Nuwa Palace is in She County, about an hour’s drive from the city. Bring an umbrella as it can rain anytime on the mountain. Tickets are cheap but “subject to official daily announcements.” If the kids get tired, there are slide carts inside the park that save you from climbing most of the mountain. 3️⃣ Taiyuan | Shanxi Tianlongshan Grottoes and Jin Temple are perfect for telling kids a “historical tomb raider” story. The plank road at Tianlongshan is suspended over a valley, making you feel like you’re walking in the clouds. The kids ask why the Buddha’s hand is broken, and I tell them about the “Buddha destruction movement” along the way. They listen with fascination. ⚠️ It’s windy, so bring a jacket. The sun is strong at noon, but the light is better after 3 PM. The Jin Temple Museum has ancient trees and a flying bridge. Kids can run around three times without getting tired. 🍜 Don’t forget to buy a bowl of hand-shaved noodles at the Jin Temple entrance. They’re freshly cut and cooked, chewy with a sesame-scented chili oil. In the evening, visit Jinyang Lake Park. It’s windy by the lake, kids fly kites, and I lie on the grass daydreaming. 🕐 The sunset at Jinyang Lake is best around 7 PM. 4️⃣ Shizuishan | Ningxia Shahu Lake is where desert meets water, and kids will scream with excitement. The sand is so fine it feels like powder, and reeds grow in the lake, looking like an ink painting from afar. I let the kids walk barefoot in the sand, warm sand squeezing between their toes, making them laugh all the way. 🕐 After 5 PM, the sun isn’t as harsh, and you can still walk barefoot on the sand. 🚄 It’s only a half-hour high-speed train ride from Yinchuan. ⚠️ Bring plenty of water into the park. There are few places to buy water inside, and it’s expensive. You can take a boat through the reed beds, which kids love. If you bring a shovel, they can dig in the sand all afternoon. 5️⃣ Hainan | Qinghai Riyue Mountain and Guide National Geopark sit at 3,500 meters elevation and by the Yellow River, respectively. The wind at Riyue Mountain is strong enough to blow your hair wild. The sky feels low, almost pressing down, with white sheep scattered across the grassland. 🚄 Starting from Xining, you can tour both in one day by car. ⚠️ Watch for altitude sickness in kids. I brought oxygen and Rhodiola. Guide’s geopark looks like God’s palette, with Danxia red mountains like rust. The kids stood by the road watching the wind-eroded mountains and said, “They look like leftover mille crepe cake.” 🍜 In Guide town, street vendors sell freshly baked barley cakes, crispy outside and soft inside. 6️⃣ Shantou | Guangdong Nan’ao Island is where Guangdong locals escape the summer heat. The sea here rivals Sanya, but prices are half as much. We stayed on the island’s east side at Qing’ao Bay, with the sea right outside the window. At dusk, the tide recedes, revealing countless small crabs. The kids shine flashlights on them, and they scuttle sideways. ⚠️ The island has many seafood stalls, but check prices before ordering. I recommend “Sister Xu’s seafood” for fair prices and large shrimp. 🚄 Get off at Shantou Station, take a taxi to Laiwu Ferry, then a 20-yuan ferry to the island. ⏰ The Nan’ao Bridge closes by 10 PM. After that, you must stay on the island overnight. 7️⃣ Wuhan | Hubei Huanghelou Park, East Lake, Songyang Temple, and Huangpi Mulan Cultural Ecotourism Area can be visited together in two days. Huanghelou requires stairs at the entrance, but there’s an elevator nearby if the kids can’t climb. 🍜 Eat a bowl of hot dry noodles at Hubu Alley under Huanghelou. The Liujiaxia reservoir looks like sapphire blue from afar and crystal clear up close. We rented a boat to the lake’s center, surrounded by Danxia red mountains. The kids leaned over the boat and asked, “Is the water dyed blue?” 