Looking for an affordable way to travel from the UK back to mainland Europe? We travelled from London to Lille by bus and ferry, and what we expected to be a long and exhausting journey turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable travel day. The main reason we chose this option was the price. We paid approximately US$65 / €56 for 2 people in June 2026 (Exchange rates vary, so this is just a reference.) And for that price, we were very happy with the experience. 🚌 London → Ferry Port The first part of the journey was only around 2.5 hours, which went by surprisingly quickly. We then stopped for immigration before boarding the ferry. And this was probably the biggest surprise of the whole journey: It was incredibly easy. There was no long queue, no stressful questioning and no complicated process for us. We went through immigration smoothly and were soon back on the bus. ⛴️ The ferry Then came the part we weren’t expecting to enjoy so much. The ferry crossing took around 1.5 hours, and instead of spending that entire time sitting on a bus, we were free to get off and explore the ferry. There are several decks with plenty of space to walk around, a restaurant and a café, seating areas and beautiful views of the sea. You can even get some work done, there are tables with power outlets, and the internet connection worked well for us. And yes… 😂 There was even a casino! Travelling with a pet? There is also a dedicated pet area, which makes the crossing more comfortable for travellers bringing their furry companions. But our favourite part was definitely the outdoor deck. Being able to step outside, feel the sea air and simply watch the English Channel while travelling to France made the journey feel much more like an experience than just transportation. 🌊 ⏰ Back to the bus About 15 minutes before arriving in France, an announcement lets passengers know that it’s time to return to the bus. Once we arrived in Calais, we had another journey of around 1 hour and 15 minutes before reaching Lille. From Lille, we continued on to Brussels, but the city is also well connected to other major destinations in France and Europe by train and bus. 💡 Why we’d recommend it We started the journey expecting: 🥱 Long + tiring + uncomfortable And ended up thinking: 🌊 “Wait… we’re already here?” The combination of bus + ferry actually breaks up the journey really nicely. Instead of sitting in the same seat for hours, you get time to walk around, eat, work, enjoy the sea views and stretch your legs. For us, it was a very affordable and surprisingly pleasant way to leave the UK and return to mainland Europe. If you’re travelling from London and don’t mind spending a little longer on the road, we’d definitely consider this option again. Have you ever travelled between the UK and mainland Europe by ferry? Would you choose this over flying? 🚌⛴️👇

🇫🇷 LANDING AT CDG PARIS SOON? Avoid these rookie mistakes before leaving the terminal! ✈️ So you’ve touched down at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and you’re ready to crush your Paris adventure. 🚀 Before you get lost in that Parisian magic (and maybe a few croissants 🥐), here’s your ultra-handy guide to getting from CDG to central Paris—without the tourist fails. 🚆 1. RER B — BEST BUDGET OPTION Route: CDG → Gare du Nord → Châtelet–Les Halles → Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame ⏱️ Time: About 25–40 min (depends on type of train) 💶 Price: Around €13 ⭐ Why you’ll love it: Super fast, frequent, and super easy for getting right into Paris city center. ⚡ Hack! Check the train screens—Not all RER B trains stop at the same stations! Look for direct services into the city. Choosing the right train can save you 10–15 minutes versus the ones that stop more often in the suburbs. 