Temple of Literature - Hanoi

The Temple of Literature in Hanoi is a typical Chinese-style architectural complex, consisting of five courtyards. Outside the main gate of the Temple of Literature stands a 'dismounting stele', indicating that even the highest-ranking individuals should dismount and walk inside. The words 'Temple of Literature Gate' are prominently and solemnly displayed above the center of the main gate. On both the east and west sides of the stele courtyard, 82 doctoral steles are neatly arranged, with 41 on each side. Each stele is carried by a vividly carved stone turtle, with the names of the scholars who passed the imperial examinations over the years inscribed on them. Therefore, there is a common saying in Vietnam to encourage diligence in study: 'The golden list on stone steles will last forever.' Hanging high in the center of the Great Hall is a Chinese plaque with the four characters 'Teacher of All Ages', indicating that it was 'written by Emperor Kangxi'. Inside the main hall, there is an altar for Confucius, and on both sides, sages from China and Vietnam are honored.
