Lamu Island, the main island of Lamu, is less than 100 kilometers from the Somali border. Legend has it that Zheng He's fleet once passed through this area. As the ship docked, it felt as if time had reversed. The diverse cultural imprints of Arabia, Persia, India, and Europe intertwined here, solidifying into an ancient scene. Some say Lamu is somewhat like Zanzibar—it is, to a certain extent, but not by much. Lamu possesses a more rustic, primal quality. Perhaps it's because donkeys are still the island's primary mode of transportation, or perhaps it's the ancient life traces layered and carved into the walls, that make the entire island feel primitive and authentic. During my four days in Lamu, the sun blazed down one moment, and torrential rain poured down the next. I wandered through the narrow alleys every day, often bumping into donkeys carrying goods. The island preserves many historical buildings, but only by going inside can you truly appreciate their uniqueness up close. I didn't have any particular plans for this place. I spent each day trying different restaurants, from touristy eateries to local eateries, and gradually learned to read Swahili menus—a small achievement, I suppose.

There are no cars on the island, and to reach it from the airport, you need to take a boat. About the old town: a charming, authentic place with its unique atmosphere, where the scents of blooming trees mix with earthy notes from passing donkeys. During the day, it is very quiet; occasionally, you might see women in Muslim attire, people praying right on the streets, observe the modest life of locals, and catch curious glances from children. There are many delightful shops with handmade local goods, and women sit right there at sewing machines.

From animal statues to traditional masks, everything is clearly priced, making them ideal souvenirs. _ A trip to Mombasa is like a journey through time, offering the wild beauty of Africa, the romance of the ocean, and the richness of history. Compared to Nairobi, Mombasa feels like a more compelling choice.
