The precious red marble church in the surrounding area

Andalusia Tour ~ Cordoba The precious red veined marble from the Cabra Mountains reaches its architectural and sculptural splendour in this great Baroque cathedral. The red (and black) marble of Cabra is used extensively in this magnificent church, which was rebuilt between the 17th and 18th centuries on the site of a former mosque. For example, it was used to support the 44 columns of the barrel vaults of the five naves. This great altarpiece is the work of Melchor de Aguirre (1674), following a design by the architect and altarpiece maker José Granados de la Barrera, who was actually a native of Cabra. Granados was involved in the design of the Granada Cathedral. He also designed the main nave, transepts, vaults, and towers, which were rebuilt in bare brick.
