Ghasri travel guide and discussion

I spent 2 wonderful days in Gozo, and if you’re visiting Malta, I’d highly recommend staying overnight rather than making it just a day trip. The island has such a peaceful rhythm that you’ll want time to simply enjoy it. I stayed at Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse in Victoria, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. The hosts were incredibly warm and recommended some fantastic local restaurants—I genuinely think Gozo has some of the best food I had in Malta. I’ll share my favourite food spots in another video! Everything on the island is well connected by bus, so I never felt the need to rent a car. Victoria is such a charming town to base yourself in. Its narrow streets, local cafés, and relaxed atmosphere make it a wonderful place to wander after a day of sightseeing. Sitting above the town is the magnificent Citadel, one of my favourite places in Gozo. Walk through its ancient stone streets, explore the old fortifications, and don’t miss the panoramic views across the island—they’re especially beautiful around sunset. Some of my other favourite experiences were visiting Ta’ Pinu Basilica in the evening, Wied il-Għasri, Dwejra Bay, and the historic Salt Pans. If you visit Comino, make sure to spend some time at the Blue Lagoon. The water is an unbelievable shade of turquoise, and I’d highly recommend taking a dip. If you can, catch one of the last boats back—most of the crowds will have left by then, and watching the sunset over the lagoon is pure magic. I visited at the end of January and beginning of February, and honestly, I think it’s one of the best times to experience Gozo. The island is beautifully green after the winter rains, hotel prices are much lower, and many of the island’s most beautiful places can be enjoyed without the crowds. While some water activities weren’t operating, I found the peace and quiet to be well worth the trade-off. Gozo is one of those places where life slows down. No rush, no noise—just beautiful landscapes, welcoming people, and the feeling that, for a little while, everything becomes wonderfully calm. I already know I’ll be back. #gozo #visitgozo #malta #comino #bluelagoon #slowtravel #traveleurope #wintersun #hiddengems #naturelovers #travelinspiration #bucketlist #tripmoments #tripcom

Why Malta, and why NOW? Malta just became Europe’s fastest-growing tourism destination of 2026. Between January and August, the island welcomed a record 3,160,974 inbound tourists — a 17.9% jump over the same period last year, with August alone bringing 539,655 visitors . Yet here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors stay in Sliema or St Julian’s, see Valletta and the Blue Lagoon, and leave. They miss the wild western cliffs, the hidden fjords of Gozo, and the €0.50 pastizzi where Malta actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚌 TRANSPORT: The €2 Bus That Beats Every Taxi The mistake starts at Malta International Airport. Taxis quote €20–30 to Valletta or Sliema. The Malta Public Transport bus costs a fraction of that — a single journey is €2.50 in summer (June to mid-October) and €2.00 in winter, valid for 2 hours with free transfers . The Explore Card gives you 7 days of unlimited travel for €25, and the 12 Single Day Journeys card costs €19 and can be shared between travellers . The Gozo ferry rule. The Gozo Channel ferry connects Malta to Gozo in 25 minutes and runs every 45 minutes. Foot passengers travel free — you only pay when returning. The bus from Valletta to Ċirkewwa (the ferry terminal) takes about 1 hour, and the ferry drops you at Mġarr, where buses connect to Victoria and the rest of Gozo. The one thing to know: Malta drives on the left. Roads are narrow, winding, and often congested. For solo travelers, buses are the move. For groups of two or more, a rental car splits the cost and unlocks the hidden corners — but parking in Valletta is a nightmare. 🍲 FOOD: The €0.50 Pastizzi That Beats Every Restaurant Maltese food is not fancy. It’s pastizzi — flaky, diamond-shaped pastries filled with ricotta cheese (tal-irkotta) or mushy peas (tal-piżelli), sold from every pastizzeria for €0.50–1 each . It’s ftira — a crusty Maltese sandwich with tuna, olives, and capers. And it’s rabbit stew (fenkata) — the national dish, slow-cooked in wine and garlic, served with spaghetti or fries. The pastizzeria rule. A pastizzi costs €0.50–0.80 from any pastizzeria — the older and more unassuming, the better. Crystal Palace in Rabat has been serving them since 1956, 24 hours a day, for €0.50 each . A ftira runs €5–8. A rabbit stew at a local restaurant costs €12–18. Look for the pastizzeria with the longest line of locals in work clothes. