The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya Buddha (Milefo), carved into the cliff of Mount Lingyun near the city of Leshan in Sichuan Province. It is one of the tallest sculptures in the world and, along with the adjacent Mount Emei, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. It stands 71 meters tall, with a head height of 14.7 meters, a shoulder width of 24 meters, a foot width of 8.5 meters, and an ear length of 7 meters, while the hair consists of 1,021 spiral curls. The statue is carved directly into the sheer red rock of Qixia Peak on Mount Lingyun, at the confluence of the Minjiang, Qingyi, and Dadu rivers. Depicting a seated Maitreya Buddha, the statue is a masterpiece of Tang Dynasty rock relief art. Construction began in 713 during the Tang Dynasty, initiated by the Chan Buddhist monk Hai Tong. The project took 90 years to complete, and by the time it was finished in 803, Hai Tong had already passed away. His two disciples, Zhangchou and Wei Gao, completed the project. According to legend, the statue was created to "calm the elements" and protect locals from floods and shipwrecks at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers. It is believed that the massive amount of rock excavated during construction fell into the river, acting as a breakwater and reducing the risk of accidents. Originally, the Buddha's body up to its head was sheltered by a 13-story wooden pavilion (the Great Image Pavilion, or Daxiangge), which was later destroyed. One of its key features is a complex drainage system built into the statue: hidden gutters and channels in the hair, collar, chest, and folds of the clothing carry away rainwater and protect the sculpture from dampness. This has helped preserve the site for over 1,200 years. Chinese experts conducted restoration work in 1962, 1990, and 2001. In 2018, the Leshan Giant Buddha Cultural Research Institute was established to coordinate scientific and restoration efforts. A full 3D scan of the statue was also performed. Locals still believe the statue reacts to events by changing its facial expressions, closing its eyes, etc. There is a legend of the "Weeping Buddha": according to lore, in the years following its completion, the area suffered from heavy rains and floods that damaged the Buddha's face. Locals believed the Buddha was crying over the people's suffering and the raging waters. In 2020, following severe flooding in Sichuan Province, the Buddha's feet were submerged. This terrified locals, who believe that if the water reaches the Buddha, the entire city will flood. Today, the Leshan Giant Buddha is not only a religious site but also a popular tourist destination. The area around the statue is officially known as the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, featuring not only the sculpture itself but also a network of trails, temples, and observation decks. You can view the statue from various angles: from the observation decks near its head or from the water on a sightseeing boat that sails right up to the cliff facing the Buddha. Leshan is a city in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, best known for the magnificent Leshan Giant Buddha, carved into a cliff at the confluence of the Minjiang, Qingyi, and Dadu rivers. 🇨🇳 Visiting China for the culture... ...and somehow coming home with a camera roll dominated by food. 🍜🥟🧋 Looking back at my first trip to China, I realised that some of my favourite memories happened around the dining table. This mini compilation isn't even close to everything we ate — there were far too many ✨comfort meals, snacks and supper stops that never made it into the video. Over the trip, we worked our way through steaming bowls of noodles, dumplings, baozi, wontons, hotpot, grilled meats, skewers, claypot dishes, fried snacks, milk tea, pastries, desserts, street food and more. Some places were on our must-visit list, while others were random discoveries that we stumbled upon while exploring. Every 3 hours: "What are we eating next?" What I enjoyed most was how every meal felt a little different. A bowl of noodles could taste completely different from one city to the next. The same ingredients could be prepared in entirely different ways depending on the region. Even something as simple as a late-night snack often turned into an unexpected food find. For all the history, architecture and attractions we visited, food ended up being one of the things that helped me connect with the culture the most. Every dish had a story behind it, whether it was a regional specialty, a family recipe or something locals have been eating for generations. Maybe that's why food is such a common comfort for so many people. Beyond the flavours, it's the memories attached