Less than a kilometre from the Beibu Gulf, in Yong'an Village of Shankou Town, Hepu, stands a remarkable piece of coastal heritage: Beihai Dashi Pavilion. Salt-laden sea winds blow straight into its timber frame. Along this coastline, military fortifications are military fortifications, lighthouses are lighthouses, and Mazu temples serve their own traditions. But this pavilion is something altogether different. It has lived several lives within the same wooden frame. Built in the Ming dynasty during the Chenghua era, it originally served as the drum tower of the Yong'an garrison. Standing at the centre of the village crossroads, it was used to sound orders, observe the coast, and warn against maritime attacks. Then the garrison system disappeared. The military settlement gradually became a fishing village. And the building changed with it. The upper level was transformed into a shrine dedicated to Guanyin, while the lower level remained completely open, without enclosing walls. Locals came to call it the “Four-Row Pavilion.” The remarkable thing is that the structure itself survived while its purpose completely changed. Military architecture became community architecture. A building once used to watch for enemies became a place where villagers gathered and worshipped. The same columns. The same beams. A completely different life. That kind of architectural continuity is exceptionally rare among China's surviving coastal heritage sites. With the help of a local caretaker, I was able to climb to the second floor and examine the structure up close. An old provincial heritage sign even describes it as having the appearance of a “Song-dynasty building.” Whatever the exact dating of the sign, the architecture itself is fascinating. The pavilion uses dense, durable local Guangxi timber, chosen for its resistance to humidity, decay, and the harsh coastal environment. Its structural system is remarkably elaborate: 36 columns. 72 tie beams. 108 secondary columns. And not a single nail or iron fitting holds it together. Everything depends on traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. The columns taper subtly upward and downward, creating the distinctive suo or spindle-shaped profile. Their stone bases carry carved lotus motifs, with full, rounded petals softened by centuries of weathering. 🌿 At the corners, the columns rise slightly toward the eaves, giving the roofline a gentle curve. Three levels of projecting brackets extend outward. The mixed column-and-beam framing system combines chuandou and tailiang techniques, while the exposed interior structure leaves the entire framework visible from below. One suspended column even appears to hover slightly above its stone foundation—a small but ingenious detail that helps accommodate moisture, settlement, and movement in a coastal environment. And this is where the pavilion becomes particularly intriguing. Although the building belongs structurally to the Ming dynasty, several details preserve the visual language of earlier Song–Yuan Lingnan architecture. The spindle-shaped columns. The carved lotus bases. The curved eaves. The open timber framework. They give the building an architectural appearance older than its documented construction date. Perhaps that is the most fascinating aspect of heritage architecture. A building is not always one date.
