Shangtang River is located outside the Changmen Gate of the ancient city of Suzhou. It starts from Changmen, one of the most prosperous and elegant places in the world, in the east and ends at Fengqiao, an important port for shipping on the Grand Canal, in the west, and is about 3,600 meters long. It was dug in the Spring and Autumn Period and connected with the Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty. The scenery on both sides of Shangtang River is pleasant, especially in the colorful autumn. Along the river, there are the world cultural heritage Liuyuan Garden, one of the four major Arhat Halls in China, Xiyuan Temple, the thousand-year-old famous temple Hanshan Temple, as well as Fengqiao Scenic Area, Tieling Pass, etc. There are also many ancient bridges on Shangtang River, such as Shangjin Bridge and Xiajin Bridge, as well as the former site of "Suzhou Prefecture Official Agricultural School" and Anhui Guild Hall and other relics. On a sunny winter day, strolling along the Shangtang River is also a travel experience. You can also take a boat from Changmen directly to Jiangfengqiao Wharf to Hanshan Temple.
