To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of the legendary superstar Leslie Cheung, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum will host the "Continue to Love - Leslie Cheung Memorial Exhibition" starting from March 29. The exhibition is guest curated by three of Leslie Cheung's close friends - Suk-Fun Chan, William Chang and Wing Shya. Through the exhibition of his classic stage costumes, photos, records and film and television works, music and film awards and personal collections, the exhibition reviews his outstanding achievements in music, film and television and his influence on popular culture. The organizer would like to express special thanks to Tong Hok Tak for sharing Leslie Cheung’s personal collection. The Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Mr Liu Mingguang, said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on March 28 that the first "Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival" will be launched in April this year, focusing on introducing representative figures of Hong Kong pop culture. The "Continue to Love Leslie Cheung Memorial Exhibition" is a prelude event to the first "Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival" and is of special significance. Leslie Cheung is a classic of Hong Kong pop culture, with fans all over the world. The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is honoured to collaborate with three of Leslie Cheung’s close friends to hold a commemorative exhibition on the 20th anniversary of his death, reviewing Leslie Cheung’s achievements in acting with the public. Other guests attending the ceremony included Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee Mr. So Cheung-tak, Ms. Chan Suk-fen, Mr. Chang Suk-ping and Mr. Wing-hong Shya, as well as Director of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum Mr. Lam Kwok-fai. Leslie Cheung’s good friends, Chan Yau Kin, Mok Ho Man Yee and Lian Yim Fai, also attended the event to share their experiences. Leslie Cheung (1956-2003) made his debut in a singing competition in 1977 and became one of the local timeless superstars with his extraordinary talent and unique style. His musical style is varied and he has successfully performed many film roles. Over the years, he has created countless classic songs, films and television works, which have witnessed the flourishing development of Hong Kong's music and film scenes in the 1980s and 1990s. Leslie Cheung's artistic achievements transcend time, space, region and boundaries, and have a profound impact on local popular culture. The precious exhibits include the clothes that Leslie Cheung wore in different concerts, such as the red cape, rhinestone suit and red high heels in the "Beyond 97" concert; the white feather costume and blue beaded jeans worn in the "Passion Concert"; and the shell culottes designed for him by a famous French designer. In addition to concert costumes, the exhibition also displays some of Leslie Cheung's records and music, film and television awards, including the vinyl record of "Love for You" (white version), the vinyl record of "Stand Up" (purple version), the trophy for Best Film Song "Chasing" at the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards, and the trophy for the Album Award "Untitled" awarded by the four major music awards. Also on display were Leslie Cheung's photo album "Celebration" and concert photos taken by Wing Shya. In conjunction with this exhibition, there will also be a special display in the museum lobby to share with the public a selection of Leslie Cheung’s vinyl and laser records from the collection of the Hong Kong Central Library. The exhibition will run until mid-April. The exhibition is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, planned by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and supported by the "Brother" Fan Club. It will be held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin from March 29 to October 9. It is one of the prelude programmes of the "Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2023".
