A stunning location with panoramic views of Mora de Rubielos
Exploring Spain's Central Plateau ~ Teruel Region
Mora de Rubielos was reconquered by Alfonso II from the Muslims in the 12th century. To defend the area, a castle and a sturdy wall were constructed, and this defense system was further reinforced at the end of the 13th century. The two towers belong to the second line of defense. This is a truly beautiful place, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view of Mora de Rubielos from above. Perhaps there should be more signs providing information about this location. Yes, everything is simply impeccable.

Entrance to the ancient city of Beceite
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
It is located at the entrance to Beceite. When you cross it, you wouldn't notice it if it wasn't so narrow that only one car can pass and has to wait for another car from the opposite direction to arrive.
According to the tourist brochure, it is from the 16th century. There is a hermitage around it, as well as Cala Mati for a snack. You can walk down one side or the other, it has a walkway to enjoy the view from under the bridge, and a mini trail where you can see the river, trees, waterfalls, old buildings...it's all beautiful.

Medieval Town
Exploring the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (Region)
The medieval town of Calaceite belongs to the Matarraña region, located in the lower area of the "Aragon Strip" in Teruel Province. This incredible town is a place where both Spanish and Catalan are spoken. In addition to its well-preserved historic center, Calaceite and its surrounding areas offer many attractions worth visiting. Strolling through its streets and corners will transport you to another era, with its squares, majestic buildings, and more. However, it is unfortunate to find its beautiful church closed. Listed among Spain's most beautiful towns, Calaceite is truly amazing and makes for a vacation well worth taking.

Its history can be traced back to the 18th century
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
It gets its name from the waterfall that flows down the mountainside and into a pond called Llovedor. It was built on the spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. In the monastery, you can hear the singing of the Virgin Mary by holding a coin. Curiously, this statue is contemporary with the Our Lady of Montserrat and bears similarities to it.
The car park is well signposted and we almost reached the top but it was a bit of a walk. The lovedor is the symbol of Castelo de Castelo and it is said that it never dries up, even during severe droughts. This is a free to access site.

Absolutely don't miss visiting this historic castle.
Spanish Central Plateau Adventure ~ Teruel (Region)
You must hike up from the town square, winding through narrow streets, and finally climb a rocky path. Some steep sections might be challenging. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the valleys and mountains. Take some time to read the information and learn about the history of this Templar castle. If you're visiting in summer, be sure to wear a hat and bring water, as there is no shade. Highly recommended!

Religious Art Collection
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
It is located in the ancient and noble rooms of the Episcopal Palace, adjacent to the Cathedral. The museum has an interesting collection of religious art, including paintings, sculptures, precious metalwork and musical instruments, as well as textiles from the 14th to 18th centuries. Among the highlights are a group of Flemish tapestries telling the story of Gideon, a 14th-century processional cross, and a collection of chalices. During the visit you can also visit the ancient private rooms of the Bishops of Albarracín, which are interesting for their simplicity. From the balconies of these rooms you can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Prehistoric traces
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
It is part of the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Prado del Navazo Sanctuary, also known as the “Navazo Torricos,” is 4 square meters in size and features carvings and large white animal figures. Later, many isolated bulls and archers were added. This is a Post-Palaeolithic shelter dating back to the Neolithic period (7,000-5,000 BC).
They belong to an outstanding group of petroglyphs in the Albarracín, which is noteworthy because it is the only one in which the figures are all white, contrasting with the red tones of the rock walls.

Full of unique civil engineering buildings
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
La Lonja in the Plaza de España may seem small, but it is a very important building in the city. It was built in the 16th century and, together with the Alcañiz Town Hall, it forms the most important civic complex in Alcañiz. The former university church is always in front of us, little joke! Its main facade is made of stone, while the sides are in brick, with a Mudejar style. It has 3 floors, the lower floor has a portal with Ionic columns and a rectangular pediment on top. These projections are wooden eaves that represent the greatness of an era and are typical of the architecture of the Aragonese community. Even just from the outside, it is possible to enjoy the Mudéjar air throughout this Aragonese neighborhood. This building will be home to the Alcañiz Art Museum in the future, and the famous Ferris wheel that was once located in the Calatravo Castle is now home to the Town Hall. Soon we will all be able to enjoy this work.

Traitor's Gate
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
The troops of Peter I (Peter the Cruel) passed through this gate on their way to conquer the city. Located next to Arcos, it is also known as the Gate of San Miguel. History records that when the troops of the cruel Pedro I approached Teruel destroying and overthrowing everything in their path, a traitorous judge made a pact and opened an entrance in the city walls to avoid torture. Thus the town was taken without reprisal, and the traitorous judges fled with the conquering force.

A beautiful station
Walking tour in the Spanish Central Plateau ~ Teruel (region)
It is located west of the city center, nestled in a valley. Although more than a century has passed since the completion of the complex, the passenger terminal still retains its original appearance with few major changes, standing out from the surrounding environment and being very quiet. Central point on the Zaragoza - Teruel - Valencia line, with several flights per day to both capitals and even further afield (Huesca, Alicante, Murcia...).

Hotel La Torre del Visco
Spain
#freehotelstay
The original and the best. We have been visiting 'La Torre' (calling it a hotel doesn't really do it justice) for fifteen odd years. There are similar destinations/hotels in the area however we always return here. The experience is so beautifully honed without being clinical and the food would deem the kitchen a five star restaurant in it's own right. The journey is an amazing trip in itself once you get on one of best roads I've driven on and of course with Castellón Airport forty minutes away we worry it may become too easy to get to (haha).
Rarely is one completely satisfied with holiday accommodation (unless money is no object) and even rarer to continue to be pleasantly surprised. You can't visit this part of Spain and not stop here for a bit. A must rather than a recommendation. Enjoy.
