2026 Esna Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Two-night, three-day cruise in early May, starting from Aswan to Esna aboard a dahabiya. With only 10 tourists on a boat designed for many more, the experience felt very personal. The dahabiya was clean, well-equipped, featuring inviting outdoor areas like pergolas, sun loungers, and low sofas, as well as cabins with small terraces overlooking the Nile. The sail was raised twice—a captivating sight, though the wind required support for navigation. The sightseeing program was well-balanced and never tiring: Kom Ombo with its museum of mummified crocodiles, a morning stroll through ancient sandstone quarries with a historical Egyptian chapel, the temple of Edfu (reached via a charming carriage ride), a farm along the Nile's banks, and finally the temple of Esna with its striking ceiling. Between visits, the gentle cruising offered breathtaking views—palm trees, dunes, wetlands, fields, and animals. Plenty of time to watch the river pass by. The food was excellent throughout, with varied and hearty meals. The crew was friendly, helpful, and professional. Guide Nashat spoke excellent French, had deep knowledge of temple history and Egyptian society, and made the tours engaging through an interactive approach. He was accommodating, attentive, and never rushed. An outstanding experience—highly recommended!

Thank you for an impeccably organized, personalized journey from Cairo to Abu Simbel, including a Dahabiya tour from Esna to Aswan. Accompanied by dedicated, knowledgeable guides and careful, patient drivers, we were able to visit lesser-known sites and gain countless impressions of the country and its people.

Only the Hall of Columns really remains of this temple. The front is covered in scaffolding (as of April 2026) and the scattered broken stones in the rear may be a refuge for temple dogs but did not draw our attention. And yet, Esna is one of my favorite places in Egypt. Just sitting among the massive colorful columns gives a sense of peace. Even when a class of (presumably) elementary school girls came in, the mood was not shattered. And so we spent at least 90 minutes in this single awesome hall. In case you are driving yourself (like we did), the temple is at the end of a dirt road that leads through a small souvenir market. Park on the main road near the river. Here are my absolute top favorites that you must check out if you go: 1. **Karnak Temple (Luxor)** Seriously, the size of this place is insane! Walking through the Great Hypostyle Hall with those massive stone pillars felt so surreal. As a design student, the symmetry and the ancient cravings had me geeking out. #2024Travel Review The Temple of Khnum in Esna is famous for its exquisite carvings and is dedicated to Khnum, the ram-headed god and the god of the source of the Nile. This is a well-preserved temple in Egypt. The pylons, outer walls, courtyards and temples have all maintained their original appearance. The temple was built in 1500 BC during the 18th Dynasty and was completely rebuilt during the Ptolemaic Dynasty. The reliefs inside are colorful😍, and the hieroglyphs are clearly visible, which is not inferior to other famous temples. We visited this temple on our way from Aswan to Luxor, which amazed us💕 and made us feel that the trip was worthwhile. Even the sculptures and murals on the ceiling are very delicate😊. The city of Esna was known as Senat in ancient Egypt and Latopolis during the Greek period. The temple complex was built during the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Roman era. The foundation of the Esna Temple was laid by Thutmose III of the 18th Dynasty, but the temple was completed between 40 and 250 AD. This temple is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Khnum, his consorts Menhit and Nebtu, Khnum's firstborn and heir Heka, and the goddess Neith. Khnum is the ram-headed creator god, while Neith is another creator deity of the ancient Egyptians. Most of the temple has been destroyed, with only a beautiful columned portico remaining. The portico has 24 columns adorned with lotus and palm capitals. The walls are covered with four rows of reliefs depicting scenes of Ptolemaic and Roman kings dressed in pharaonic attire offering sacrifices to Khnum. The portico is small, measuring 37 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and 15 meters in height, and is made of sandstone. It is said that a new zodiac relief was discovered in this hall, and the Egyptian restoration team successfully fully restored and recolored some of the images on the ceiling. The relief images include a complete zodiac, planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars, as well as several stars and constellations that helped the ancient Egyptians calculate time.
