Our group of seven girls spent a wonderful day with Youssef and were absolutely thrilled. We enjoyed a quad biking session and a camel ride. He took us to a resort in the Agafay desert, which featured a pool, bar, and restaurant. We dined on Moroccan specialties at the restaurant and were treated to an incredible fire show. Find a straw-mat cafe, order a mint tea, and watch the Mediterranean sunset—every photo you take will look like a wallpaper. · Planning: We recommend 0.5 to 1 day. Take the TGM train from Tunis to Sidi Bou Said station for less than 1 Dinar—it's very convenient. The town is small but worth exploring slowly. In the evening, watch the panoramic view of the Gulf of Tunis from the headland; it's breathtaking. 3. Carthage – The fading glory of a 3,000-year-old empire · Highlights: A powerful city-state founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC, it was once the hegemon of the Mediterranean. Today, only ruins remain to tell the tragic epic of the Punic Wars. The Antonine Baths are among the largest in the Roman Empire; the massive stone columns and underground heating system are well-preserved, and the view overlooking the Mediterranean is unbeatable. · Planning: We recommend 0.5 day. The ruins are spread across multiple areas, so you'll need at least 3–4 hours to explore them properly. You can also take the TGM line from Tunis and get off at the Carthage station, which has multiple stops throughout the ruins area. 4. El Jem Amphitheatre – One of the world's top 3 amphitheaters · Highlights: It is second only to the Colosseum in Rome in terms of preservation! Standing at the top of the spectator stands, you can almost hear the cheers and roars from 2,000 years ago. It's more complete than the one in Rome, less crowded, and perfect for photos. · Planning: We recommend 0.5 day. You can charter a car or take a train from Tunis or Sousse, and a round trip in 1 day is easy. 5. Kairouan – The fourth holiest city in Islam · Highlights: The oldest Islamic holy city in Tunisia. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the oldest mosques in North Africa, with solemn and majestic architecture. Non-Muslims can visit the outer courtyard. The carpet souks in the old town are also very distinctive. · Planning: We recommend 0.5 to 1 day. It's a must-visit stop on the southern loop and is usually visited in conjunction with El Jem. 6. Sousse – A thousand-year-old Mediterranean port · Highlights: · Sousse Medina and Ribat: Climb to the roof of the Ribat for a panoramic view of the old town and the Mediterranean. · Sousse Archaeological Museum: Located inside the Kasbah, it houses exquisite Roman mosaics. · Port El Kantaoui: An artificial marina surrounded by white walls, blue doors, and palm trees—perfect for a leisurely lunch at a seaside restaurant. · Planning: We recommend 1 day. Semolina served with lamb and vegetables. The addition of harissa sauce gives it a refreshing kick that you won't forget. · Brik: A North African spring roll with a crispy outer layer and a filling of egg, tuna, or minced meat. A must-try street food. · Harissa: A standard accompaniment to every meal. It's quite spicy, and if you love spicy food, you'll absolutely fall in love with it. · Mint tea: Pine nut mint tea is a classic pairing in the blue and white town. It's incredibly sweet but addictive. · Fresh seafood: Seaside restaurants in Sousse and Tunis serve grilled fish with lemon—simple but delicious. 📝 Travel tips · Best season: March–May and September–November. The weather is mild and pleasant, sunny but not hot, and the sea is calm and suitable for swimming. Be sure to avoid the extreme heat in desert areas from June to August. · Visa and currency: Tunisia is visa-free for Chinese citizens (for stays of up to 90 days). The currency is the Tunisian Dinar; 1 US dollar is approximately 3 Dinars. Cash is king; most places do not accept credit cards, so exchange cash in advance. · Transportation: When taking a taxi in the city, remember to agree on the price with the driver before getting in. For intercity travel, you can take shared minibuses or trains. The TGM line from Tunis to the blue and white town and Carthage is very convenient. · Clothing: Remember to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and religious sites; casual wear is fine for daily life. If you're taking a two-day trip to the Sahara in Tunisia, I highly recommend doing more than just the camel ride. In the Douz region, known as the gateway to the Sahara, we were offered the chance to hit the sands on quad bikes. And let me tell you, it's a completely different vibe 😄 You start off slow to get the hang of it, but once you hit the dunes, the speed kicks in, sand starts flying, and you just want to go faster and faster. We went out late in the afternoon as the sun was setting, making the desert look absolutely stunning. With the soft light and golden sand, there's nothing but dunes and tracks as far as the eye can see. This was an extra activity on our tour, so there was an additional fee. But it was worth every penny. Camels are for the atmosphere. Quad bikes are for pure thrill and adrenaline. 📍 Douz, Tunisia If you're heading to the Sahara, don't pass this up—especially if you're looking for an adventure, not just a view.

