This small city in southern Ningxia holds one of China’s top 10 grottoes, the largest Danxia landform group in northern China, and the last mountain the Red Army crossed during the Long March—any one of these alone would be a bragging point for other cities. But here, they’re all packed together, and the city keeps it low-key like a quiet gem. 🗿 Xumishan | Grottoes 100 years older than Dunhuang, I’m in awe Xumishan grottoes are hidden on the Danxia cliffs on the northern slope of Liupan Mountain, 55 km northwest of Guyuan city center. Tickets cost 60 yuan including the museum. Shuttle bus round trip is 20 yuan. Open 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM in summer. There are 162 caves spread across 8 peaks, with over 500 statues dating from the Northern Wei to the Ming and Qing dynasties. When I stood in Cave 5 of the Great Buddha Hall looking up at the 20.6-meter Maitreya Buddha, my neck got sore but I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Shuttle bus round trip costs 30 yuan. The 2.5 km Red Army trail features 18 miniature displays along the way, laying out the major events of the Long March. I walked the whole trail and lingered at the Poetry Platform—“The sky is high and clouds are light, watching the southbound wild geese disappear.” Standing at that altitude and spot, you really understand why Chairman Mao wrote those lines. It’s best to arrive before 9 AM when it’s less crowded. The morning light on the memorial square creates especially photogenic shadows. 🏛️ Guyuan Museum | Free but packed with treasures A national first-class museum, the “Millennium Guyuan · Silk Road Splendor” general history exhibition is free.
