Mottisfont – Where Roses and History Bloom Together

Mottisfont Abbey is where centuries of history and garden beauty come together. Originally founded in 1201 as an Augustinian priory, Mottisfont has evolved over time into a stunning country house surrounded by riverside walks, woodlands, and one of the most beautiful rose gardens in the UK. The highlight for me? The walled rose garden. Designed by legendary horticulturist Graham Stuart Thomas, this garden holds the National Collection of pre-1900 shrub roses. With over 500 varieties, these roses bloom in a once-a-year spectacle from late May to June, filling the air with layers of warm, nostalgic fragrance. It’s a truly timeless moment that draws garden lovers from around the world. Beyond the flowers, Mottisfont’s interior is a blend of heritage and creativity. In the 20th century, the house was transformed by art patron Maud Russell, who invited leading artists of the day — including Rex Whistler and Boris Anrep — to decorate and shape the space. It feels more like a lived-in home than a formal museum, and that’s part of its magic. Best time to visit: Late May through June for peak rose season. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during this time offer extended evening hours (open till 8 PM), which is ideal for quieter strolls and golden-hour photography. Location: Mottisfont Lane, near Romsey, Hampshire SO51 0LP, England Admission: Free for National Trust members; standard ticket prices for non-members. Tip: Don’t miss the giant London plane tree on the riverside lawn — it’s one of the largest in Britain. And grab a slice of cake from the Stable Café — it’s the perfect garden treat! #mottisfont #nationaltrust #rosegarden #historicengland #hampshireheritage #grahamstuartthomas #triprecommended #gardenlovers #culturalescape
