Must-try Nyonya cuisine in Ipoh 🔥 Assam House, a culinary legend since 1991
#FebruaryDestinations2026
Some restaurants are simply "delicious," but others are family stories, the taste of a generation, and the continuation of culture.
Today, I want to seriously introduce this place—Assam House.
And the owner is my relative! Operating since 1991, in Ipoh, this is more than just a restaurant; it's a taste of memories for many.
Simply the best asain cuisine in town since 1991
🌿 A Peranakan flavor passed down from Malacca
The founder's mother, in her youth, worked as the personal cook for a high-ranking Baba official in Malacca, responsible for three meals a day. Decades of trust and experience honed her authentic Baba Nyonya culinary skills. After marriage, she returned to Ipoh and founded Assam House with her family in 1991. Initially, the menu was limited—curry fish head, stink bean squid, pan-fried assam prawns… Later, to refine the flavors, my uncle and family searched far and wide for new culinary delights, repeatedly improving the dishes, gradually developing them into the dozens of classic Nyonya dishes we know today. After the millennium, it even obtained halal certification, allowing more people to enjoy it with peace of mind.
Must-Order Signature Dishes 🔥
✦ Curry Assam (Grouper Head)
This is the soul of the dish. The tender fish meat is soaked in a rich and tangy curry assam sauce. Okra, tofu puffs, and tomatoes all absorb the broth. The sour, spicy, and fragrant flavors are layered upon layered. The first bite—it truly will leave you speechless for three seconds.
✦ Sambal Petai (Stir-fried Squid)
A paradise for those with a strong palate. The unique aroma of stink beans (Petai) paired with their secret sambal chili sauce, cooked to perfection, creates an explosion of spiciness. And—it's said to be Chow Yun-fat's favorite! 🔥
✦ Pandan Chicken (My Favorite)
Marinated chicken wrapped in pandan leaves and deep-fried at high temperature. The aroma bursts forth the moment you peel it open. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and juicy. A traditional Nyonya dish.
✦ Cendol Dessert (Must-Try)
✦ Dining Environment
Retro floor tiles, colorful stained-glass windows, and Nanyang elements. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time to Malacca.
Here, you're not just eating delicious food, but experiencing a whole culture.