👀 Pro Tip: Watch your bags—keep them in front of you, especially during busy hours or when the train gets packed at stations like Gare du Nord. Don’t flash your phone or valuables near the doors—Paris has vibes, but it also has pickpockets! 📱 Beat the Queues: Buy your ticket with the Île-de-France Mobilités app or Bonjour RATP app. Get your RER ticket right on your phone/wallet (yep, it works with most devices), and breeze past those mega-long lines at the airport machines. 🚌 2. ROISSYBUS Route: CDG → Opéra (central Paris) ⏱️ Time: ~45–75 min (depends on traffic!) 💶 Cost: About €13–16 👍 When to use it: Perfect if your hotel’s near Opéra—just hop off and you’re there. 🚌 3. REGULAR PUBLIC BUS If you’re staying in certain Paris suburbs or local ‘hoods, a regular city bus can get you closer. 💶 Even cheaper than RER B or RoissyBus! ⏱️ Usually slower, but it could be handy for outer neighborhoods. 🚆 4. CDGVAL — AIRPORT SHUTTLE (Totally FREE!) Use CDGVAL to move between different CDG terminals and to reach the airport’s main transport hubs. ⚠️ Does NOT go into central Paris—it’s for getting around the airport only! 🚄 5. TGV — LEAVE CDG FOR ANOTHER CITY Trains depart from “Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV” station (Level 2, Terminal 2). Hit up cities like Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg, Marseille, or Bordeaux straight from the airport—no trip into Paris required! 🚕 TRAVELING WITH FAMILY OR LOTS OF LUGGAGE? Go official or go home! Take an official Paris airport taxi: ➡️ To the Right Bank: About €56 (flat rate) ➡️ To the Left Bank: About €65 (flat rate) Where? Head outside for the official taxi rank. Ignore any random offers in the terminal—they’re not worth the risk. 🏆 TL;DR: Quick Choices 💰 Cheapest & fast: RER B ⚡ Fast (to city center): RER B 🚌 Hotel/Opéra zone: RoissyBus 👨👩👧👦 Family & baggage mountain: Official Taxi 🚄 Leaving Paris for another French city: TGV 📝 Save this cheat sheet before your Paris touchdown! Planning more Paris moves? Check trip.com for deals on hotels, attractions, and the smoothest trip ever. Paris CDG airport info: Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) 95700 Roissy-en-France, France Major rail & bus connections on Level 2, Terminal 2 Official Taxis: Follow signage to Taxi zone outside Arrivals Bon voyage! ✨ #ParisAirport #ParisTransport #FranceTravel #ParisTips #EuropeTravel

I’d call this the best flight itinerary to Western Europe!! Many of my friends/relatives did Western Europe by flying into London and out of Paris, coz these are usually the cheapest flight combo one can get. Yet if one desires to visit Scotland, the best itinerary would be to fly into Edinburgh, then train to London and to Netherlands/Belgium etc by high speed train—otherwise there is almost bound to be some waste of money/time. But a flight to Edinburgh is usually much more expensive than to London. Now, with some Trip.com, it’s made possible! 【Main itinerary】 · Kuala Lumpur ✈️ Doha (by MAS); Doha ✈️ Edinburgh (by Qatar) · Paris ✈️ Kuala Lumpur (by MAS) · Kuala Lumpur ✈️ Medan (by MAS)* 📅 Nov to early Dec; from 2 to 4 weeks Note 1: This is a lovely combo of MAS (direct flight+good food) and Qatar (world #1 airlines). Note 2: The key travel hack is to throw in the last leg (*KL-Medan*), without which the airfare would rise significantly. My fav destinations: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Edinburgh/Isle of Skye 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 London/Oxford/Cambridge 🇳🇱 Amsterdam/Antwerp 🇧🇪 Bruges/Ghent 🇫🇷 Lille/Paris #cheapflightdeals #travel2026 #travel #uk #uktrip #france #malaysia #singapore

