Years ago, I visited Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park in Washington State, which introduced me to the wonder of petrified wood. I learned then that the largest concentration of it in North America was in Arizona, and it’s been on my bucket list ever since. I originally planned to visit during my 2023 New Year’s trip to New Mexico, but a snowstorm shut down the highway, forcing me to cancel my hotel and skip the park. Fast forward to April 2025, I finally added it back to my Arizona itinerary, making the anticipation even stronger. 🪵 Why is it called "Petrified Wood"? The most incredible part is that these trees from over 200 million years ago have literally turned into stone. You can still see: · 🌳 The original shape of the trunks · 🪵 Growth rings · Wood grain · Sometimes even the finest bark details But the moment you touch it, you realize it’s a heavy, solid rock. The park is split into North and South sections; we spent two days exploring them. 🌈 The Highlight: Painted Desert The northern section features the famous Painted Desert. Interestingly, this is the only national park intersected by the historic Route 66. Near the vintage car display at the end of the north loop, you’ll see the park road passing over the highway—a unique sight reminiscent of the wildlife overpasses in Banff. On the second day, we explored the southern sites: 1. Blue Mesa ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A total must-see. The blue-gray, purple, and white badlands and wavy strata feel like a miniature version of another planet. 2. Crystal Forest ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A high concentration of petrified wood, perfect for getting a close-up look at the details. 3. Giant Logs ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Home to some truly massive petrified tree trunks. 4. Rainbow Forest Museum Great for learning about the fossilization process and seeing prehistoric exhibits.