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Pastizzi — the everyday staple. €0.50–0.80 each. · Ftira — the Maltese sandwich. €5–8. · Fenkata (rabbit stew) — the national dish. €12–18. · Ħobż biż-żejt — Maltese bread with tomato, oil, and tuna. €4–6. · Kinnie — the bitter orange soda that Maltese people love. €1.50–2.50. The Cisk rule. Cisk is Malta’s national beer. At a local bar, a bottle costs €2.50–3.50. At a tourist bar in St Julian’s, expect €5–7. Drink it cold, like the locals do. 🗺️ HIDDEN MALTA: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Fomm ir-Riħ (Western Coast) — The wild west coast of Malta, where cliffs drop dramatically into the sea and the landscape feels like another island entirely. The name means “mouth of the wind”, and you’ll understand why the moment you arrive. The hike down to the narrow pebble beach takes about 20 minutes — bring sturdy shoes and water, as there are no facilities . No tour buses. No entrance fee. 2. Wied il-Għasri (Gozo) — A hidden fjord-like inlet on Gozo’s northern coast, carved by water and wind into a narrow, dramatic canyon that opens onto the sea. The water is turquoise, the walls are limestone, and the silence is total. The narrow inlet keeps the water incredibly calm, making it a dream for snorkeling . Go early in the morning. You’ll likely have it to yourself. 3. Coral Lagoon (Mellieħa) — Known locally as the “Dragon’s Eye”, this is a natural rock pool formed by a collapsed sea cave, connected to the open sea by a narrow tunnel. It’s less crowded, deeper, and perfect for snorkeling or cliff diving than the famous Blue Lagoon . Access is by boat or a hike along the cliffs. No facilities. No entrance fee. Just wild Gozo. Honorable mention: Palazzo Parisio (Naxxar) — a stunning 19th-century palace with opulent interiors and gorgeous formal gardens, right in the main square of a traditional hilltop town that most tourists never visit . 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Malta is moderate for the Mediterranean — cheaper than Italy or France, but not as cheap as Greece or Portugal. · Budget traveler: $70 (€60) per day — hostel dorms, pastizzi, Tallinja bus card . · Mid-range traveler: $161 (€138) per day — private rooms, restaurant meals, occasional taxis . · Pastizzi: €0.50–0.80 each. · Ftira: €5–8. · Rabbit stew (fenkata): €12–18. · Cisk beer (local bar): €2.50–3.50. · Single bus journey (summer): €2.50. · 7-day unlimited bus pass (Explore Card): €25. · Hostel dorm: €15–25 per night. · Guesthouse (private room): €40–70 per night. Realistic daily budget: €60–138 depending on your style. Budget travelers can stay under €70 with hostels, pastizzi, and the Tallinja card. Mid-range travelers spend around €120 with private rooms and occasional restaurant meals. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Malta runs on warmth, formality, and a deep sense of Catholic tradition. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Greet with a handshake and “Bonġu.” A handshake is the standard greeting for first meetings. Say “Bonġu” (good morning) or “Grazzi” (thank you) — locals appreciate even a basic attempt at Maltese. Between friends, a kiss on each cheek is common. 2. Dress modestly at churches. Malta is a devoutly Catholic country. Cover your shoulders and knees when entering St John’s Co-Cathedral or any church. No beachwear in towns, villages, or religious sites. 3. Don’t be loud. Maltese culture values reserved and courteous behavior. Raised voices in public, on buses, or in restaurants are considered rude. 4. Punctuality matters. Malta is punctual — arriving late for a meeting, a tour, or a dinner reservation is considered disrespectful. If you’re going to be late, call ahead. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. In restaurants, 5–10% is standard for good service if not already included. For taxis, round up. For tour guides, €5–10 per person per day. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Malta in 2026 — it’s Europe’s fastest-growing destination, up 18% year-on-year. · You want to eat pastizzi for €0.50 and swim in the Coral Lagoon before the crowds find it. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. #hellohalloween Perched high above the island, the Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse in Gozo is one of those places where time seems to pause. The winding road up offers breathtaking views of the countryside, and once at the top, the panorama stretches endlessly — from the cliffs to the glittering sea. 🌾🌊 As the light turns golden in the late afternoon, the lighthouse stands proudly against the sky, its gentle beam guiding the way as evening falls. I stayed to watch the sunset paint Gozo in shades of amber and violet, and it felt like the whole island was holding its breath. 📍 Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse, Għasri, Gozo 🕒 Best time to visit: Late afternoon to sunset 🚶♀️ How to get there: A scenic walk or short drive from Għasri village — bring water and enjoy the peaceful climb!
