For thousands of years, small marine organisms and sand alternately layered and buried under the sea, producing hard limestone and soft sandstone deposits that formed multi-layered areas. Seismic activity raised the sea floor and eventually dried up. Years of wind and rain eroded the soft sandstone. Finally, hundreds of strata were formed vertically along the cliff gullies.
