Phaistos was the second most important Minoan city after Knossos. It features an impressive landscape with a panoramic view of the Messara plain and Mount Psiloritis. Like Knossos, Phaistos was built on top of a previously destroyed old palace and built around a central courtyard. Unlike its larger counterpart, the ancient palace of Phaistos had fewer frescoes, as the walls were probably covered in white plaster. Looking at the multi-colored illustrations placed in different parts of the palace, you can imagine what this place was like in ancient times.
