This article skips the overdone spots and picks a few places with strong seasonal vibes and contrasting experiences—some wild enough to watch cranes in the reeds, some artistic with century-old academies tucked in old streets, and some that keep you coming back just for a giant Buddha and spicy hot pot. Can you guess which one is most often overlooked? 01 Jincheng | Shanxi 📍 Huangcheng Xiangfu Ecological Cultural Tourism Area. Don’t be fooled by the name “Huangcheng” (Imperial City); this is actually the old residence of Chen Tingjing, a famous Qing dynasty prime minister. The gray brick walls get scorching in the sun, making you sweat if you walk around in summer, but step into the Shutang Alley inside the city and the breeze cools you down enough to want a jacket. ⏰ Recommended to arrive around 3 PM. Start by exploring the inner city and the Heshan Tower, then climb the city wall to overlook the tightly packed rooftops—the sunset turns the tiles a fiery gold, and the shadows stretch across the stone paths, looking ten times better than at noon. 🍜 Walk 800 meters east from the scenic area to a small restaurant called “Xiangfu 88 Banquet.” For about 40 yuan per person, you can enjoy a feast featuring braised liver and sweet and sour meatballs. ⚠️ Don’t buy “homemade vinegar” from street vendors at the entrance; it tastes bland and is overpriced. If you have time, detour to Guoyu Ancient City, where the handmade noodle stalls on the street are popular with locals. 02 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang Zhalong Ecotourism Area is the wildest stop on this trip. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Qiqihar Station. Try to catch the first opening at 8:30 AM when humidity is high in the reeds and the red-crowned cranes’ wings buzz the air as they take flight. I stood on the crane viewing platform that day, and a crane flew just two meters above my head—the sound of its feathers cutting through the air was like tearing fabric. ⚠️ Don’t wear white shoes! The mud and bird droppings on the boardwalk will ruin them. ⏰ There are two daily flight shows (9:30 AM and 3:30 PM). The morning show is best to see the cranes take off; in the afternoon, there are more tourists and the cranes are lazier. 🍜 In the city, try “Twelve Loyal Hand-Pulled Noodles.” The beef broth is rich and clings to the thin noodles, served with a side of tiger salad. You’ll be sweating after eating. Avoid the popular “Crane City BBQ” with two-hour lines and meat that’s not as good as grilling it yourself. 03 Shenzhen | Guangdong Shenzhen isn’t just skyscrapers and malls. 📍 Dameisha Seaside Park—avoid crowded spots and walk west to the end of the boardwalk, where small crabs hide in the reef crevices. The 5 PM light turns the sea into scattered gold. ⏰ Traffic jams start around 4 PM on weekends. Take Metro Line 8 to Yantian Road Station, then transfer to a bus or taxi to save half an hour. 🍜 After Dameisha, head to “Shigonghui” on Yantian Seafood Street. Their salt and pepper mantis shrimp and ginger scallion crab are signature dishes. It costs just over 100 yuan per person and is more reliable than the touristy stalls inside the scenic area. If you have kids, go straight to Overseas Chinese Town Resort, which has a large lawn and fountains where children can run around all afternoon. I don’t recommend Window of the World—it’s expensive and full of miniature models that look fake in photos. ⚠️ Guanlan Lake Leisure Tourism Area is far from downtown and best for golf or hotel stays. Don’t go there just to sightsee. 04 Ningde | Fujian Xiapu tidal flats are legendary among photographers, but I prefer their everyday charm. 📍 Beiqi tidal flats. Arrive by 5:30 AM to claim a spot. After the tide recedes, bamboo pole shadows stretch across the water, and fishermen wade through the mud carrying nets, each step a struggle. ⏰ Don’t obsess over sunrise. In autumn and winter, the light after 4 PM is gentler, and the tidal flats reflect like shattered mirrors. 🍜 In Xiapu County, try “Xin Meiwei Garden” for fish ball soup and fried rice noodles. The fish balls are springy, and the broth has scallions and vinegar. ⚠️ Taimu Mountain Scenic Area shows a different side—take the bus halfway up, then hike the “One Line Sky” trail, which is narrow enough to require sideways walking. Not recommended for overweight visitors. Baishuiyang and Yuanyang Creek are nearby. In summer, you can wade in the shallow water up to your ankles, but the stones are slippery—I fell hard, so don’t copy me. 05 Leshan | Sichuan Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei are close but offer very different experiences. 📍 Leshan Giant Buddha—don’t buy boat tickets; it’s crowded and hard to see. Enter from the north gate, walk down the winding plank road to the Buddha’s feet. Elderly people play chess on top while busy traffic flows below. The moss growing between the bricks feels cool to the touch. ⏰ Visit around 5 PM when the light is just right and the wall’s shadow stretches long. 🍜 After descending, turn into Gaozheng Street and try “Zhouji Noodle Shop.” Order shredded pork noodles with a fried egg. The broth is made from pork bones, and the spice melts on the back of your tongue. ⚠️ Don’t take the cable car from the south gate of Yuelu Mountain; the line is an hour long. It’s better to hike from the east gate, which takes half an hour to the top and passes Aiwan Pavilion. The Provincial Museum requires booking three days in advance; otherwise, you can only see the empty grounds outside. Huaminglou (Liu Shaoqi’s former residence) is in Ningxiang, far from the city. If you’re not interested in modern history, skip it—it’s at least a three-hour round trip, better to spend more time enjoying noodles. 07 Huzhou | Zhejiang 📍 Nanxun Ancient Town—the biggest difference from Wuzhen and Xitang is that locals still live here. At 3 PM, smoke from coal stoves drifts through the alleys, and an old woman sits at her door shelling broad beans. Under the eaves of the Hundred-Room Building, the stone slabs are polished shiny and creak underfoot. 🍜 Opposite the former residence of Zhang Shiming is “Zhuangyuan Lou.” Their Ding Sheng cake just out of the oven has a rice fragrance wrapped around red bean paste, costing 2 yuan each. ⚠️ Don’t buy the “Nanxun crisp candy” sold on the street for 10 yuan for three boxes—it tastes like flour. ⏰ To get photos without people, arrive before 7 AM when shops are closed and morning mist rises from the river. The white walls and black tiles look like they’re submerged in water. At night, take a hand-rowed boat; the lantern reflections scatter on the water, a hundred times quieter than the bar street. 08 Anshun | Guizhou 📍 Huangguoshu Waterfall—don’t just focus on the main waterfall. Walk to Tianxing Bridge; the caves and Silver Chain Hanging Pool in the lower section are the real highlights. When the water is high, the mist in the Water Curtain Cave can soak you like a drenched chicken. Remember to wear a raincoat. ⏰ Enter the park at 8 AM to avoid tour groups and catch rainbows arching over the falls. 🍜 After the waterfall, go to Anshun city for “Duoduo Rice Noodle Hot Pot.” The sour and spicy broth cooks rice tofu and meat slices. About 30 yuan per person fills you up. ⚠️ Longgong is a half-hour drive from Huangguoshu, with large underground rivers and caves. The full tour takes two hours, so it’s not recommended for elderly or children. If you’re short on time, just visit Huangguoshu. 🚄 It’s very convenient to take the high-speed train from Guiyang North Station to Anshun West Station in 30 minutes, then a taxi to the scenic area for about 40 yuan. Conclusion: Among these 8 cities, I personally recommend Jincheng and Leshan the most—one is surprisingly off the beaten path, the other so delicious I want to move there.