to it — the conversations shared over a meal, the excitement of trying something new, and those moments when everyone at the table agrees they've ordered the right thing. If you're visiting Chengdu for a few days, the Leshan Buddha will almost certainly be on your itinerary. We decided to combine two of the region's main attractions—the Leshan Buddha and Mount Emei—so we stayed for a few days in Emei Mountain. In my opinion, this is the most convenient option: it's easy to get to both locations from here and doesn't waste time on back-and-forth travel. Of course, if you're short on time, it's quite possible to visit here in one day from Chengdu—high-speed trains make it easy. In this article, I'll tell you how we organized our trip, the route we chose, and what you need to know in advance to see the Leshan Buddha without the hassle and get the most out of your visit. 🚆 How to get to the Leshan Buddha? If you're traveling to Leshan from Chengdu, you have two main options. The first is to book a taxi through Didi. The trip costs around 200 yuan one-way and is suitable for those traveling in a group. We chose the second option, the high-speed train, and haven't regretted it for a second. A ticket costs around 25 yuan per person one-way, and the Chinese railway system is so convenient and well-organized that it's a pleasure to use. We purchased tickets in advance through Trip.com. As in many places in China, you don't need a separate ticket—your passport is your ticket. Therefore, I recommend always carrying it with you, as you'll need it for almost every leg of your journey. Trains depart from Chengdu East Station (Chengdudong). I recommend arriving at least 40 minutes before departure. The station is truly huge: first, you need to go through security, then find the right waiting room and your boarding gate. It's better to have a little extra time than to rush through thousands of passengers looking for your gate. We also purchased our tickets to the Buddha Park in advance through Trip.com, choosing the earliest time slot (7:30-10:30). This turned out to be a great decision – there weren't many people around, so we were able to enjoy the walk without lines or large crowds. Below, I'll share the approximate timing of our route and tell you what you should bring to make your visit as comfortable as possible. 🎒 What to bring: · Passport. The original is required, not a copy or photo. You can only board the train and enter the park with the original. · Comfortable shoes. Sneakers are best. The park is large, and there are lots and lots of stairs. · Bottle of water. This is especially true if you're traveling in the warmer months. · Power bank. A battery on your phone will be vital for navigation, taxis, taking photos, and making payments. 🕰️ Approximate route timing 07. 30 - 🚆 Arrival in Leshan Leshan has only one train station, so getting lost is easy. From there, take Didi directly to the North Gate. The ride takes about 15-20 minutes and costs about 20 yuan. 08. 10 - ⛩️North Gate Once you enter the park, don't rush straight to the Buddha. It's a very pleasant walk through alleys and an ancient temple complex. Most of the temples are open to the public, but photography is prohibited inside. If you walk at a leisurely pace, stopping by the temples and taking your time, the walk to the first observation deck will take about 45 minutes. Along the way, you'll find street food stalls, drink stalls, and restrooms, so you don't need to worry about the infrastructure. Please note: you will not be returning by this route. After visiting the Buddha, you exit through the East Gate, so explore all the interesting sights immediately and don't put them off until later. 09. 00 - 🙏First Encounter with the Buddha You will find yourself at the first observation deck overlooking the Buddha's head. This is where the stairs to the base of the Buddha begin. If there are no lines, the descent takes about 15 minutes, and I strongly recommend not skipping this part of the route. It is from the bottom that you truly appreciate the statue's scale. The only exception is if you have knee or heart problems or other health restrictions. After the descent, you will have to climb back up a rather steep staircase. 09:15 - ☸️At the Base of the Buddha Now it becomes clear why this place is considered one of the main symbols of China. Only standing at the base can you truly appreciate the statue's size and wonder: how did people manage to create such a structure over a thousand years ago? You can take photos and videos here without any restrictions. The area at the base is quite compact, so it quickly fills up with tourists by midday. Arriving late can spoil the experience a bit – it gets so crowded that it sometimes feels more like a subway at rush hour. In my opinion, 30 minutes is more than enough... unless, of course, you enjoy lingering in the majestic views and contemplating the eternal. 