It was originally called Wat Hong and was built in the late Ayutthaya period during the reign of King Narai the Great. It is where Luang Pho Phuttha Sothon, the city’s sacred Buddha image, is enshrined. It is a stucco Buddha image in the meditation posture, 1.65 meters wide and 1.98 meters high, crafted by Lan Xang craftsmen. Luang Pho Sothon is famous for its sacredness and people usually pray for blessings in business, finances, and luck. Many people have faith and flock to pay homage throughout the year. However, there are 2 things that believers must know not to ask for: 1. Do not ask for blessings regarding the military draft. It is believed that Luang Pho Sothon likes people to serve as soldiers to protect the country. 2. Do not ask for children. It is believed that Luang Pho Sothon will send dead soldiers back to be born, which may cause the children to be disabled or lack all 32 body parts.