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Lanzhou to Linxia, then a taxi to the dock. Bingling Temple’s grottoes are older than Mogao Caves. Most places are free, have dense shade, and fewer tourists. It allows you to experience the authentic local life of the old city in southern Hebei, escape the summer heat, and has no trendy check-in spots, emphasizing relaxation and comfort. Day 1: Explore old city life + relax by the Qinhe River. Head out after 9 AM. Turn from Heping Road into the old residential area of Hanshan Street. This is the original residential area of Handan's old city. Chinese scholar trees provide shade for the entire street. Roadside breakfast stalls that have been open for 30 years offer crispy yet tender egg pockets for 5 yuan each. Pair it with a bowl of doumo for 3 yuan, and you have a hearty, fragrant breakfast that locals have enjoyed for decades. In the alleys, you'll find barbershops and shoe repair stalls, with elderly men sitting by walls, fanning themselves, and playing Chinese chess. Exploring here feels much more authentic than visiting a generic imitation ancient street. For lunch, eat at Lao Zhuai Noodle Restaurant at the alley entrance. The hand-pulled noodles with bone broth are chewy and flavorful. A large bowl for 10 yuan will fill you up. In the afternoon, take a bus west to the western section of Qinhe Country Park. They’re just 2 hours away by high-speed train, with overnight stays costing just over 100 yuan. Best of all, the experience rivals popular destinations, sometimes even better—you can even have an ancient city’s morning all to yourself. 01 Yueyang | Hunan ⏰ At 7 AM, Yueyang Tower is almost empty. I stood under the third-floor eaves as the river shimmered golden in the morning light. Honestly, once tourists arrive during the day, the peaceful feeling disappears. So my advice is to visit either early morning or late afternoon. 💡 If you only see one tower, that’s fine, but be sure to set aside two hours for Junshan Island. 🍜 Just a few steps from Yueyang Tower is Bianhe Street. I recommend Lao Hu’s fish balls and shrimp cakes. The blueberry jelly is decent too. ⚠️ The last ferry from Yueyang Tower to Junshan Island leaves at 4:30 PM. Here’s my conclusion: solo travelers should pick Beigushan for its strong cultural vibe and river views; families with kids should choose Jiaoshan, where you can take a ferry to the island, which kids will love; 📷 for photos, Jinshan is best, with its temple by the water and beautiful light after 5 PM. 🍜 Turn right after Jinshan Temple to find an old shop called “Xiao Ya Guogai Mian.” The noodles are chewy, served with braised meat and shredded ginger, all for just over 10 yuan. ⚠️ Beigushan has gentle slopes but narrow steps. If you walk quickly, you can barely finish it. ⚠️ Sandie Spring has many steps—2,600 in total—which is tough on knees. Be cautious if you’re with elderly or children. If you stay in a guesthouse, choose one at the foot of the mountain—it’s cheaper and convenient for getting up early to watch the sunrise. 🚄 From Yulin Station, take a bus to Dalong Mountain Town, then transfer to a local vehicle. 07 Xing’an League | Inner Mongolia Arxan isn’t a small town; it’s a whole forest’s freedom. ⏰ Mid-July to mid-August is the best season here. The grasslands are lush green, and wildflowers bloom everywhere. 💡 If you’re with elders or kids, take the route Tianchi—Shitanglin—Tuofengling Tianchi. It’s gentle slopes and easy paths. If you’re solo or with friends, challenge the Chaiheyuan Grand Canyon for a wild yet peaceful hiking experience. ⚠️ Arxan tickets are valid for two days with multiple entries. Don’t waste it. 🍜 The town has a few Mongolian restaurants. Try the hand-held meat and milk tea. Transportation: Ulanhot, the capital of Xing’an League, has buses to Arxan. 💡 It’s very cool in summer, with nighttime temperatures in the teens Celsius. Bring long sleeves. 08 Ningde | Fujian Ningde is a treasure of eastern Fujian, with several worlds hidden in one county. There is a place in the rural part of Handan called South Xiangtangshan grottoes that I am certain few foreigners outside of China has ever been to. Located near the historic coal mining town of Fengfeng, hundreds of Buddha statues were meticulously carved into the mountain thousands of years ago. The grottoes now are exposed to the sun and the rain, with little preservation efforts. Would be sad if they eventually get chipped away by Father Time.