This was one of the stops on our two-day tour of southern Tunisia. Before the ride, we were dressed in long robes and had our heads wrapped in scarves—instantly, it felt like we weren't just tourists, but Berbers😁 (the local people; I have a separate post about them). Then they sat us on camels and led us through the dunes. The most memorable part is the moment the camel stands up. First, it lifts its back end, then the front, and you literally get tossed back and forth. For those first few seconds, the main thing is just to hold on tight! 😂 The ride itself is peaceful. The camels walk in single file, surrounded by sand, palm trees, long shadows, and a seemingly endless horizon. I even managed to pet a few of their faces while passing by. In terms of timing, it’s not a massive desert expedition, but rather a short ride for the experience and the photos. But it's definitely worth trying at least once. It’s especially beautiful towards evening when the sun isn't so harsh and long shadows from the camels stretch across the sand. Stepping into Tozeur feels like emerging into a breathtaking desert mirage where an ocean of green date palms meets the endless golden dunes of the Sahara. Tucked away in southwestern Tunisia near the great salt flats of Chott el Djerid, this historic oasis town is world-famous for its distinctive yellow-and-brown brick architecture featuring striking geometric patterns, sprawling palm groves, and ancient desert traditions. Wandering through the cool, shaded alleys of the old medina as the warm desert sun casts intricate shadows across the brickwork was an utterly magical and timeless Saharan journey. 🐪☀️ . 📅 What I experienced · Exploring the Palm Oasis (La Palmeraie): Venturing into the massive, sprawling grove of hundreds of thousands of date palms fed by ancient artesian springs, walking beneath the lush canopy where sweet Deglet Nour dates grow. · The Medina of Ouled El Hadef: Wandering through the labyrinth of the 14th-century old quarter, admiring the unique raised brick facades designed to keep the desert heat at bay. · Discovering Chott el Djerid: Taking a journey out onto the vast, blindingly white expanse of the salt flats, where the shimmering horizon creates surreal mirages under the desert sky. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a traditional oasis hotel built using local sun-dried bricks, featuring cool interior courtyards and a shaded swimming pool surrounded by towering palm trees. Waking up to the absolute silence of the desert morning and enjoying a fresh mint tea was absolute serenity. 🛏️🍵 . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Tunisian Saharan cuisine is rich, aromatic, and spiced to warm the soul. Algeria is a dream destination for lovers of ancient cities, Roman history, the Mediterranean coast, and the vast Sahara Desert. Given its massive size, if you only have three days, it is best to focus on Algiers and its surroundings. Do not try to rush to the Sahara, as the distances are extremely far. 📅 Travel Itinerary Day 1: Algiers 🇩🇿 Start your journey at the Casbah of Algiers. Wander through the narrow alleys of the old town, explore Ottoman-era houses and historic mosques, and enjoy stunning sea views. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended as the streets are quite complex. The Casbah has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992. In the afternoon, visit the Martyrs’ Memorial and explore the downtown area. Day 2: Tipasa 🏛️🌊 Take a day trip from Algiers to Tipasa, an ancient coastal city on the Mediterranean. It features Phoenician and Roman ruins and is one of Algeria’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spending half a day to a full day here is ideal before returning to Algiers in the evening. Day 3: Jardin d’Essai + The Waterfront 🌴 Spend your morning strolling through Jardin d’Essai du Hamma, a large and historic botanical garden. Afterward, enjoy some local cuisine and take a walk along the waterfront. Spend your final evening soaking in the atmosphere of Algiers at a relaxed pace. 🏨 Recommended Accommodation For a high-end stay located near the botanical gardens, choose the Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden. If you prefer a central location with a more mid-range price, the El Aurassi Hotel is another convenient option. 🍴 Recommended Restaurants To try authentic Algerian food near the old town, Dar Yemma Casbah is highly recommended. Another affordable and popular choice is Restaurant El Walima Alger. Must-try dishes include Couscous, Rechta, Chorba, Mechoui, and Tajine, finished off with a traditional mint tea or coffee. 