It takes about 2 hours by car from Yanmen Pass High-Speed Rail Station to Princess Temple; 2. There are guided tours for the three temples, allowing you to view the murals while listening to explanations. The tours usually last one to two hours, so it’s impossible to visit all three temples in half a day. Forget about just checking in, taking photos, or a quick visit; 3. None of the three temples have a lunch break, but eating lunch will waste time (I’m talking about myself). It’s recommended to bring your own lunch and snacks. In the off-season, dress warmly as the main halls are cold and damp after staying for a while; a cold light source flashlight (essential) is a must. At Princess Temple, due to sunlight, the cultural relics protector only kept one door open.

Setting off early from the North Gate of Mount Wutai, we crossed mountains and ridges past the East Tai Archway to reach this somewhat niche yet very mysterious temple. Our sole purpose was to seek a century-old mummified Bodhisattva. After a two-hour journey, we arrived at this gift deeply hidden by nature, embraced by surrounding mountains where you can clearly hear the wind; birdsong; footsteps; even breathing. This place is a deliberate blank left by the noisy world. The temple is at the foot of the mountain, and there is a Buddhist pagoda uphill accessible by stairs. The colorful wildflowers covering the hillsides look especially charming against the green grass and blue sky. This is Qingfeng Temple in Fanshi County, outside Mount Wutai. The mummified Bodhisattva in the temple is Master Qingde, who has clear historical records within the Mount Wutai Buddhist cultural circle. He is one of the earliest and best-preserved mummified Bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism. The pagoda on the mountain is likely the tomb mound of Master Qingde when he passed away. If the mummified body inside the hall represents the spirit’s eternity, then the pagoda is a memorial to the mortal world. When I met the master, I explained my purpose, and he patiently took me to pay respects. At this moment, butterflies flutter among the flowers in the courtyard. This pure land we have traveled so far to find may well be a paradise the butterflies are blissfully unaware of.
