Quality @ Fat Tat Char Siu

Hong Kong-style roasted meats are undoubtedly a must-have delicacy for Hong Kongers! I've loved them since I was young, especially char siu, which is my ultimate comfort food. This time, I visited a well-known roasted meat specialty restaurant in Wan Chai to see if it could truly win my heart. Fat Tat Char Siu, located in Wan Chai, has quite a reputation! It's opened by the owner of Feng Shan Private Kitchen in the same area, and I've heard it's extremely popular. So, my dad and I decided to have dinner there at around 6 PM, and luckily, we snagged the last two seats without having to queue. The open kitchen is fully visible, showcasing hanging roasted goose, char siu, and soy sauce chicken—three types of roasted meats we love. Naturally, we decided to try them all. The small shop was packed, and sharing tables is just common sense here! We ordered two bowls of roasted meat rice, which also came with a bowl of traditional soup. That day, we got white gourd soup, which was thick and flavorful, clearly made with quality ingredients. My dad chose his favorite roasted goose leg rice for $100, which is surprisingly reasonable for a goose leg! The roasted goose leg was crispy on the outside, fragrant, and not overly fatty. The seasoning wasn't overpowering, allowing the natural flavor of the goose to shine through, which I appreciated. I opted for my favorite unbeatable combo: char siu and Maotai soy sauce chicken rice for $80! We both requested extra rice, but the portion still wasn't very large. After just a few spoonfuls, the rice was gone, so those with bigger appetites might find it insufficient. First, I tried the char siu, which had a nice caramelized edge and a balanced mix of lean and fatty meat. The texture was distinct and the flavor was perfectly sweet and savory. If I had to nitpick, it was slightly sticky to the teeth, but otherwise, the char siu was genuinely good. The Maotai soy sauce chicken was absolutely the MVP! The chicken skin was smooth and not greasy, infused with the rich aroma of Maotai and soy sauce. The meat was tender and flavorful, showcasing an exceptional level of quality. Fat Tat Char Siu's prices aren't cheap, but the quality makes it reasonable. The staff were very diligent in clearing tables, though it did make me feel a bit pressured. I believe takeaway might offer a more relaxed dining experience.
