CAVE-CASTLE COMPLEX ZARNI-PARNI. The historical complex consists of three caves - "Zarni er", "Parni er" and "Tsak er". The Zari and Parni cave castles were built in X-XIlI centuries and being located in front of the Kayan fortress had the great importance during the medieval history of Armenia. During the wars and nomad raids the cave castles were the safe shelter for the population of Haghpat and nearby villages. Manuscripts of Haghpat monastery, as well as property and its wealth were protected here The first cave was named after prince Zareh, whose name on local dialect was pronounced as Zarni. The cave has 605 square meters. The water source Katktan (Dripping water) permanently supplied the habitants with the clean water. During the cleansing works in the cave, to the right of the entrance, the winepress was discovered and this approves that cultivation of grapes and winemaking were the advanced branches of economic activity of the local population in the middle centuries. The Parni cave (Paroni, which translates as Lord) was the shelter for the secular and spiritual elders. In case of danger the large library of Haghpat monastery was protected here too, since the Zarni cave was unsuitable for it because of humidity of dripping waters. The small chamber contains exquisite murals depicting the stories of Jesus and his disciples. 🕍 Walking into the monastery, the towering dome, intersecting stone arches, smooth bluestone floors, and stone walls adorned with many intricate patterns all showcase the wisdom and craftsmanship of the ancients in every detail. 🕍 Outside the monastery, framed by blue skies and mountains, the pointed roofs are very photogenic, making every shot look like a masterpiece. Here, we also met a group of adorable Armenian students who were curious and enthusiastic, constantly asking to take photos with us, instantly making me feel a warm connection to this country.
