Nanhaizi Park in Beijing | A Modern Ecological Wonder of a Royal Wetland

Nanhaizi Park is a large suburban park in Beijing and the largest wetland park in the city, covering an area of 11.65 square kilometers, equivalent to the size of four Summer Palaces. The park is located on the south side of the South Fifth Ring Road in the northeast of Daxing District, between Daxing New Town and Yizhuang New Town, and is the first major ecological project implemented under Beijing's South Action Plan. The first phase of Nanhaizi Park was completed and opened to the public in 2010, and the second phase officially opened on July 28, 2019. The park is open to the public for free, with opening hours from 7:00 to 20:00 every day. Historically, Nanhaizi was the largest wetland in Beijing and served as a royal hunting ground for the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, as well as a royal garden for the Ming and Qing dynasties. 'The Autumn Wind of the Southern Garden' was listed as one of the 'Ten Scenes of Yanjing' as early as the Ming Dynasty. The construction of the park focuses on the creation of functional areas such as wetland landscapes, royal culture, milu deer protection, and ecological recreation. The Beijing Milu Park, located within Nanhaizi Park, is the core area of the park and the site of extinction and reintroduction for the rare species of milu deer, serving functions in milu deer research and biodiversity conservation. Since July 2006, the Milu Park has become one of the first batch of outdoor ecological museums to be opened to the public for free in the capital. The main attractions in the park include the Deer Watching Platform, the Missionary Square, the Zhongshan Memorial Forest, and more. In addition, the park includes multiple scenic areas and spots such as the Vermilion Bird Welcome, the Kun Stone and Twin Willows, the Bird Language Terrace, the Maple Forest Drunken Love, the Valley Spring Dawn, etc., forming a rich natural and cultural landscape.
