We stayed at the Saga New Otani Hotel this time, and the experience was excellent! Our itinerary was mainly spread over two days, with the third day spent purely at the airport preparing for departure. Day 1: We landed at 10:30 AM and arrived at the hotel to drop off our luggage before 12:00 PM. We then visited nearby attractions such as Saga Castle Ruins and a shrine. For lunch, we ate near Saga Station, and in the afternoon, we took a train to Karatsu City. In the evening, we returned to Saga and went shopping and dining at You Me Town. Day 2: After having breakfast at a convenience store, we headed to Hizen-Kashima Station and took a bus to Yutoku Inari Shrine. We spent the afternoon exploring the shrine before returning to Saga, where we shopped and had dinner in the city center before heading back to the hotel.

Documents indicate that during the Edo period, offering red torii gates was a form of prayer and fulfillment, and this custom has been passed down ever since. We departed from Saga Station and took the JR train to Hizen Kashima Station. From there, we took a 20-minute bus to Yutoku Inari Station. The shrine is accessible via the approach to the shrine. During weekdays, there were few tourists, and most of the shops along the approach were closed. Upon entering the shrine, the vermilion-colored buildings caught our eye. The shrine grounds are extensive, and you can ascend the stairs or take the elevator to the main hall, the Honden, 18 meters above the ground. You can also continue up the path to the summit for breathtaking views of the mountains and sea. I was particularly impressed by the wooden structure of the Honden, nestled against the hillside. It resembled a replica of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. While not as majestic, the vermilion color was just as impressive! In Japan, there are many Inari shrines like the Tudigong Temple in Taiwan, but not many are as spectacular as this one. If you have already come to Kyushu for a trip, you might as well come here for a visit!

📅 Travel Itinerary Day 1: A drive from Fukuoka to Saga. First, we enjoyed a ninja show and activities at "Hizen Yumekaido Ninja Village," where even adults could relive their childhood. For lunch, we went to "Yokocho," a popular restaurant in Ureshino Onsen famous for its "Onsen Yudofu" (hot spring tofu). The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the Yudofu was exquisite, a must-try dish when visiting Ureshino. Afterwards, we stayed overnight at Ureshino Onsen and relaxed in the smooth, skin-beautifying hot spring water. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Takezaki crab, grilled over charcoal, was fragrant, packed with meat, and intensely sweet. We were able to fully enjoy the deliciousness of the ingredients. Eating while gazing at the sea was also very pleasant, and we spent a luxurious time in Saga. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Gohonen Temple is located on a towering red suspended stage, which looks a bit like Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto from a distance😯. The gorgeous carvings and lacquer art in the temple are unbeatable. It's very impressive at first glance! Walk to the back of the main temple and slowly walk up the steep stone-stepped mountain road, lined with endless red torii gates. 🌊⛩️ If you are afraid of being tired and inconvenient to climb the stairs, you can choose to take the glass view elevator next to the main temple (about 300 yen at a time, with small souvenirs), which is courteous enough - sooo suitable for elders or friends with limited mobility! The garden here is absolutely breathtaking! With its vermilion bridge, blooming hydrangeas, and lush moss, it perfectly captures the essence of wabi-sabi. ・Buaiso @ Tokyo → The former residence of businessman Jiro Shirasu. The garden is lush with greenery and even features a tranquil bamboo grove. ・Machida Peony Garden @ Tokyo It's not just peonies—cherry blossoms, azaleas, and other flowers bloom in full glory here. #winterescape Experience not to be missed! The Two Stars 4047 is a specialized JR Kyushu sightseeing train showcase the scenic West Kyushu coastline between Takeo Onsen and Nagasaki (morning route). Unlike the usual JR trains, this train features a pearl-white design, retrofitted train cars with warm, wooden interiors, a dedicated "Lounge 40" car, and panoramic views of the Ariake Sea! It makes specific stops for sightseeing, local culture, and photo opportunities, typically including Hizen-Hama, Tara, and Isahaya. It is designed as a scenic, slow-travel train, with Hizen-Hama offering a renowned, brief, in-station sake-tasting experience. Though it was winter, temperature range between 3 to 7 degrees celsius. With the sun out, it was a perfect time to step outside to enjoy the picturesque scenery and fresh air! Don’t forget to take your camera along each time the train makes a brief stop. The train focuses on coastal views, specifically the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. The interesting interior design of Lounge 40–Car 2 is a lounge with couches, a service counter, and bar-style seating, while the interior features wooden furniture, bamboo blinds, and artwork, giving it a cozy, luxurious feel. Passengers can pre-order specially curated bento boxes (like Saga beef) or buy some snacks and drinks onboard too! This is a pretty train offering a unique experience, I had great pleasure riding it. It was indeed a memorable experience! Although the train ride takes longer than the typical Shinkansen, if you’re heading to Nagasaki by train, consider the Two Stars train for a different experience. Note: The train operates only Friday through Monday, with the Morning Route (10:22 AM departure from Takeo-Onsen) traveling along the coast of the Ariake Sea. #January Destinations 2026 #4047 Twin Star Train I was very lucky to book the 4047 Twin Star Train during the three-day holiday in Japan. Since we bought the San'in-Sanyo-Kitakyushu Pass, we couldn't reserve seats before departure. The train ran from Takeo Onsen to Nagasaki, stopping at Hizen-Hamajuku, Tara Station, and Isahaya Station, where you could spend a little money to sample sake, ring the Koyo Bell, and even participate in a nori sushi-making activity on board. At the final stop, Nagasaki, you could take a streetcar to visit the Megane Bridge, the Catholic Church, and Glover Park. It was truly a very fulfilling day.

