Located in Toutai Town, Yixian, Jinzhou, next to the Wanfo Hall Grottoes, this fossil treasure trove of the Liaoxi Jehol Biota is also Liaoning’s first paleontology museum co-established with foreign investment. It is the discovery site of the Yixian Bolshilong and houses a large collection of rare fossil specimens, complete geological profiles, petrified forests, and restored dinosaur skeletons. We stayed in the Furong courtyard 🌿 which was already very fun. Unexpectedly, there are also sika deer and marmots on the mountain 🌴 a creek flowing into the river with ducks and swans. The entire town hides 3 nationally protected ancient sites, with little commercialization and a lively local atmosphere, making it perfect for family cultural and museum trips. 📝 One-day highlights route: Yixian old train station → Guangsheng Temple pagoda → Fengguo Temple → Antai Gate → Wanfo Hall grottoes. Another November Monday turned out to be surprisingly clear and warm. The red thermometer outside the window joyfully crossed 10°C and, clearly hinting that I'd be able to get some sleep in retirement (meaning someday, not now), called me to hit the road again. Somewhere... This time, that "somewhere" turned out to be the Fengguo Temple, located in the small provincial town of Jinzhou, with a population of about two million. The Fengguo Temple was founded over a thousand years ago, in 1020, during the Liao Dynasty. Today, very little evidence remains about the temple's historical past. Historians have gleaned the lion's share of their information from inscriptions on the temple steles. According to surviving sources, the temple was founded by the Chinese scholar Jiao Xiyun, and its construction was supervised by the Buddhist monk Qingheu. In 1290, the temple was partially destroyed by an earthquake. Its restoration was funded by one of the Mongol khans. By the early 14th century, the temple had grown significantly in size and at that time consisted of a hall of the Seven Buddhas, a kitchen, monastic quarters, a bathhouse, and several other rooms. The main hall (Mahavira Hall, also known as the Hall of the Seven Buddhas) of the temple houses seven enormous statues of the main Buddhist deity, dating from different historical periods. It is one of the three remaining major Liao Dynasty temples in China (along with Huayan Temple in Shanxi and Fengguo Temple in Liaoning), renowned at home and abroad for its "three wonders": ancient architecture, clay sculptures, and murals. The main buildings also include the Qianlong Palace, which houses 28 imperial inscriptions by Emperor Qianlong, a scale rarely seen in China. Dule Temple is listed among the eight great Liao structures because of its Shanmen Gate and Guanyin Pavilion. Very few wooden structures from the Liao Dynasty have survived to this day, and Dule Temple is recognized as a national treasure-level relic. The Shanmen Gate is the earliest existing palace-style roof gate in China, featuring the highest roof level. The dougong brackets are grand, and the eaves extend far like a great roc spreading its wings, full of the majestic beauty of Tang style. Above the gate hangs a plaque inscribed with the three characters "Dule Temple," said to be the work of Yan Song, a powerful minister of the Ming Dynasty. The two ends of the main ridge are adorned with ancient and fierce chiwen (mythical roof ornaments). Although damaged, these are the oldest chiwen still in use on ancient buildings in China, making them a temporal symbol of Liao Dynasty chiwen. Architect Liang Sicheng called them "extremely rare and precious." On both sides of the gate path stand over 4-meter-tall clay sculptures of the Heng and Ha generals, created during the Liao Dynasty. Their flowing robes, full muscles, and glaring eyes exude a powerful aura. The Guanyin Pavilion is the oldest wooden multi-story pavilion in China. The plaque under the eaves, inscribed with the four characters "Guanyin Pavilion," is said to have been written by the poet Li Bai, though the characters "Tai Bai" are cramped in one corner and somewhat awkward. The pavilion is 23 meters tall, with two visible stories and three hidden stories. The most stunning feature is the Liao Dynasty clay statue of Guanyin on the central Sumeru pedestal, which, together with the lotus seat, stands 16.08 meters tall. The main Guanyin statue wears a "Five-Buddha Crown," a half-sleeve short jacket with cloud-patterned shoulder cape, and a long skirt, with colors still clearly visible. The crown is topped with ten small Buddha heads, hence called the Eleven-Faced Guanyin. Inside the pavilion, there is also a douba zaojing (eight-bracket caisson ceiling). Due to spatial limitations inside the pavilion, only part of the top can be seen. Given the close height between the Guanyin statue and the pavilion, how was the statue placed inside the pavilion back then? Some experts believe the statue was built first, and then the pavilion was constructed around it, like dressing Guanyin in several layers of outerwear, with beams and woodwork layered around it. It is said that standing in front of the Shanmen Gate, one can see the towering eyes of Guanyin inside the pavilion. Unfortunately, I could not see them, perhaps due to my limited fortune. The Guanyin Pavilion also preserves Yuan Dynasty murals, which were covered with thick white lime during the Cultural Revolution, thus protecting them. Currently, only a portion has been uncovered under limited technical conditions. Dule Temple has withstood over a thousand years of wind, rain, war, and more than thirty major earthquakes, yet it still stands majestically. It is a testament to the wisdom of ancient craftsmen and the protection of the divine. The temple grounds are dappled with light and shadow from ancient trees, with few visitors. The crisp sound of wind chimes echoes in the silent breeze—is this the Buddhist chant from a thousand years ago? Sitting beneath the massive dougong brackets, gazing at the scene before me, listening again to the purchased electronic guide, I sit and observe, cultivating harmony with all things.
