[Porto / Portugal] ~Wander into a picture-perfect city painted with beautiful blue "Azulejo" tiles and incredible gastronomy~ I recently went on a solo trip to Porto, a stunning port city in northern Portugal! From the morning right through to a midnight festival, I'm sharing my absolute best 1-day itinerary packed with all of Porto's charm. This post might be a bit long because there’s so much to love, so make sure to save it for your future Porto trip 📌 · -------------------- ### ⏰ 8:00–11:00 | The Perfect Start: Beautiful Streets and Freshly Baked Egg Tarts! Taking the train from the airport to the city center, the moment I stepped out of the station, the stunning "Capela das Almas" (Chapel of Souls) appeared right before my eyes! The vibrant blue Azulejos (decorative tiles) were absolutely breathtaking, instantly pulling me into the magical vibe of Porto ✨ You absolutely cannot visit Porto without eating egg tarts (Pastel de Nata)! My first stop was the famous bakery, [FÁBRICA NATA]. Their freshly baked egg tarts (1.50€) are flaky on the outside and perfectly gooey on the inside... truly exquisite! I sprinkled a little cinnamon on top, and honestly, it ranks right in my top three (actually, probably number one!) best egg tarts I've ever had. So good...! Next up was [Mercado do Bolhão]! The market was bustling with energy, and you can enjoy fresh sea urchin (5€) and oysters (2.50€) right on the spot 🦪 With rows of cute, retro sardine tins and Azulejo-inspired souvenirs, just looking around was super exciting! · -------------------- ### ⏰ 11:00–13:00 | Historic Stained Glass, Art, and Tasty Street Eats ♪ Next, I headed to [São Bento Station (Porto São Bento)], often called "the most beautiful train station in the world." The floor-to-ceiling Azulejos are breathtakingly beautiful! The color intensity varies between the upper and lower sections, and knowing the history of how they’ve been carefully restored and maintained over the years actually made me a bit emotional 🥹 While wandering the streets, I found so many interesting shops! ・Mundo Fantástico da Sardinha Portuguesa: A specialty sardine shop that feels like an amusement park! They even have Japanese guides, and you can find a tin printed with your birth year. The vintage designs are adorable! ・Manteigaria: I ordered another egg tart (1.50€) here along with a traditional drink called "CAPILÉ" (2.50€). CAPILÉ is a refreshing mix of light sweetness and subtle tartness—perfect for revitalizing my tired body after all that walking 🥤 ・Prometeu Artesanato: A lovely shop packed with ceramics. I bought a unique postcard made from cork fabric (1€)! It feels very Portuguese and makes for a perfect souvenir. ・PASTEL DE BACALHAU: I tried the famous codfish croquette stuffed with cheese (8€). It’s priced for tourists, but the shop features beautiful rug art exhibitions, creating a wonderful space to enjoy a tasty croquette while soaking up some culture! · -------------------- ### ⏰ 13:00–17:00 | Overwhelming Scale! Dom Luís I Bridge & A Relaxing Walk Along the Douro River In the afternoon, I finally made my way to Porto's iconic landmark, the [Dom Luís I Bridge]! Seeing this double-deck iron bridge up close, the scale and impact are far beyond what you'd imagine! The brick foundation is also super cool, making it a great photo spot from every angle. Across the river, there were tons of colorful ribbons tied to the railing, adding a romantic touch 🎀 I crossed the bridge into the [Vila Nova de Gaia district] and took a little break at the [Mercado Beira-Rio], enjoying a fresh strawberry-mango juice (2.50€). Relaxing in the park, browsing through local supermarkets... I got to experience the local vibe at a leisurely pace, which is the ultimate luxury of traveling solo. · -------------------- ### ⏰ 17:00–24:30 | An Electric Night! Time Out Market & the Festa de São João 🎉 In the evening, I headed over to the [Time Out Market]! It happened to be game day, and everyone was gathered around a massive screen, cheering wildly! There was a DJ too, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric 🎧 I had the octopus salad (10€) at [MEIA-NAU], and the tender octopus mixed with a light, refreshing dressing was out of this world! For the night, I joined in on Porto's biggest event of the year, the "Festa de São João" (St. John's Festival), which happened to be going on! The streets were packed with people holding squeaky toy hammers (lol), playfully bopping each other on the head in the most peaceful, joyous celebration imaginable 😂 Apparently, getting hit on the head brings you good luck, so I blended in with the locals and partied my heart out until 12:30 AM! · -------------------- ### 💡 Trip Summary & Recommended Highlights Porto is incredibly walkable and compact, overflowing with cute vintage goods, fantastic food, and warm, welcoming people. It truly is the best city! Souvenirs like sardine-themed items and Azulejo trinkets are adorable no matter where you buy them, so I highly recommend this city to anyone who loves shopping for unique finds.
