Must-visit! Hong Kong Heritage Museum, a hidden historical treasure in the park.

In the densely populated city of Hong Kong, it's surprising to find so many museums. Among them is the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, located in Kowloon Park. Originally a military barracks, it was later transformed into an antiquities and monuments exhibition hall. The museum showcases artifacts unearthed locally in Hong Kong. While its history may not be as extensive as museums in mainland China, it offers valuable insights into Hong Kong's ancient architecture, culture, and historical evolution. One of the highlights is the uniquely designed exhibition halls. Each drawer is labeled with a specific location in Hong Kong, containing artifacts excavated from that area. Visitors can open drawers of places they are interested in, which is particularly engaging for children. For instance, there are porcelain pieces unearthed near Disneyland, displayed across the entire floor of the exhibition hall, enhanced by lighting effects for a stunning visual impact. Another exhibit features the iconic gas lamps from Central, which were damaged during Typhoon Mangkhut. A dedicated restoration team was formed, and the lamps were sent to a factory in the UK for repairs, taking several months to complete. What surprised me the most is that the museum offers free guided tours. However, these are conducted in Cantonese, scheduled at specific times, and have limited slots available on a first-come, first-served basis. The tour lasts about an hour, and the guides provide excellent explanations that even children find captivating!
