Dear family! As a local, I must share some essential tips to avoid pitfalls in Hulunbuir! Our Inner Mongolia is vast and rich in resources, and Hulunbuir is as beautiful as a fairy tale, but you must avoid these traps! 1️⃣ Transportation Buy a direct flight to Hailar, don’t mistakenly buy one to Hohhot. The two places are very far apart, and transfers are a hassle. 2️⃣ Clothing The grassland has strong UV rays and lots of mosquitoes! Bring a windbreaker and a thick jacket because the temperature difference between morning and night is big—hot in the morning and cold at night. Don’t wear short skirts; mosquitoes will bite your legs all over. Wear high-top Martin boots + long pants, and a brimmed hat to protect yourself from mosquitoes. 3️⃣ Sunscreen and Hydration The grassland is so dry it can cause nosebleeds. Lip balm, moisturizing masks, body lotion, and hand cream are all essential. The UV rays are strong; you can get sunburned in half an hour. You’ll need to use half a bottle of sunscreen a day, so remember to reapply frequently. 4️⃣ Food Don’t go to the popular restaurants; the authentic delicious food is in small shops in residential alleys. Hand-pulled mutton and grilled lamb chops are super fragrant, and the pot tea with rye bread is amazing. Don’t casually enter roadside “free milk tea” stands; many are traps, so always ask the price first. Don’t miss authentic local foods: grilled skewers, mutton soup, hand-pulled mutton, dairy products, pot tea, Buryat buns, fried rice, stewed noodles, beef jerky, stuffed tripe, shaomai, big rye bread... every bite is full of grassland flavor! 5️⃣ Sightseeing If it’s your first time in Hulunbuir, I recommend joining a local tour or hiring a car with a driver. First, having someone guide you saves unnecessary detours; second, it’s safer and more convenient; third, it’s less tiring, and you won’t be too exhausted to drive after playing. When going to the Morigele River, don’t fully trust GPS navigation; ask local herders to avoid unnecessary detours and find the best viewing spots. 6️⃣ Photography No need to pay to enter the birch forest scenic area; there are large patches of birch forests along the road that are free and beautiful. Don’t crowd the popular photo spots; go deeper into the grassland, and every shot will be stunning. Sunrise is at 5-6 AM, sunset at 8-9 PM, the light is beautiful—don’t miss it. 7️⃣ Must-Have Items Bring stomach medicine and motion sickness pills; beef and mutton are delicious but can cause indigestion, and long drives can cause motion sickness. Lip balm, moisturizing masks, and sunscreen are very important; the grassland’s UV rays and dryness should not be underestimated. Signal is poor on the grassland, so make sure to inform your family of your itinerary before departure.
