Honouring the “Queen of the Alai.”

Wandering through Oak Park in Bishkek, I was enveloped by the serene canopy of ancient oak trees, their leaves whispering stories of the city’s past. The park’s tranquil paths led me to the striking monument of Kurmanjan Datka, affectionately known as the “Queen of the Alai.” Erected in 2004, this bronze and granite statue honors a formidable 19th-century Kyrgyz stateswoman and military leader who played a pivotal role in the region’s history. The statue stands gracefully beneath an elegant arch of columns, exuding a sense of reverence and strength.