09. 45 - 🔝The Climb Back Now begins a small challenge. Of course, these aren't the legendary 999 steps on Tianmenshan, but you won't be able to relax either. The stairs are quite steep, and the climb is quite steep in places. On average, the climb up takes 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of people. At the top, you can reward yourself with a glass of freshly squeezed juice, which is sold at numerous stalls. 10. 10 - 🥾Way to the East Gate We continue our walk towards the East Gate. Along the way, we'll pass several more temples that are definitely worth a visit. Shortly before exiting, you'll cross a beautiful bridge over the river, built in traditional Chinese style. It's a great place for photos. Directly opposite the bridge is the entrance to a cave with another impressive Buddha statue. ⚠️ Please note: a ticket to this cave is purchased separately and costs about 30 yuan per person. In my opinion, it's definitely not worth skimping on – the place is truly worth a visit. 11. 30 - ⛩️East Gate Including the walk across the bridge and the cave visit, you'll arrive at the East Gate around 11:30. This is where they offer boat rides that approach the Buddha from the river. If you want to see the statue in its entirety from the water, this is a great option. Also, if you're unable to walk down to the Buddha's base for health reasons, a boat ride is a better alternative. We decided to abandon this idea and went to experience Leshan's cuisine. 12. 15–1:30 PM - 🥡Lunch My personal recommendation is Niuhong Hongqiaojiao Beef, a restaurant located near the city's waterfront. Here you can try almost all the main dishes of the local cuisine: dumplings, hot pot, the famous Leshan smoked pork, and many other Sichuan specialties. Everything was delicious, and the prices were a pleasant surprise. 1:30–2:15 PM - 🏞️Walk along the waterfront After lunch, don't rush back to the train station. Stroll along the city's riverfront, which offers a beautiful view of the confluence of the rivers. In good weather, you can even spot the Buddha statue in the distance. From here, it's also convenient to call DiDi to the train station and head back to Chengdu. We returned to Emei Mountain to climb the famous Mount Emei the next day. 🏁Results The Leshan Buddha is a truly remarkable sight worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. The statue's scale is impossible to convey in photographs, and standing at its base, you can't help but wonder how people managed to create such a majestic structure over a thousand years ago. However, my main advice is not to limit yourself to Leshan. If possible, set aside 2-3 days and combine a visit to the Buddha with a trip to Mount Emei, as we did. 🌿We visited both the Giant Buddha and the caves. I wouldn't call it a "leisurely" stroll, but we spent about 6 hours here.🌿 We took the high-speed train to Leshan Station (~50 mins on the way) and then caught a taxi straight to the entrance. We arrived around 12:30 PM. It wasn't crowded at all, and there were zero lines. The weather was overcast, but the temperature was nice and comfortable. 💧 Be prepared for some uncomfortable humidity, though—definitely bring bottled water with you. We bought combo tickets for both parks plus the shuttle bus right away. (We only used the shuttle once to get to the main entrance; after that, we couldn't find the stops and just decided to give up.) 175 RMB per person at the ticket window for everything. The stairs by the Buddha didn't seem too exhausting. You can easily find food and water inside, and the prices are affordable. 🗺️ Our Route: We hit up the Giant Buddha first -> then the caves (the entrance is right by the path coming up from the Buddha) -> and explored the rest of the area after that. I was honestly surprised to find other beautiful Buddha statues around the park. I especially loved the one with the grand staircase. The Reclining Buddha is located by the exit near the caves—you just have to walk to the bridge and look up at the mountain. The caves actually blew me away even more than the main 70-meter Giant Buddha. Seriously, don't skip them! We recently visited the Dazu Rock Carvings and Longmen Grottoes, so our expectations were pretty low, but these caves definitely gave us a huge "wow" factor.