Flea markets in France are more than just shopping; they are an entire culture, complete with haggling, unexpected finds, lively conversations, and a special vibe. I’ve rounded up the 5 best markets in the country—from the legendary Parisian spots to the massive fairs in Lille and the South of France—so you can experience this firsthand. 1. Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen 📍 110–140 Rue des Rosiers, 93400 Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, France 🕒 Hours of Operation: · Saturday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM · Sunday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM · Monday: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM (partially open) Insider Tips: · The best time to go is Saturday or Sunday morning (fewer crowds, better selection). · Bring cash—not all vendors accept cards. · Take your time: the market is huge, so set aside at least 3–4 hours. · Haggling is welcome, especially if you're buying multiple items. · My personal favorite: I have vendor friends here I've known for years, and I never leave empty-handed! 👍 2. Braderie de Lille 📍 Lille City Center, France 🕒 Hours of Operation: · Held once a year (usually the first weekend of September) · Saturday: from morning until late at night · Sunday: until the evening Insider Tips: · Plan your trip well in advance—this is a massive event, and hotels book up quickly. · Arrive early in the morning to score rare finds. · Be sure to try the traditional mussels with French fries (moules-frites)—it's part of the experience! · Comfortable shoes are a must-have: you'll be doing a lot of walking. · This market is a major event for all vintage and antique lovers! Collectors flock here from all over Europe. 3. Les Puces du Canal 📍 5 Rue Eugène Pottier, 69100 Villeurbanne, France 🕒 Hours of Operation: · Thursday: 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM · Saturday, Sunday: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM Insider Tips: · It’s best to visit on weekends when more vendors are set up. · Mornings are the ideal time for antique hunting. · You can negotiate prices, especially with private sellers. · Bring a tote bag or a rolling suitcase—your finds might be bulky. 4. Marché aux Puces de la Porte de Vanves 📍 Avenue Georges Lafenestre & Avenue Marc Sangnier, 75014 Paris, France 🕒 Hours of Operation: · Saturday: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM · Sunday: 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM Insider Tips: · One of the best markets for an early visit (from 7:00–8:00 AM). · It's easy to find affordable vintage items here—prices are generally lower than at Saint-Ouen. · A great spot to hunt for small treasures and gifts. · A relaxed atmosphere—perfect for unhurried shopping. · You might even bump into the popular Russian-speaking blogger Grey Wiese or fashion historian Alexandre Vassiliev here. 5. Marché aux Puces de Nice 📍 Rue Robilante / Place Robilante, 06300 Nice, France 🕒 Hours of Operation: · Monday: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM · (Antique market, held regularly once a week) Insider Tips: · The best time to visit is the morning, especially on weekends. · On hot days, arrive early—it gets crowded by lunchtime. · You can find stylish home décor with a distinct "Southern France" flair. · Combine your visit with a stroll through the Old Town of Nice; the market is right nearby. · Some vintage pieces are sold significantly cheaper here than at the Parisian markets. For example, a popular butter press was bought here for just 25€, compared to the minimum price of 50€ at Porte de Saint-Ouen. Every flea market in France has its own story, atmosphere, and rhythm. Some are massive city-wide festivals, others offer a quiet hunt for rare finds, and some are absolute paradises for antique connoisseurs. Whether you're looking for a unique souvenir, a piece of home décor, or just a spark of inspiration, France's flea markets will give you far more than just a shopping trip. They offer a chance to touch history, experience true style, and take home a little piece of French charm. The key is not to rush, look closely, and be open to unexpected discoveries. That's exactly what makes these journeys truly special.

