Ap Lei Chau Hung Shing Traditional Culture Festival

Ap Lei Chau is an island located opposite Aberdeen in the southern district of Hong Kong Island. The sea between Ap Lei Chau and Aberdeen is the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter. The “脷” in Ap Lei Chau means tongue in Cantonese. Because the pronunciation of tongue is similar to that of erosion, which means "losing money", the pronunciation of "li" in "yibenwanli" is used. In Cantonese, many organs are derived from the lunar part, so they are called “脷”. Ap Lei Chau is named after its long and narrow shape which resembles a duck's tongue. Hongsheng was the title of the South China Sea God during the Song Dynasty. The most famous one was the "Hongsheng King" conferred by Emperor Renzong of Song. The present-day Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau were developed from fishing villages. Fishermen built temples for the South China Sea God in order to pray for peace at home, good weather, and a good harvest. The Hung Shing Traditional Culture Festival has a history of over a hundred years and is a celebration event held in Ap Lei Chau during the birthday of Hung Shing King. This year's event will last from February 19 to March 6. It will be held near the Hung Shing Temple in Ap Lei Chau.
