2026 Hawassa Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

We did a week-long private tour with Aman starting in Oromia. We spent three days exploring Bale Mountains National Park through scenic walks in various parts of this stunning park, encountering abundant wildlife such as wolves, the vibrant spring bloom of red hot pokers, and trekking across the Sanetti Plateau. Hussen was an excellent guide – knowledgeable, adaptable, and very attentive. Barch also impressed us as a skilled driver and a knowledgeable guide on Ethiopian culture. In Bale, the Nurobe Hotel provided cozy accommodations as a solid three-star option. After our time in Bale, we enjoyed a night's stay at Haile Resort Hawassa, a lovely destination that offered a pleasant rest following our active days in Bale. Continuing the journey, we drove to Addis, making a stop at Shala Lake National Park to see flamingos, plovers, ostriches, and hot springs, followed by lunch at Langano Lake. The next leg took us to Lalibela via flight, where we spent an enriching three days with Fikru and stayed at the Maribela Hotel. Upon returning to Addis, the Aya Hotel provided excellent accommodations during both stays there. The itinerary was thoughtfully crafted, and Aman’s support was consistently reliable, timely, and warmly hospitable. We will undoubtedly choose Aman for our next adventure in Ethiopia.

I am a frequent guest at Heron Hotel—it truly feels like my second home. The atmosphere is absolutely divine. The staff, especially Nicholas Kaluve, consistently amazes me with exceptional off-menu drinks. Additionally, the Food and Beverage Manager, Mr. Wesley, stands out for his kindness, calm demeanor, expertise, and welcoming nature. It's a place worth visiting anytime. Kudos!

Our trip was custom-organized for us by Eyayaw, spanning 18 days—sometimes traveling with friends, others just as a couple. Starting in Addis, we headed to Lake Tana, then moved on to the Simien Mountains with Dessie as our driver. In the Simien Mountains, we had a highly skilled tour guide and scout. We encountered many Gelada monkeys, breathtaking vistas, perfect hikes, and even a picnic by a waterfall. After several days, we flew back to Addis, met our friends, and traveled together by plane to Semera. The planning for our Danakil trip, including Erta Ale, was flawless. One vehicle carried food, drinks, and a talented cook—a crucial detail since we spent two nights sleeping under the stars. Along the way, we encountered salt lakes, volcanic formations, caravans, and other fascinating sites. At a secluded oasis, we found our beds already prepared. Eyayaw ensured mattresses, linens, and cushions were ready, and the cook had already whipped up an excellent meal. They even brought a portable toilet tent 😃. Though Dallol was a must-see highlight, Erta Ale was more rustic, and the volcanic lake wasn’t active during our visit. We then celebrated Easter in Lalibela, which was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Eyayaw shared extensive knowledge about the monolithic churches and their rich history. Following Easter, we explored the Bale Mountains and Hawassa as a couple. In Bale, we spotted endemic Ethiopian wolves, Nyala antelopes, and plenty of warthogs. Prior to this, we visited stunning lakes teeming with flamingos and pelicans, relaxing hot springs, and beautiful landscapes. Overall, the entire journey was absolutely marvelous. Benjamin, our driver, was incredibly kind and made sure all our wishes were fulfilled. Most of the trip was completed in a reliable 4x4 vehicle. A huge thank you to Eyayaw and his team for giving us such an unforgettable vacation experience!

Interestingly, they also sell water exclusively, and the containers are quite uniform.
