I would give five stars because the trip was AMAZING and our guide was delightful. However, the organization by the company Tanzania Specialist was quite weak and doesn’t deserve even four stars. Sara González arranged our trip and was very attentive up until we made the first payment. After that, it felt like we didn’t exist—emails went unanswered, and phone calls were ignored. Overall, it was a very expensive trip for such poor management. Fortunately, the safari itself was stunning. We went for our honeymoon, and our guide Amani was a wonderful discovery, both as a person and a guide. We managed to see all the animals—the big five, the big nine, and countless others. Amani took his time for us to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. His eyesight was excellent and doing the private safari was absolutely worth it as he continuously adapted to our schedule and needs. We saw animals up close, even more so than we had imagined. It was also crucial for us that he spoke Spanish. Most of the hotels were very impressive, although some were changed at the last minute, and the price unexpectedly increased by 4%. I highly recommend the Serengueti Sametu Camp by Karibu Camps & Lodges and the Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge; they are absolute dreams! The decoration, rooms, food—everything was fantastic. In summary, the trip itself deserves a ten-out-of-ten rating. It was a unique and unforgettable experience.

I joined a 4-day walking circuit (Olmoti → Empakaai → descent) out of Karatu; the Empakaai rim hike alone is 5 km out-and-back from the eastern ranger post, 2 hrs, 295 m descent to the lake shore and back, rim altitude 3,200 m. The moss is on the rim forest — Hagenia abyssinica and fig roots dripping at 8 a.m., the soda lake 300 m below holding flamingo specks. The rim track circles 32 km if you commit, but most slow travelers do the eastern segment to the descent notch and back. I spent 90 minutes at the notch watching the lake change from emerald to steel-blue as the cloud lifted. No fencing, no rail — the rim grass is slick, one step wrong and you slide into forest. Boots mandatory, poles helpful. Armed ranger stays 10 m behind you the whole time; that is the rule, not a suggestion. We had an amazing time exploring Tarangire National Park, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Erick met us at our hotel in Arusha and introduced us to our guide, Laurian. On day one at Tarangire National Park, we marveled at the Baobab trees, numerous elephants, and even lions. That evening, we stayed at Escarpment Luxury Lodge, our favorite accommodation of the trip, with great food, comfort, and a gorgeous setting. Days two and three were spent in the Serengeti, where we enjoyed stunning views and, thanks to Laurian’s exceptional guiding skills, watched a cheetah hunt unfold. However, Ngorongoro Crater was unquestionably the highlight. It’s one of the most breathtaking places we’ve visited, brimming with wildlife. We counted over 20 lions and finally saw rhinos! Taken around by Pysion in a punt boat as a family of 4 adults. His extensive knowledge and keen eye for wildlife were impressive, making him engaging to listen to throughout the trip around the lake. We spotted kingfishers, egrets, an African Fish Eagle, kites, and monitor lizards. It was a fantastic way to spend over two hours in the afternoon after arriving in Tanzania earlier that same morning.

We took a family safari with Herman, and the tour was entirely tailored to our preferences. Afterwards, we headed to Zanzibar. On a side note, all the accommodations were excellent. During the game drives, Herman went above and beyond to create the best experience for us. Once in the Serengeti, we even took a huge detour and were surprised by a lion family with their prey 😍. The three of us (my husband, our 16-year-old son, and I) went on an 8-day safari. Chris, our guide and driver, was excellent—very friendly, humorous, and knowledgeable. Watching them work hour after hour under the scorching equatorial sun, relying entirely on ancestral muscle memory rather than modern machinery, induces a powerful sense of awe and disorientation. It forces you to re-evaluate what true skill means, stripping away all reliance on technology to reveal pure, raw human craftsmanship at its absolute finest.

The immediate culture shock comes from their striking physical appearance and unwavering adherence to ancient customs: women wear heavy brass neck rings, walk with intricate facial scarification, and practice a complex, insular societal structure. Witnessing how they smelt scrap metal into delicate arrowheads and spear points using primitive bellows—right in the middle of the arid East African bush—is a breathtaking reminder of ancient industrial ingenuity that defies the modern age.

We spent four incredible days in the Karatu area with a perfect itinerary—no wasted time, yet no rushing either. Each day was dedicated to exploring a different park: Manyara, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Arusha, ensuring we didn’t miss any animal sightings. Our guide, Mr. Ebenezer, was highly professional and approachable, with in-depth knowledge of the region and excellent recommendations. He enhanced our trip with extras like visiting a coffee plantation to learn traditional coffee-making and experiencing a Masai village. Importantly, he avoided any sense of commercial interest, focusing on our comfort and safety throughout. Our accommodations at Eileen’s Inn and Pazuri Inn were remarkable, offering traditional architecture that harmonized beautifully with nature. It was our first visit to Tanzania and our first safari. Initially, we planned to do it only once, but we will definitely come back — and it will only be with Obama Safari. The whole experience was incredible. Thanks to Obama's expertise, we managed to see so much during our stay, simply remarkable. While other drivers avoided challenging routes, Obama’s experience allowed us to reach those places despite difficult roads. We were lucky to witness the migration of zebras and wildebeest, spotting lions, leopards, elephants, and cheetahs along the way. Aside from wildlife, we visited the Hadzabe bushmen, the Maasai tribe, and even a coffee plantation/roastery. The trip was filled with variety and immense fun. Coincidentally, my birthday fell during the safari, and that day turned out to be truly unforgettable: we saw a cheetah kill, followed by a delightful surprise at the lodge. The lodges Obama chose for us were amazing — the food was delicious, the views were breathtaking, and the overall experience was extraordinary. The service was exceptional and worth repeating. It was easily the most wonderful trip of our lives! A huge thank-you to Obama once again — we can't wait to meet again someday. #itinerarycheck Most people cram Ngorongoro Crater and skip Empakaai. Bad call. I drove from Karatu at 6:30 am, reached Nainokanoka gate by 8:00, paid 70.80 USD conservation entry (24-hour clock starts at gate stamp) plus 23.60 USD walking permit and 23.60 USD armed ranger fee per group. No cash—prepaid through operator or TANAPA card machine. From the gate it is 45 minutes on rough track to the rim trailhead where Maasai herders park their bicycles. The walk to the north rim is 3 km gentle downhill through tussock grass; then the rim itself stretches 7 km round if you go both sides. I only did the west rim to the descent point: 300 m down to the crater floor takes 40 minutes, steep switchbacks, pinkish soil. At the bottom, Empakaai Lake fills half the 6 km caldera and in January held maybe 2,000 flamingos. No vehicles allowed inside, which is the whole point. Key lessons: do not attempt rim-to-floor without ranger; buffalo trails cross the descent. Carry 3 L water—there is none below. I wore trail runners, slipped twice, would take mid boots next time. Maasai at Nainokanoka sell walking sticks for 5,000 TZS; buy one. Best light is 4–6 pm on the west wall. I camped at Nainokanoka with a cook for 110 USD total; cheaper to sleep in Karatu and drive early but you lose the dawn mist over Ol Doinyo Lengai across the rift. Is Empakaai better than the main Ngorongoro Crater? Quietly, yes—if you walk.
