Known as the "first manor in China," Zhuang Manor is where the first provincial government under the leadership of the Communist Party of China was established. During the Hongwu era of the Ming dynasty, a couple surnamed Zhuang carried their belongings from Donghai, Jiangsu, traveling north until they finally settled in a corner of Juzhou, southern Shandong. When they arrived, they had no roof over their heads and no farmland, surviving by renting land from others. Life was extremely difficult. The true rise of the Zhuang family began with the fifth generation, Zhuang Qian. In the 47th year of the Wanli reign, Zhuang Qian passed the imperial examination and ranked alongside the famous official Yuan Chonghuan, marking the start of the Zhuang family’s success in the civil service. Over the next 400 years, the Zhuang family produced many scholars and officials: 8 jinshi degree holders, 22 juren degree holders, and more than 300 students of various ranks. Many family members served in government positions. At its peak, the Zhuang estate covered 46,000 square meters, with over 300 ancestral halls and more than 500,000 mu of family land. A local saying went, “People travel 100 miles without staying at another family’s inn; horses travel 1,000 miles without eating grass from another clan.” However, the most legendary chapter of Zhuang Manor is not its illustrious family history but its role during the War of Resistance Against Japan. When the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army arrived in Junan, the Zhuang family made a decision that changed the course of history—they voluntarily offered part of their manor to serve as the headquarters for the 115th Division, where leaders such as Liu Shaoqi, Chen Guang, and Luo Ronghuan strategized. On August 13, 1945, the first provincial government under the leadership of the Communist Party of China—the Shandong provincial government—was officially established in the “Siyu Hall” of Zhuang Manor. Since then, Junan has been called the “Little Yan’an of Shandong.” Today, this remarkable history is preserved within the “Former Site of the Shandong Provincial Government and the 115th Division Headquarters of the Eighth Route Army” scenic area. It is now a national 4A-level tourist attraction and a classic red tourism site, known as the “Red Holy Land of Yimeng and the first manor in China.” Visiting the site, you can see precious historical relics such as the former Shandong provincial government building and the 115th Division headquarters. From the station, a taxi to Liandao takes about 40 minutes, to Huaguo Mountain about 25 minutes. You can also arrive at Lianyungang East Station (closer to Liandao, near Haiyifang Park). · Driving highly recommended: attractions are along Gangcheng Avenue and Haitang Road. Huaguo Mountain, Yuwan, Liandao, and Haishang Yuntai Mountain are in different directions. 📅 May 20-22 (Wednesday–Friday), off-peak travel experience was great~ 🚄 High-speed train about 3 hours, kids can sit through it 🏠 Stayed near Xugou, right next to Jiaruibao Plaza, two nights for 600+ Day 1 Took the high-speed train from Suzhou to Lianyungang Station, dropped off luggage first, then took a taxi to "Zai Hai Yi Fang Park" for beachcombing 🌊 The kids collected lots of shells and were excited to see the sea In the evening, rented shared electric bikes to Qixia Road Pedestrian Street, with various snack stalls and specialty foods Dinner at Jinhai Yugang Seafood Restaurant (Zai Hai Yi Fang branch) 🦞 Ordered: octopus mixed noodles, seafood platter, large prawns. Seafood was freshly selected and caught, tasted great, no disappointments. Day 2 In the morning, went to Haishang Yuntai Mountain 🌿 Recommended to enter from the main gate and take the sightseeing bus up the mountain to save energy. At the top, the "Sea and Sky Panorama" viewing platform offers a bird’s-eye view of the port and Lian Island, with a wide open view. The air in the mountains is fresh, and the kids had a great time. Then took a taxi to Lian Island, Dasha Bay has fine soft sand, continued collecting shells and catching little crabs 🦀🐚 Day 3 Return day had heavy fog, so switched to indoor activities. Went to Donghai Ji Gaolu Mengmeng Amusement Park, indoor area of 6000 sqm, very few people, over 25 play facilities available. Played for more than two hours. Last meal was Donghai fried chicken, the chicken was tender and the service was good. Took a short nap in the afternoon, then took the 5 PM high-speed train back to Suzhou. ✅ Tips 1️⃣ Check the weather in advance, but coastal weather is really unpredictable. 2️⃣ For kids, it’s better to bring waterproof clothing, which is more convenient than rain boots; beachcombing tools are sold in stores 🪣
