AUSTYN MARTINEZ

Wenzhou Huagai Mountain Scenic Area

Wenzhou City was first built in the first year of Tai Ning during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (323), starting from Jigu Mountain in the east, reaching Songtai Mountain in the west, connecting to Guogong Mountain in the north, joining Haitan Mountain in the east, and passing through Huagai Mountain in the south. It ends at Jigu Mountain with a total length of more than 9,300 meters. According to the 'Yongjia County Annals' from the Guangxu period, the earliest city walls of Wenzhou were built with bricks and stones. On the north side, they were constructed along the Ou River, and when encountering small mountains like Huagai Mountain, the walls were built following the terrain, winding and majestic. With multiple reconstructions throughout history, the city wall evolved into a structure with rammed earth in the middle and bricks on both sides. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Wenzhou city wall was still well preserved, with a height of 3 zhang and 5 chi (only 1 chi shorter than Hangzhou's), a width of 1 zhang and 2 chi, and a total circumference of 2,777 zhang and 8 chi (18.5 li). The demolition of the city wall began in 1927, and by 1945 it was largely destroyed. Today, only the remains of the ancient city wall on the south side of Huagai Mountain are preserved.
