Black Mountain Headland, Jersey

During the five years that the British Crown dependency Jersey was occupied by Germany during World War II, the entire island was built into an unsinkable aircraft carrier. The French Atlantic coast became Germany's outpost. In order to prevent the Allies from attacking France from the sea in the future, the Germans began to build defensive facilities with reinforced concrete on the Black Mountain Cape on the island of Jersey in the English Channel as early as 1941. These included a large command bunker equipped with four 150mm SK L/45 naval guns. Later, before the Allied landing in Normandy, Jersey was first occupied to clear the obstacles for a successful landing. This defensive position was the only German naval coastal battery on the island and was part of Hitler's infamous Atlantic Wall. It is one of the few relatively unspoilt areas on Jersey's south coast.
