If you want to experience the romance of the steam age against one of the most beautiful backdrops in Wales, a trip to the Llangollen Railway is a non-negotiable. It’s the only standard-gauge heritage railway in North Wales, and it feels like stepping onto the set of a period drama. How to Get Around The Train Itself: This is your primary transport! The line runs for 10 miles from Llangollen to Corwen, following the path of the River Dee. By Car: Llangollen is easily accessible via the A5. There is a large pay-and-display car park just a short walk from the station. On Foot: Once you reach the various stations (like Berwyn or Carrog), there are stunning waymarked riverside and woodland walks that allow you to explore the valley before catching a later train back. Must-See Attractions The Berwyn Viaduct: Keep your camera ready as the train crosses this stunning structure—the views of the white-water rapids below are breathtaking. Berwyn Station: One of the most photogenic stations in the UK. It’s nestled in a deep gorge and looks exactly as it did in the 1950s. The Locomotive Sheds: Head to the end of the platform at Llangollen to see the engineering team working on the massive steam engines. Corwen Station: The newest addition to the line, offering a great gateway into the historic town of Corwen for a quick explore. Hotel Guide Riverside Luxury: The Wild Pheasant Hotel & Spa is perfect for a relaxing stay after a day of exploring. Quaint & Central: The Hand Hotel offers classic Welsh hospitality and sits right overlooking the River Dee and the bridge. Country Escape: The Chainbridge Hotel is literally perched over the river next to the Berwyn station—you can hear the steam whistles from your room! Food Guide On-Board Dining: Check for special "Cream Tea" or "Fish and Chip" train days for a unique dining experience while you chuff along. Station Buffet: The Llangollen Station Tea Room serves a proper "Railways Refreshment" with local cakes and strong tea. Local Favorite: The Corn Mill in Llangollen is a converted mill with a deck over the rapids. It’s the perfect spot for a post-train dinner. Shopping Guide Station Gift Shop: A paradise for railway enthusiasts, stocking everything from heritage books to local memorabilia and toys. Llangollen High Street: Just minutes from the station, you'll find wonderful independent shops like Propolis for local honey and artisan crafts. Antique Hunting: The town is known for its quirky secondhand bookstores and antique nooks hidden in the side streets. Pro Tip: Try to book the "Driver’s Eye View" if you’re a real enthusiast, or simply aim for the front carriage behind the engine to hear the rhythmic chuffing and smell the nostalgic coal smoke. Also, check their calendar for "Day Out With Thomas" events if you’re traveling with kids!

The summer sun in Europe is simply lovely. We drove to Flint Castle at dusk, and the sky was still a brilliant blue! Located near the town of Flint in Flintshire, the castle sits right along the Dee Estuary. Commissioned by King Edward I of England in 1277, it was among the very first castles he built in Wales, making it a classic ruin of a 13th-century medieval stone fortress. Today, only sections of crumbling walls and the foundation of a circular tower remain. Yet, it stands as a witness to the history of English rule over Wales! Coupled with the fact that there are very few tourists (my absolute favorite setting), the site exudes a rustic, beautifully desolate vibe. It is sure to captivate history buffs and castle enthusiasts alike. Visitors can follow a modern metal walkway up to the tower ruins, where you can imagine the living conditions of the soldiers back then while taking in panoramic views of the Dee Estuary, surrounding plains, and wetlands. The striking contrast between the ancient ruins and the modern walkway, paired with the natural beauty of the estuary, provides an absolutely stunning backdrop for photography! There are endless possibilities for unique compositions!

#FebruaryDestinations2026 This morning, after visiting a train station in Wales with a long, complicated name, I enjoyed a leisurely lunch in a cozy restaurant with a river view. I'd like to recommend DYLAN’s restaurant near Menai Bridge. The food, ambiance, and service were superb, and it's near St. George’s pier 👍, highly recommended. After lunch, we walked to a suspension bridge. It turns out this suspension bridge has a significant history; it's called the Menai Suspension Bridge, also known as Pont y Borth. It spans the Menai Strait in North Wales, connecting Anglesey, and is a vital land route to Ireland. Designed by Thomas Telford, known as the "Father of Modern Civil Engineering," construction began in 1819 and was completed in 1826. Approximately 417 meters long, with the bridge deck about 30 meters above the sea, it was the world's longest suspension bridge at the time of its completion. The suspension bridge structure uses wrought iron chains and stone towers, with a wooden deck. It has undergone several modernizations (the wooden deck was replaced with steel; the wrought iron chains were replaced with steel cables). When we visited, it was during a large-scale overhaul from 2022 to 2024, replacing all the suspension cables and renovating the bridge deck in preparation for its 200th anniversary of opening to traffic in 2026 (this year). We were fortunate enough to see it there in person then, spanning the turbulent river—a truly rare sight! More than 200 years ago, as one of the world's first large-scale modern suspension bridges, it solved the technical challenges of building a bridge over a turbulent strait, setting a benchmark for later bridge engineering. Truly amazing! 👍👍👍 And it's listed as a Grade I listed building in the UK. It's unexpected that such a magnificent structure exists in this quiet little town. The monument beside the bridge was erected to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Thomas Telford's birth. #travel2026 #suspensionbridge #suspensionbridgevisit #UK #Wales

#FebruaryDestinations2026 This is Llanfairpwll railway station, located on Anglesey Island in Wales, UK, famous for its incredibly long name. "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" is the Welsh spelling of the station. The station name, with 58 letters, is one of the longest official place names in the English-speaking world, often shortened to Llanfairpwll. This extremely long name was "invented" in the mid-19th century as a marketing gimmick to attract railway passengers. The name roughly translates to "St. Mary's Church in the valley of white hazelnut trees beside the rushing whirlpool, and St. Tissilio's Church beside the Red Rock Cave." The station opened in 1848, making it one of the oldest stations in Wales. The red-brick architecture is typical of this station, and the station signs still use full, long names. It's a popular tourist destination; there's a small market next to the train station where you can buy souvenirs, but it's not very crowded, making it a typical rural station. Trains run approximately every two hours on weekdays, and less frequently on Sundays. #TrainStation #TrainStationName #WalesTravel #Welsh #travel2026

#FebruaryDestinations2026 Flint Castle (Welsh: Castell y Fflint) is a castle located in Flint, Wales, England, built during the reign of Edward I. Construction began in 1277, and its exterior, modeled after medieval French castles, is quite unique among English castles. Flint Castle is now open to the public free of charge. Over nearly 800 years, most of the castle has been destroyed, with only the towers and underground levels remaining relatively intact. Because the castle was built on the shore, at high tide the coastline almost merges with the castle, creating a unique spectacle. #AncientCastle
