After leaving the Princess Temple, head east along the national highway, then turn into Xiyankou Village. Sansheng Temple is located north of the village and is part of the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Its founding date is unknown. The temple faces south and from south to north consists of the mountain gate, Ksitigarbha Hall, and the Mahavira Hall, with bell and drum towers and side halls on both sides. The Mahavira Hall is a Jin Dynasty relic, the Ksitigarbha Hall is from the Ming Dynasty, and the rest were built during the Qing Dynasty. The mountain gate is tightly closed, with bell and drum towers on both sides, and a small door nearby for entry. The Ksitigarbha Hall has three bays, a single-eave hanging gable roof, and doors at the front and back, also called the passing hall. The main deity inside is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, flanked by Elder Min Gong and Monk Daoming, all with gentle and kind expressions. Behind them is the usual Guanyin. The four Heavenly Kings on both sides are considered the crown of Sansheng Temple’s polychrome sculptures. The statues are majestic and lively, with realistic facial details and clearly defined beards. The most eye-catching is the dragon held by the Wide-Eyed Heavenly King. The dragon, which should be coiled around the arm, is instead lifted mid-air by ghost soldiers, with its head and horns sharp and dynamic. The Heavenly King looks down while the giant dragon raises its head, forming a tense moment of subduing the dragon. The walls are fully covered with Qing Dynasty murals depicting the Ten Yama Kings and the three officials of the underworld, illustrating a complete system of afterlife judgment, and are well preserved. Behind the Ksitigarbha Hall is the Mahavira Hall, a large wooden structure from the Jin Dynasty with three bays in width and four purlins in depth, featuring a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. The eaves are gently curved and raised, with five-purlin bracket sets and 45-degree diagonal purlins between them, which are distinctive Liao-Jin architectural features. The hall uses the common Liao-Jin technique of reducing columns, and the roof is a fully exposed Ming-style structure. Inside, the Huayan Trinity is enshrined, which is the origin of the temple’s name. The Buddhist murals on the east and west walls are presented in a comic-strip style, with multiple scenes arranged in rows on each wall. Each scene has inscriptions, combining text and images with strong narrative qualities. However, the mural lines are rough, colors direct, and proportions of figures somewhat distorted, clearly the work of folk painters, unlike the meticulous, richly colored, and gold-leafed Shui and Land paintings of the Princess Temple. This unrefined boldness is exactly what court painters could not replicate—they could not capture this “earthy” flavor. These murals were not made for royalty or high monks but for rural folk, telling Buddhist stories panel by panel like a comic book for the illiterate. Among many temples in Shanxi, comic-strip style Buddhist murals are rare, and Sansheng Temple is a well-preserved example with a strong folk art style. The north wall depicts the Four Great Kings, all Qing Dynasty works. The column capitals in both the Ksitigarbha and Mahavira Halls are decorated with dragon king clay masks, a unique relic of rain-praying beliefs that developed in northern Shanxi due to drought and water scarcity. When leaving, the courtyard was empty, and the halls were silent in the afternoon light, peaceful and quiet, almost unknown to the world.

Coming down from Mount Wutai, I went directly to Sansheng Temple, not far from Shahe Town, where I saw the "Dragon King Swallowing Mouth" for the first time—a unique decoration on ancient buildings. The Dragon King Swallowing Mouth subtly changes the aura of the ancient architecture. It was only later, when I saw similar dragon head decorations on the Hanging Temple and Yungang Grottoes, that I gradually realized this might be a cultural symbol unique to northern Shanxi. 🌟 It is said that the special feature of the Dragon King Swallowing Mouth at Sansheng Temple is that some dragon heads have three eyes on their foreheads, some resemble the Bagua pattern, and others have uneven grooves. Besides the usual meaning of favorable weather and good harvests, it also symbolizes a wise eye reaching the heavens and the ability to distinguish evil and avoid misfortune. Sansheng Temple consists of two elevated courtyards, with the main highlights being the Mahavira Hall and the Kṣitigarbha Hall. 🍀 The Mahavira Hall is a wooden structure from the Jin and Yuan dynasties with a xieshan (hip-and-gable) roof. The eaves feature diagonal arches and beams. Inside, there are no interior columns, greatly expanding the worship space. The children symbolize many offspring and blessings, while the grapes represent abundant harvests; these express the simple hopes of ancient people for life. ☘️ Polychrome sculptures: The main deity, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, is richly decorated with powdered gold layering techniques, with deeply three-dimensional folds in the robes and luxurious gilded patterns. The Heavenly Kings’ armor is layered distinctly, with detailed fish scale and floral patterns, and expressive faces. Behind the Buddha altar is a seated Guanyin facing backward, leaning against green and blue mountain rocks, accompanied by small clay sculptures themed on Journey to the West. 🖌️ Murals: The Ten Kings of Hell judgment scenes are painted as segmented comic strips, vividly depicting scenes such as the mountain of knives, reincarnation, and the judgment of good and evil. This narrative style of painting is reminiscent of the little picture books I read as a child, making it easy to understand. This pictorial storytelling method has been a common practice for thousands of years. Besides the harshness of the underworld’s judgment, there are also scenes of Guanyin saving those in suffering, evoking the great vow of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva: "Until hell is empty, I vow not to become a Buddha."
