Asuncion- the hottest place to visit in South America right now!

As one of South America’s oldest cities, Asuncion has a charming but compact Old Town - it’s here that I would recommend exploring. Full of striking colonial architecture, this area is a hidden gem within South America that I doubt is on the radar of many travellers. Many of the sites to be found within Old Town are located on the Main Street within Calle Palma. Outside many of the historic and key buildings of interest, you can find a tourist information board which offers useful information about the building in question. Paraguay is also well known for its handicrafts. The workmanship that has gone into creating many of these products is something to behold and no doubt, like me, you’ll be wanting to bring back some souvenirs home with you. So make sure you stop by many of the markets or artisan shops along the way - and don’t forget to haggle! One of the most tumultuous times of Paraguay’s history was the war against the triple alliance of Brazil-Argentina and Uruguay in the 1860’s, which resulted in Paraguay losing about 40% of its territorial claims. These canons were used by the Paraguayan army in that war. So, as mentioned earlier, Paraguay is a landlocked country. But whilst there’s no seashore here, there are a lot of cool port and riverside areas. Asuncion is no different with the Paraguay River running through it. This area around the river is Costanera de Asunción. It’s also along here that you can check out some of Paraguay’s native wildlife, which they’ve got in abundance. Now, heading back into Asunción’s old town, we took a look at this grand pink building that is Palacio López. This is arguably the prettiest building in Asuncion. Apparently, in the early days of independence, you could have been shot just for looking at the outside of this impressive building! Thankfully, things are a lot different today, and it’s nice to be able to take in the views of the president’s workplace. After admiring some of Asunción’s cool street art scene, we made our way back to the Costanera de Asuncion. There was a fire further along the river banks, but that didn’t stop this place becoming a hive of activity in the evening time - especially considering our visit was in the height of their winter. It’s a great place to unwind and watch the world go by. Heading back into the old town at night, the streets around Calle Palma have a cool, laidback vibe. I’d say Asuncion is a great place to spend a few chilled out days whilst travelling across South America, especially to escape the hustle and bustle of other cities but whilst getting your culture fix. #paraguay #asuncion #southamerica #holiday #vacation