📌 Travel Tips Explore the Casbah during the day with a guide to navigate safely and gain a deeper understanding of its history. If you truly want to see the Sahara, you should add at least 4–5 days to your trip and use an experienced local tour company. Do not attempt to drive into remote desert areas on your own. Currently, there are travel warnings against going near the borders of Libya, Mali, Niger, and parts of Tunisia and Mauritania. For Thai travelers, a tourist visa must be prepared in advance. According to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, those not exempt must apply at an embassy or consulate before traveling. Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining, and you must have travel insurance. For residents in Thailand, the Algerian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur processes applications for Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Summary: For your first 3 days, focusing on Algiers, the Casbah, and Tipasa is perfect. You will get a great mix of old city charm, Roman ruins, and the Mediterranean. #sunsetplaces Douz is the "gateway to the Sahara," 120 km south of Tozeur (bus 8 TND, louage 10 TND/person, cash dinar). The festival ground is a flat patch 3 km east of town used for the December Saharan festival, but the sunset play is on Chott El Jerid — the salt flat 30 km north, reached by 4WD (200 TND/half-day from Douz, negotiate at the garage, no card). I went in January: 4 PM start, arrived at the chott edge 4:50. Chott El Jerid at dusk is a mirror that isn’t water — it is wet salt crust reflecting a 200 km horizon. At 5:20 PM the crust glows pink from below, the sky above goes tangerine, and the distant haze makes the horizon line disappear. You cannot tell where salt ends and sky begins. The festival ground itself is better pre-sunset for silhouettes of camel men, but the chott is the glow. Rules: no walking on the thin salt without a guide — pockets of brine ankle-deep, boots ruined. Carry 2 L water, wind shell, headlamp for the drive back (no streetlights, 40 km/h max on the salt road). Mistake: paying the 4WD driver for "sunset at the big dune" — Douz has no big dune, that is Erg Chebbi 600 km west; the chott is the Douz sunset. Would you photograph the salt glow from the 4WD roof (higher, windier) or sit on the crust edge 30 cm off the ground for the mirrored frame?

No formal entry gate fee for the Karagöl cirque; Sahara plateau is free roam. I took the 07:00 bus from Artvin, alighted at the Şavşat junction 08:45, hitched the last 18 km with a tea-truck (50 TRY). The mossy hero is the Karagöl lakeshore loop (1.5 km) under Picea orientalis: eastern spruce with Rhytidiadelphus on the fallen logs 3 cm thick, 8°C in June, a semi-collared flycatcher, the lake ink-black at 09:10 before wind broke the mirror. I walked the loop twice, ate a 60 TRY Artvin breakfast (kuymak + bread) from the lakeside pension, the moss on the pension's foundation stones dripping, the Sahara plateau 4 km up rolling into cloud sea. Then hitched to Sahara Yayla — moss on the yayla stone fences 1 cm thick, 2,000 m, summer flowers breaking the green. Mistake: I came on a July Saturday — Karagöl shore packed with picnic tents by 11:00; weekday 09:00 or October. Another: the Artvin bus back stops at 16:00; miss it and you sleep at the pension (400 TRY room). Would you bus 570 TRY from Artvin for the Karagöl mossy spruce-loop + Sahara plateau cloud-sea, or taxi 1,800 TRY and control your own 14:00 return?

I went to the Sahara with my mom and a couple of friends, and it was definitely the best experience of our lives there! Mustapha was an amazing guide—very kind and friendly. He explained everything about the Sahara and took us to meet the Nomad Families, explore the culture in Khamliya, enjoy the music, visit a beautiful lake, and much more. I based in Şavşat (pansiyon 700 TL), took a 4WD share (600 TL/car split) up the switchbacks, and walked the 3 km shore loop in mist—spruce so dense the floor is moss, no wind, trout jumping at 7 a.m. The Sahara plateau above the lake is Yayla country: June–September cattle, September golden fern, October first snow. I paired it with a drive to the Bilgilendirme point over the Karçal range, but the lake itself is the stay. No shop at the water; carry 2 L and a lunch, the Şavşat market is cash-only. Cabins at the park gate run 1,500–2,500 TL/night if you want dawn on the tarn. Mistake: I drove the Şavşat road in November once—ice and a closed gate at 16:00; Şavşat–Karagöl is June–October reliably. Another: I wore a hoodie, the spruce shade at 2,000 m was 9°C in July dawn—fleece in the pack. Would you sleep at the lakeside cabin for the 6 a.m. mist, or day-trip from Şavşat and keep the comforts?

Sahara travel was incredible! From beginning to end, everything was wonderful. Everyone involved in our trip plan was extremely polite, thoughtful, attentive, and professional. The experience made us feel right at home and genuinely welcomed. It was a magical experience. We got to know Moroccan culture. The food was delicious and natural. What stood out the most was the people, with their big hearts.
