lake. Touching it felt icy cold, and that chill from a thousand years ago traveled from my fingertips to my heart—it was truly magical. In the afternoon, head back to Ranwu Lake and take a slow drive along the lakeside road. The upper, middle, and lower sections of Ranwu Lake each have their own beauty. Find a quiet spot to stop, sit by the lake, and just zone out, listening to the sound of the water and the wind. It's a truly purifying experience. Day 4: Return trip or continue to Yanjing If you have enough time, I highly recommend continuing south to visit the ancient salt fields in Yanjing, Markam. It's about a four-hour drive from Ranwu. On the hillsides along the Lancang River, salt fields are spread out like a palette, with white and pink colors intermingled. Women carrying wooden buckets weave through the salt fields, a scene that has continued for over 1,300 years. Yanjing also has a Catholic church, which is quite unique with its blend of Tibetan architectural style and Western religious elements. 🏠 About accommodation This time, I stayed at a guesthouse in downtown Qamdo converted from a traditional Tibetan stone house. The exterior retains the traditional stone walls and trapezoidal windows, but the interior features modern, comfortable decor. The room was spacious, with Tibetan carpets, thangkas on the walls, and hand-woven cushions on the bed. The window faced the distant snow-capped mountains. Waking up in the morning and opening the curtains to see the "golden mountain" illuminated by the sun was a breathtaking sight that words cannot describe. The guesthouse has a fireplace in the common area where everyone sat around chatting in the evening, and the owner would brew butter tea for us—the atmosphere was wonderful. The hot water was plentiful; being able to take a comfortable hot shower on the plateau is so important.

The Renkang Ancient House stands quietly in the alleys, with stories of generations settled within its earthen walls. The Wuliang River meanders like a snake, flowing across the Maoya Grassland. Wetlands and waters are scattered about, and heaven and earth return to silence. Ancient glaciers have retreated, carving out the glacial Sister Lakes. 1️⃣ Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan In Ganzi during August–September, daytime temperatures are around 20°C, but you'll need a jacket at night. Depart from Chengdu, take the 🚄 to Kangding, then transfer. Xinduqiao is your first stop. Don't rush to take photos; check in first. The evening light turns the poplar trees golden, and any bend in the road makes for a great shot. Mugecuo is less crowded in the morning, and the lake is as still as a mirror. Remember to wear non-slip shoes, as the boardwalks can be dewy. Admission and shuttle bus for Daocheng Yading cost over 200. If you take the long route, bring an oxygen canister and a raincoat. It gets windy on the mountain after 3:00 PM, so head down early. For glaciers in Hailuogou, the cable car is easier, but if you're fit, the hiking trail offers a closer view of the ice tongue. ⚠️ Book accommodation in Yading Village in advance during peak season; finding a room on-site is expensive and dirty. To keep the budget under 3,000, stay in hostels and Tibetan guesthouses throughout the trip. 2️⃣ Guiyang City | Guizhou Guiyang is truly cool in the summer, and it can even get a bit cold in the morning and evening. Tianhetan is a 30-minute drive from the city center. Admission and boat tickets cost just over 100. The caves and waterfalls are connected; the whole tour takes 2 hours. It's best to go in the morning when the light shines into the caves. Visit Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. Trotters and rose candy are must-haves, but don't buy them on the main street; walk two alleys in and the price is half. Gaopo Yunding Grassland is best in the evening. It's windy, so bring a light jacket. Seeing the sunset and sea of clouds depends on luck, but the grassland is free. Huaxi Park is in the city center. Admission is 10. It's where locals go for walks and a good place to rest if you're tired. 🍜 For breakfast, try Changwang noodles with crispy pork and blood curd for 12 a bowl. ⚠️ It rains unexpectedly in Guiyang, so carry an umbrella and don't trust the weather forecast. Choose accommodation near Penshuichi for easy access to attractions; you can find a nice place for 150 per person. 3️⃣ Datong City | Shanxi Datong's prices are impressive. Yungang Grottoes admission is 120, but the audio guide is 20. I recommend renting one, or you'll just be looking at things without context. It's best to visit the grottoes in the morning when the light hits the Buddha statues at an angle, making their expressions vivid. It gets crowded after noon, which ruins the experience. Hanging Temple is in Hunyuan County, over an hour's drive from the city. Admission including the climbing fee is over 100. If you're afraid of heights, just looking from below is fine; it's not that special up there. Visit Mount Heng and the Hanging Temple together. Take the cable car up and walk down; the whole trip takes 4 hours. If you're not very fit, don't push yourself. ⚠️ Don't eat Daoxiao noodles at the entrance of tourist spots. Go to old shops in the city for 8 a bowl, with free extra sauce. Stay near the ancient city wall to enjoy the night view; it costs about 100 per person. 🚄 A taxi from Datong South Station to Yungang Grottoes costs around 20.