Yutoku Inari Shrine exudes a sense of grandeur while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. Early this morning, we leisurely walked along the approach path to the shrine. The vermilion gate stood out vividly under the sunlight, resembling the entrance to a serene mountain castle, welcoming every visitor who came to pay their respects. Passing through the gate, we were greeted by the lively atmosphere of the shrine's bustling shopping street. The air was filled with enticing aromas, and the shops offered a variety of unique items, from fox-shaped trinkets and traditional Japanese sweets to warm and fragrant snacks. Strolling and sampling the treats made the journey all the more enjoyable. Each shop had its own charm, reflecting the gentle daily life unique to the area around the shrine. After paying our respects at the main hall, we decided to venture higher, climbing the steps toward the inner sanctuary. Though the path was somewhat challenging, the occasional mountain breeze and the interplay of light and shadow through the trees made the ascent delightful. Upon reaching the inner sanctuary, the view suddenly opened up—below us lay the magnificent shrine complex, and in the distance, we could see the townscape of Kashima. The entire scene unfolded like a painted scroll. Standing quietly in the inner sanctuary, we clasped our hands in prayer once more, and the fatigue of the journey seemed to dissipate in that moment. Yutoku Inari Shrine is not just a place of worship; it is a spiritual walk that transitions from bustling activity to serene tranquility, from the plains to the heights. Before leaving, we returned to the shopping street to buy some snacks as souvenirs, allowing the beauty of the journey to linger a little longer.

The shrine is dedicated to the Inari deity, who is believed to oversee bountiful harvests, commercial prosperity, romantic fortune, and traffic safety. Perched on a hillside, the shrine offers a panoramic view of lush green mountains and traditional Japanese gardens, with seasonal landscapes that vary throughout the year: cherry blossoms in spring, verdant greenery in summer, autumn foliage, and plum blossoms in winter. It is undoubtedly a must-visit spot for a free-spirited trip to Saga. From the entrance of the approach, visitors can stroll through a bustling shopping street (selling souvenirs like amulets and yokan sweets) leading to the vermilion gate and main hall. After paying respects at the main hall, visitors can proceed to the inner shrine (located in the rear mountain area with a thousand torii gates along the hillside, requiring a 20-30 minute uphill climb). Don't miss trying the exclusive "Firecracker Yokan" on the shopping street in front of the shrine. Nearby Kashima City offers delicacies such as Saga beef barbecue, Yobuko squid sushi, or Takezaki crab. For lunch, the "Fox Feast" set meal in the temple town is highly recommended. To get there, take the JR Nagasaki Main Line limited express train to "Hizen-Kashima Station" (about 1.5 hours), then transfer to the Kashima Bus (Yutoku Line) for about 10 minutes to reach the shrine's front station. A one-way bus ticket costs approximately 330 yen. Opening hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, open year-round.
