Good to know: 💡 Many overwater resorts are only accessible by boat, so always check transfer schedules before booking. 💡 Stay at least 2 nights—otherwise you’ll lose valuable time on arrival and departure days. 💡 Not every overwater resort has direct access to a sandy beach, so check recent reviews and maps before choosing one. ⸻ ⛰️ Choose Zhangjiajie if you prefer… ✔️ Active holidays with lots of walking. ✔️ Dramatic mountain landscapes. ✔️ Incredible viewpoints that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. ✔️ Cable cars, glass walkways, and scenic hiking trails. ✔️ Cooler mountain temperatures compared to many Asian cities in summer. Good to know: 💡 Start exploring early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. 💡 Wear comfortable hiking shoes—even if you plan to use cable cars, you’ll still walk quite a lot. 💡 Allow at least 2–3 full days to explore the main areas without rushing. ⸻ My opinion? If your goal is to relax, I’d choose Semporna. 🏝️ If your goal is to be constantly amazed by nature, I’d choose Zhangjiajie. ⛰️ The best part? Have you heard that horror story? "You can't do anything in China without Alipay." You think you'll arrive and end up hungry and miserable. It's not that scary. We've traveled around China several times over the past year. And almost everywhere we paid with regular yuan cash. Yes, sometimes shop assistants would look thoughtfully at a large bill and run off to find change. But we only had one refusal to accept cash during our entire trip. And even then, it was small change. 💸Of course, China lives in the digital age. There are places where it's difficult to find QR codes: 🎟️ Ticket vending machines 🚴 Bicycle rentals 🍽️ Some cafes allow you to order via QR code But even there, we found a way out. We simply asked the locals for help—and the Chinese were happy to oblige. One time, a girl at the train station bought us a ticket with her own money, and we gave her cash. My main advice Buy yuan in advance at home. Be sure to bring small bills. The more 10, 20, and 50 yuan bills you have, the easier it will be. With a large 1,000 yuan bill, the seller might look for change, or they might not find it at all. It's better not to risk it. 📌 Result Of course, Alipay and WeChat Pay are easier to pay with, but you don't need to set them up. If you're traveling to China as a regular tourist, you don't have to worry about anything. Cash is accepted everywhere. Just buy yuan, bring smaller bills, and enjoy your trip.

The Big Buddha on Lantau Island isn't just a giant statue. It's a place where the sky, mountains, and absolute tranquility come together to create one of the most unforgettable experiences in Hong Kong. Today, I'm sharing an ultimate guide to this magnificent landmark. 🏯✨ 🚡 How to get there There are three options, and each brings its own vibe. 1. Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car — the most scenic route. 🚡 The panoramic views of the mountains, the sea, and the airport down below will blow your mind. A one-way ticket is about 160 HKD, but I highly recommend grabbing a Crystal Cabin with a glass floor for at least one leg of the trip — it's totally worth it. The ride takes around 25 minutes, and it's an adventure in itself. 2. Bus No. 23 from Tung Chung Station — cheap and cheerful. 🚌 For just about 20 HKD, you'll cruise up the winding mountain roads for around 45 minutes. If the cable car is closed for maintenance or it's too windy, this bus is your go-to option. 3. Hiking the trail — for the hardcore adventurers. 🥾 We actually saw people hiking up the trail. It's a full-on trek that takes serious time and energy, but it guarantees an experience you'll remember for a lifetime. 🙏 Why is it worth a visit? The Big Buddha itself is the largest seated bronze Buddha statue in the world. It stands 34 meters tall, or almost 50 meters if you count the pedestal. To reach the top, you'll have to conquer 268 steps. But once you stand at the base, gazing up at this giant surrounded by mountains and clouds, you realize — it was 100% worth the climb. 🏔️ Surrounding the statue is an entire monastic complex: Po Lin Monastery, pagodas, gorgeous gardens, and incense burners. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of absolute peace and majesty. You can even go inside the statue, which houses a museum of relics and an observation deck, though there's an entry fee (around 30 HKD). The statue looks incredibly epic from a distance where the pedestal is hidden, making it look like the Buddha is sitting directly on the hill — I actually put a photo of that on the cover. 