2025 Hong Kong Weekend Visit: Tsz Shan Monastery Buddhist Art Museum

The Tsz Shan Monastery Buddhist Art Museum might be one of Hong Kong's hardest-to-enter free museums. First, you need to book tickets for Tsz Shan Monastery, with a daily limit of 400 visitors. The museum is located at the base of the Guanyin statue and is open from 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–17:00. Though not very large, the museum primarily features exquisite statues of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and arhats from China, India, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, spanning from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Republican era. The museum also displays Tang Dynasty handwritten Buddhist scriptures and sutra pillars, including a Buddha image painted on a bodhi leaf (Figure 5), which is a rare sight. Before each visit, visitors must watch a four-minute introductory video; recording is not allowed. Museum volunteers offer free guided tours in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.
