The Ella train ride really is that beautiful 💚 The reality is that both the train and Nine Arches Bridget get crowded, and over in a blink, yet somehow it’s still magical. Standing by the open doors, feeling the breeze, watching the bridge appear… one of those moments that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Here’s what you need to know 📌 Save for later:� At the time of our visit, the Kandy–Ella train wasn’t fully operational, so instead of the full route we did a shorter (but still stunning) section. We took a taxi from Ella to Haputale, then caught the train back towards Ella. This is also perfect way to experience the scenery without spending the whole day on the train. Recommended Route: We suggest setting out early in the morning for a 30-minute walk from Ella town to the Nine Arches Bridge. Along the way, you'll pass through local tea estates and small villages, soaking in the authentic countryside atmosphere. You're also likely to cross paths with friendly locals and adorable stray dogs. Itinerary Recommendation: We recommend heading out in the morning or at dusk, starting from the Little Adam's Peak Trailhead (Address: Ella, Sri Lanka). The entire route is mainly walking, and it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to reach the top. The trail is well-paved with a gentle slope. Midway, there are small wooden pavilions and rest areas to recharge your energy, and you're accompanied by unbeatable mountain views every step of the way. Along the trail, you'll pass through dense forests, modern little tea plantations, and various rest pavilions. On a clear day, you can capture breathtaking shots of the rolling mountains in the distance. Must-Visit Photo Spots: 1. Day 1: Colombo → Galle Land in Colombo, grab a tuktuk and head straight to Colombo Fort Railway Station. Quick tip: Ask your driver to pass Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque on the way — it’s one of Colombo’s most eye-catching buildings and perfect for quick photos 📸 Then skip the taxi and take the coastal train to Galle instead. It’s only about two hours, but you’ll get sea views, local life and a much better first taste of Sri Lanka. Arrive in Galle, check in, and spend the evening wandering the beautiful streets of Galle Fort. Day 2: Galle → Jungle Beach → Hiriketiya Start with a tuktuk to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, then head down to Jungle Beach for a refreshing swim. After that, go to Galle Central Bus Stand and catch a bus towards Hiriketiya. You’ll probably need to change buses, but don’t panic — just tell the driver where you’re going and they’ll point you in the right direction. Then settle in for three dreamy nights in Hiriketiya 🏝️ Think: surfing, beach cafés, seafood, scooter rides and slow mornings. Days 3–4: Hiriketiya Beach Days This is your time to relax properly. Some of the best meals are the simplest ones! And yes — pack extra sunscreen. You’ll need it 😅 Day 5: Hiriketiya → Yala Route → Ella Take an early shuttle towards Ella via Yala National Park. This travel day comes with a bonus: you might spot elephants, sloth bears or even a leopard along the way! 🤞 Arrive in Ella and settle into the mountains for two nights. Tip: If you use a good private driver, save their number. Trust me — it can come in very handy later. Day 6: Ella Magic Ella is all about fresh air, mountain views and slow adventure. Visit a tea plantation, chase waterfalls, take a Sri Lankan cooking class, or hike Little Adam’s Peak. Important tip: Once you arrive in Ella, head to the train station and book your ticket for the scenic train towards Nuwara Eliya or Kandy 🚂 This is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic journeys! Day 7: Ella → Tea Country Catch the morning train from Ella, usually around 10:00. This route is famous for a reason — tea plantations, misty hills, bridges, villages and endless green views. If you enjoy hiking, get off near Nuwara Eliya and arrange a taxi to Norwood for a night in tea country. Stay tip: Traveller’s Villa is a great option if you’re planning to hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail. The owner is an avid hiker and can help with drop-off and pick-up. Day 8: Pekoe Trail → Kitulgala → Kandy Start early and hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail before the midday heat kicks in. The hike takes around 4–6 hours depending on your pace, and it’s a great way to see Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist stops. Afterwards, head towards Kandy. Feeling adventurous? Add a whitewater rafting stop in Kitulgala on the way! It only takes about 1.5 hours and turns a transfer day into a proper adventure day 🌊 You’ll arrive in Kandy tired, but very happy! Trains: Trains cross the bridge regularly, including the famous tourist train, the Ella Odyssey. Best Time to Visit: Sunrise or sunset offers the best lighting for photography. It is also highly recommended to visit at 06:48, 13:37, or 15:48 to catch a glimpse of the passing trains. How to Get There: A scenic 20-30 minute walk from the Ella Railway Station, or you can take a tuk-tuk to the nearest access road and hike down the trail.

Not just sitting in a carriage, but hanging onto the handrails and leaning out of the open doors—doors that never close. All this with the majestic Nine Arches Bridge as your backdrop. Feel the wind in your hair and the adrenaline rush as your heart races with excitement and fear. Imagine: the wheels clatter, Ceylon tea plantations flash by below, green jungle hills blur past, and you’re speeding along in the doorway. It’s a true sense of freedom, Sri Lankan style! For 97 years, the train has been traveling over this engineering marvel from the British colonial era—the Nine Arches Bridge. The railway over the mountain tea plantations is often called the "Bridge to the Sky." Originally built to connect cities quickly, it has now become a major tourist attraction. Millions of people dream of taking photos on the bridge, on the tracks, and in the train. The train and the bridge are iconic symbols of Sri Lanka. If you have time, you can reach Ella on your own. But during a two-week vacation, it’s more practical to book a tour. For $25-30, you can ride the famous train over the legendary bridge, see a stunning waterfall, hike up Little Adam’s Peak, and even try your hand at tea picking—all in just one day. For example, from the resorts of Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna, it’s about a 4-hour drive to Ella, where the train departs. If you’re traveling by bus, it’s better to plan an overnight stay in the mountains. Before boarding the train, arrange who will take your photos. On tours, this is usually done by the guide. You’ll need to act quickly and efficiently—there will be many people trying to snap pictures, and someone might get in your shot. The best option is to record a video from the nearest window while you pose. It’s easier to extract the perfect photo from a video. The experience and memories are worth taking such a tour. And on Little Adam’s Peak—a mountain ridge—there’s an amazing attraction: swings. You can rent a dress and… swing high into the sky. The photos are stunning! Unpopular opinion: You don’t need to kill your legs on Ella Rock to get the best view in Sri Lanka. Little Adam’s Peak gives you the same epic panorama for 10% of the effort. Here is why it is my favorite spot in Ella 1. Sunset vs. Sunrise ☀️ · The Rule: Go to Ella Rock for sunrise, but come HERE for Sunset. · Why: The sun drops right behind the mountains, turning the sky pink and purple. It is pure magic. Start walking at 4:30 PM to catch the "Golden Hour". 2. The Secret Ridge (Don't Stop!) 🤫 Most tourists stop at the first Buddha statue, take a selfie, and leave. Big mistake. · The Hack: Keep walking! The path continues along the narrow ridge to a second and third peak. · The Reward: You will be alone (no crowds!) and the view of Ella Gap is even wider. It looks scary but it is safe if you are careful. 3. "Hiking" in a Dress? 👗 Yes! The trail is super easy. · Difficulty: 1/10.