💡 Pro Tips · Get there in the morning, right when it opens. It gets packed with tourists later in the day, and the sun can be brutal. Plus, going early leaves you with enough time to check out the fishing village and explore the rest of Lantau Island. · Bring water, sunscreen, and comfy shoes. Those 268 steps are no joke. · On your way back, swing by Tai O fishing village — it's super close, and you can feast on some amazing local seafood. Sadly, we missed out on this because we were running behind schedule. 💎 The Bottom Line The Big Buddha is an absolute must-do in Hong Kong. China is literally another planet! 🪐 To ensure a comfortable trip, prepare in advance 👇 🔌 1. Plugs and Adapters: China uses type A and type I plugs. Check if they differ from your country's standards and buy a universal adapter in advance. Hotels don't always provide them. 😉 💵 2. Money and Payment Apps · Exchange some of your money for yuan cash—keep it as a backup. · Download Alipay, verify your passport, and link a foreign card. You can pay in two ways: directly from your card by scanning it or from the built-in wallet—choose what's most convenient! · Download WeChat and set up WeChat Pay as a backup. WeChat is also useful for communicating with guides and hotel staff. 🌐 3. eSIM and Navigation. Google services, YouTube, Instagram, and common messaging apps are blocked in China. · Get an international eSIM with a data plan before your trip (for example, on trip.com, get at least 2 GB per day). With it, Google services and social media will work without a VPN. · Download Amap for navigation. You can add hotels and attractions to your favorites in advance. 🛂 4. Passport. Carry your original passport with you ALWAYS! In China, it is required upon hotel check-in, scanned at the entrance to main squares, at train stations (it works like a train ticket), and in many parks and museums. 🎟️ 5. Attraction Tickets. To ensure everything goes according to plan, I recommend purchasing tickets for attractions in advance online at trip.com, as they offer a variety of discounts. Many things aren't sold at the ticket office. Otherwise, there will be huge lines. I only know one place where we bought tickets at the ticket office—to the panda sanctuary ☝🏼 📕 6. Offline translators. English rarely helps in China (about 5% of the time) 😅. Download Google Translate or Yandex Translate and download offline packages for Chinese, English, and your native language. 🚕 7. Taxis. Install the Didi app—Chinese taxis are inexpensive, and you can pay in cash. 📋 8. Hotel address in Chinese. Print the voucher or save a screenshot of the hotel name and address in Chinese (not English!) to your gallery. This will make it easier for you to give directions to locals if you can't find your hotel on your own (I had this happen, wandering the streets for half an hour, trying every door, and every time it wasn't mine 😁). 🧻 9. Pack some wipes in your backpack. Public restrooms almost never have paper—a pack of dry and wet wipes will definitely come in handy! Trust me 😁 🤗 10. Bring a good mood. To avoid panic, I've compiled (and am sharing) a clear arrival guide for myself 👇 ☀️ If I arrive DURING THE DAY (rare, but it happens): There are plenty of options for getting into the city: · The metro is cheap and fast, if your suitcase isn't heavy. · Shuttles/Aeroexpresses are a happy medium in terms of price and comfort. · Taxis - only from official counters; don't hail private taxis at the exit. 🌙 If I arrive AT NIGHT (standard): That's where things get more interesting. I have three tried-and-true options: 1. Stay at the airport until morning The shops and souvenir shops are closed, so shopping is out of the question. However, there are 24-hour cafes and sometimes showers. You can stay until 5 or 6 am and then take the first metro. 2. Airport hotel If I'm really pressed for time, I book a hotel right in the transit area or nearby. Important: if I arrive at 2 am, you need to book for the previous day, otherwise you won't be able to check in until midday. 3. Taxi or transfer (my favorite) I can catch a taxi on the spot, but the lines and nighttime rates are a real pain. 🔥 My life hack: I pre-book a transfer directly through the Trip.com app. It's cheaper than a local metered taxi, and the driver meets me with a sign, helps with my luggage, and knows the hotel address—no need to explain myself in Chinese at 3 am.