Some of the main attractions of the park include: the Giant Buddha (乐山大佛), the Cave of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin (千手观音窟乐山), the Cave of Ten Thousand Buddhas (33米洞中坐佛), the 51-meter Medicine Buddha (51米药师佛), the Demon Subduing Pool (降妖池), and the 170-meter Sleeping Buddha (170米长卧佛). Mount Lingyun, home to the Leshan Giant Buddha, has long been revered as a sacred Buddhist site. According to ancient Tang Dynasty legends, the mountain's nine peaks were once home to nine grand monasteries and thousands of caves filled with carved deities. This area was a true spiritual epicenter of Sichuan. Legend has it that local monks experienced a vision: the Buddha himself appeared and revealed that the mountain slopes harbored hidden heavenly powers. If the cliffs were adorned with numerous images of enlightened beings, the mountain—alongside the Leshan Giant Buddha—would serve as a protective shield for the entire Leshan region, warding off floods, disasters, and misfortune. The monks immediately began carving sculptures, filling the caves with figures of Guanyin, Buddhas, and celestial warriors. The park's most iconic legendary sculpture is the massive 170-meter Reclining Buddha. It is believed to represent the Buddha at rest, watching over the entire mountain range. Adjacent to it lies the Cave of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, a symbol of boundless compassion, which is said to grant the heartfelt wishes of its visitors. The Leshan Dafo (Leshan Giant Buddha) dates back to the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century and was created to tame the local rivers. In ancient times, three turbulent rivers converged at the foot of Mount Lingyun. The turbulent waters at this confluence created treacherous whirlpools, and violent storms frequently sank the boats of merchants and fishermen, causing constant hardship for the local people. A compassionate monk named Haitong lived in the area. Deeply moved by the people's suffering, he resolved to find a way to calm the raging waters. The monk realized that if a colossal statue of Maitreya Buddha were carved into the cliffside, its divine presence would pacify the rivers and protect travelers. Funding such a monumental project required a vast amount of money. Haitong traveled far and wide, preaching and collecting donations. He spent many years gathering funds, denying himself all but the barest necessities in food and clothing. When local corrupt officials learned of the amassed wealth, they sought to confiscate it. They confronted the monk, demanding all the gold and silver. Haitong refused, stating that the money was exclusively meant for the Buddha and the salvation of the people. To demonstrate his unwavering resolve, the monk gouged out his own eyes and presented them to the officials on a platter—proving he feared no suffering for a righteous cause. Terrified, the officials backed off and never troubled him again. Construction of the giant statue began in 713 AD. Although Monk Haitong did not live to see its completion, his disciples carried on his legacy. For nearly 90 years, generations of artisans carved the magnificent figure directly into the mountain's rock face. Upon completion, the river waters miraculously grew calmer, and the deadly whirlpools practically vanished. The people believed that the Buddha was truly protecting them. Ever since, the immense 71-meter Leshan Dafo has gazed over the confluence of the rivers as the region's eternal guardian. Later on, the Oriental Buddha Park was constructed nearby, enriching this sacred sanctuary with even more Buddhist sculptures. Locals believe that these two great symbols—the ancient seated Leshan Dafo and the park's Reclining Buddha—combine to create a powerful spiritual field, blessing everyone who visits with pure intentions with peace and good fortune. 📝 Visiting Tips: To see everything, plan to spend a full day here from morning until evening. I recommend starting your morning at the Oriental Buddha Park (东方佛都) by entering through the Oriental Buddha Park Ticket Office (东方佛都-检票处), then making your way toward the Giant Buddha Bay. Dujiangyan Day Trip A day outside the city brought a completely different pace. We began at Yangtianwo Square before heading to Dujiangyan Panda Valley. The route continued through Zhongshuge at Sunac Mall, Wenmiaoshan Street, Guanxian Ancient City, and the Ming Dynasty Wall remnants. The day ended at Nanqiao Bridge, where the river lights and reflections created the glowing “Blue Tears” effect. Modern Chengdu & Night Energy Another day focused on Chengdu’s more urban side. Another day brought us through Chengdu People’s Park, Kuanzhai Alleys, Kuixinglou Street, Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum, and Fuqin Night Market—each stop showing a different layer of local life, from calm teahouse culture to busy evening food streets. Leshan Day Trip A highlight outside Chengdu was Leshan. The Giant Buddha was the main focus, paired with a stop at Suji Ancient Town.
