Nanjing's Time-lapsed Alley, Laomendong Travelogue

There are places in Nanjing, China that look modern on the outside but still have a deep sense of time inside. One of them is Laomendong (老门东). As the name suggests, this place, which means “the area east of the old South Gate,” was once one of the most bustling areas within the city walls. I got off near Fuzimiao (夫子庙) Station on Nanjing’s subway line 3. It was just a short walk from there to the entrance of Laomendong. Located next to the city walls, the noise and bustle of the city disappears, and at some point, quiet alleys and old-fashioned tiled roofs begin to appear. As I passed the entrance, I saw old-fashioned buildings lined up on both sides, and walking on the stone floors of the old alleys felt like I was in a movie set. Laomendong is more than just a tourist attraction. Originally, this was an area where craftsmen and merchants lived since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and its atmosphere is still well preserved today. On one side of the street, an old man sits with a brush demonstrating traditional calligraphy, while on the other side, you can catch a glimpse of the hands of craftsmen making handicrafts. The vermilion lights come on, and the buildings glow softly in the darkness, creating a sense of tranquility.