The cobblestone streets, old Flemish buildings, and charming cafés make this historic part of Lille feel so special. The whole area is perfect for wandering around, especially with the autumn leaves adding a warm glow to the city. Best of all, just walking around is free, and there’s so much to discover at every turn! The Grand Place is right nearby, and from there, I visited the Notre-Dame de la Treille Cathedral—free to enter and a true masterpiece of modern Gothic architecture. For a little treat, I recommend stopping by Meert, the famous pâtisserie known for its waffles 🧇. And if you love art, the Palais des Beaux-Arts is just a short walk away and costs around €7 to enter. Vieux-Lille in autumn is absolutely magical, with the cool air, the cozy vibe, and so much history to soak in. #VieuxLille #AutumnVibes #FrenchGetaway #ExploreLille #FlemishArchitecture #WeekendInLille

🌧️ Stumbled into St. Pancras International Station on a rainy day and was absolutely blown away! This building, known as the Cathedral of the Railways, is truly incredible 😭! The Victorian Gothic red brick facade + the most advanced 19th-century steel roof is a perfect blend of Industrial Revolution and medieval aesthetics ✨ 🏰 **Two Victorian ambitions layered together** The rear section features a massive single-span iron arch roof designed by engineer William Henry Barlow, spanning about 74.8 meters—it was the largest in the world when built! No support columns are needed in the middle of the platforms, allowing trains and passengers to move freely. This engineering is just mind-blowing 🚀 The eye-catching red brick facade at the front was originally the Midland Grand Hotel, designed by George Gilbert Scott, and is now the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel. Spires, colorful masonry, arched windows, steep roofs... it's pure High Victorian Gothic style, and it's gorgeously over-the-top! 📖 **Harry Potter vibes in full effect** As one of the filming locations for Harry Potter, this place really has a magical aura! Walking through the station hall, looking at the retro arched roof and classical details, it feels like you could see the entrance to Platform 9¾ at any second 🪄 📌 **Practical information** 📍 Address: Euston Rd, London N1C 4QP, UK 🚄 This is the only terminal for Eurostar in the UK, with direct trains to Paris, Brussels, Lille, and more! 🚇 Connected to the King's Cross St. Pancras Underground station at the south end, making it super convenient to get around 💡 **Nearby attractions** · West: Midland Road + The British Library · East: Pancras Road → King's Cross Station is right across the street · North: King's Cross Central 🌂 The station has a unique charm on a rainy day. The red bricks look even deeper when soaked by the rain, and the photos you take will have a cinematic feel! I recommend wearing light-colored clothing; it goes perfectly with the deep red brick walls~

This route is perfect for a leisurely stroll. It's 4 km long and takes 45 mins to walk normally, but we took our time and spent the whole day—the kids had fun, and the adults felt relaxed. The total distance is about 3.8 km, and a normal walk takes about 45 mins. If you want to take photos and browse shops along the way, setting aside half a day is more comfortable. 🗺️ Route: Paris Opera House → Place Vendôme → Champs-Élysées → Arc de Triomphe → Eiffel Tower Stop 1 📍 Paris Opera House Address: Pl. de l'Opéra, 75009 Paris Open 10:00 AM–6:00 PM. At the Paris Opera House, first admire the magnificent exterior of the Palais Garnier, then head inside to see the Baroque-style decor and the famous marble grand staircase. There are exhibitions of various costumes inside. Galeries Lafayette is right behind it; if you want to shop, you can stop by on your way. Stop 2 📍 Place Vendôme It's about a 10-min walk from the Opera House. Place Vendôme (optional detour): Walking from the Opera House toward Place de la Concorde, you will pass by Place Vendôme. It's not a mandatory stop on the main route, but it's more interesting than just rushing through. Stop 3 📍 Champs-Élysées The Champs-Élysées section is the core of the entire route. The avenue is long; it looks like the Arc de Triomphe is right in front of you, but it's actually quite a walk. Stroll and browse the dazzling array of brand window displays, Moulin Rouge advertisements, and the "old money" style of the luxury hotel entrances. Take a break at a historic cafe, try authentic macarons and various cakes, and experience the Parisian vibe ☕ The street near the Arc de Triomphe has a park, which is perfect for a relaxing walk 🌿 Stop 4 📍 Arc de Triomphe Address: Pl. Charles de Gaulle, 75008 Paris The Arc de Triomphe is located in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, where twelve avenues radiate outward. If you want to see the Paris skyline and a panoramic view of the Champs-Élysées, you can climb to the top. I bet the view from up there is unbeatable, with the entire Champs-Élysées in sight. If you like that sort of thing, you definitely have to go up! 