Chuansha, the largest town in Pudong, Shanghai

Chuansha Ancient Town has always been one of the central towns in the Pudong area of Shanghai, and like many other towns in Pudong, it prospered because of salt. In the early Ming Dynasty, this area was still a coastal beach. After many years of development, it gradually became a large town in Pudong with a congregation of salt merchants and a forest of masts. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, Chuansha Ancient Town was referred to as a 'giant town by the sea'. The current Chuansha town coexists with both the ancient and the modern, where the old and the young intersect, retaining the elegance of the past while displaying a new look of today, still standing as a giant town by the sea. Chuansha Ancient Town has rare cultural relics in the Shanghai area such as the old city wall, academy, 'Neishi Mansion', Catholic church, and other district-level cultural heritage sites, as well as old street areas like Nan Market Street, Zhong Market Street, and East Gate Street. Along these streets, buildings from the Republic of China period are still preserved in their original state, reflecting the historical style of the largest town in Pudong.