👀 👣 Recommended leisurely pace: Morning: Opera House + Place Vendôme. Noon: Find a place on the Champs-Élysées for lunch. Afternoon: Stroll slowly to the Arc de Triomphe. Before sunset: Arrive at the Eiffel Tower. If you're tired, you can take the metro. There are Seine River cruises right next to the Eiffel Tower, and you don't need to buy tickets in advance. 💡 Tips: The traffic in front of the Arc de Triomphe is very heavy. It is recommended to keep an eye on your children so they don't run around, and use the underground passage to cross the street. If you don't want to walk, you can take the RER A: Auber → Charles de Gaulle–Étoile, 11 mins, €3–5 If you're traveling with kids, take it slow, and if you get tired, just sit at a sidewalk cafe. The romance of Paris is all about taking your time 😉

I am planning a Senior Inter-Rail Trip for my next big adventure and there are some marvellous museums and Gothic Cathedrals to visit around Lille, my first stop over for a few days. I plan to buy a culture pass so I can use public transport and free entry into the museums and Gothic Cathedrals, following in the footsteps of Matisse, Monet and the impressionists. Yes, I can absolutely combine Arras, Douai and Lens into one incredible, action-packed regional day trip. Because all three cities sit along interconnected lines of the regional network I can ride from one to the next in a perfect loop. By scheduling my transfers smoothly, I will comfortably hit my major targets: the underground war tunnels in Arras the world-class art museum in Lens and the historic belfry in Douai. To get the most out of my day trip from Lille I have a highly optimised, stress-free route map for my day trip. 🚆08:30 – 09:05 Train from Lille Flandres to Arras. Take a direct morning train (approx. 35 mins). 🏛️09:15 – 12:00 Explore Arras. Head straight to the Carrière Wellington (Wellington Quarry) to use my City Pass for free admission. Afterward, I take a brisk stroll through the stunning baroque Grand Place and grab a coffee and make a few sketches at the Gothic Cathedrals. 🚆12:15 – 12:30 | Train from Arras to Lens. Hop on an hourly direct train—it takes just 11 to 15 minutes to jump between these two cities. 🏛️12:30 – 15:30 | Explore Lens. Grab a quick lunch near the station, then I take the dedicated, free pedestrian path straight to the spectacular Louvre-Lens museum park. Flash my City Pass at the ticket counter to receive my reduced admission rate for the temporary exhibitions (the breathtaking main Gallery of Time is always free!). I can take a chill time with a drink and some quick sketching before heading to the station. 🚆15:45 – 16:15 Train from Lens to Douai Board the direct afternoon train connecting the two towns (approx. 30 mins). On the train I can check out my sketching and look through my postcards. 🏛️16:15 – 18:30 Explore Douai and Walk into the town center to admire the dramatic architecture. Spend your time marvelling at the towering UNESCO-listed Belfry of Douai or relaxing along the scenic scarpe canals. Time for some quick sketching and a bite to eat. 🚆18:45 – 19:15 | Train from Douai to Lille Flandres, Wrapping up my loop with a direct evening train. It is a lightning-fast 20 to 25-minute ride back to where you started, leaving you plenty of time for dinner back in Lille. I’m looking forward to trying out my itinerary. What do you think? Have you visited any of the museums and Gothic Cathedrals? Any tips or suggestions you can give me? #travel #museums #thingstodo

If you like hunting through car boot sales/ thrift stores/ charity shops / flea markets for that perfect quirky find, then put the annual Braderie de Lille at the top of your "to do" list! The entire city turns into a street market, with people selling the stuff that's cluttering up their house (some skis ... and a shovel...), their old children's toys to professional stall holders selling every kind of clock you can imagine; motoring bric-a-brac; old furniture ... the high street shops join in: French department store Printemps has a Braderie sale. And it's also a huge street party: everyone eats huge amounts of moules-frites (mussels with chips) ... there's brass bands playing. Nightlife in Lille is already a very lively (100,000 students in Lille see to that!) but it gets even more fun during the Braderie! Put a note in your diary for the first weekend in September, and bring an extra empty suitcase!
