Lucca travel guide and discussion

Honestly? Yes — but I wouldn’t spend a whole week there. 😂 Pisa is perfect for a half-day or 24-hour stop, especially if you’re travelling around Tuscany or flying in/out of Pisa Airport. Here’s how I’d spend my time 👇 🗼 1. START AT THE LEANING TOWER Head straight to Piazza dei Miracoli and see the famous Leaning Tower, Cathedral and Baptistery. 📸 2. GET THE CLASSIC PHOTO Yes, it’s touristy… but you have to do it 😂 Find a quieter spot around the square and get creative with the classic “holding up the tower” photo. 🚶♀️ 3. WALK BEYOND THE TOURIST AREA This is where Pisa surprised me. Wander away from the tower and explore the quieter streets, riverside and historic centre. 🍝 4. STOP FOR PROPER ITALIAN FOOD Skip the restaurants directly around the tower and walk further into the city. You’ll find much better options and generally better value. 🌅 5. WALK ALONG THE ARNO The riverside is especially pretty around golden hour and gives you a completely different view of Pisa. ✈️ 6. USE IT AS A BASE Pisa is also incredibly convenient for exploring Tuscany and is a great starting point for trips to Florence, Lucca, Cinque Terre and beyond. 💡 MY BIGGEST TIP Don’t make the mistake of thinking the Leaning Tower is ALL there is to Pisa. The tower is obviously the star attraction, but give yourself a few hours to actually wander around the city. ⏰ My recommendation: ½ day = enough for the highlights 1 day = perfect if you want to explore properly Several days = I’d choose Florence or another Tuscan base instead So… would you visit Pisa, or skip it? 🇮🇹👇 SAVE THIS FOR YOUR ITALY TRIP ✈️ #pisa #pisaitaly #italytravel #visititaly #italytrip #tuscany #traveleurope #europeantravel #italybucketlist #traveltips #travelguide #wanderlust #travelinspiration #solotravel #bucketlisttravel

When visiting Tuscany, most people immediately think of Florence or Pisa. But step into the ancient city of Lucca, and you'll discover that this unassuming little town hides a magnificent church that will make you linger. With a history spanning nearly 900 years, Lucca Cathedral's most captivating feature is its intricately carved, multi-tiered Romanesque facade. Rows of elegant arcades and delicate stone carvings gleam white in the sunlight. As you look up, every tier reveals different details, making it feel like a colossal piece of art. You won't find the hustle and bustle of popular tourist traps or overwhelming crowds here. Instead, there is a profound sense of tranquility, allowing you to take your time admiring the architectural beauty and soaking in the relaxed pace of this historic city. If you have the time, it's highly recommended to step inside the cathedral. Beyond its solemn atmosphere, it houses precious religious artworks, making this cathedral not just a spiritual center, but a vital symbol of Lucca's history and culture.

Tuscany isn't just vineyards and rolling hills. It's cobbled towns that you wander, linger in, and easily fall in love with. > Volterra for its etruscan history and dramatic countryside views > San Gimignano for its iconic tower skyline > Montepulciano for its grand streets and hidden wine cellars > Pienza for its picture perfect setting and pecorino, of course! > Cortona for its elevated views and soulful streets > Colle di Val d'Elsa for the way its medieval upper town meets crystal-making heritage > Lucca for its elegant walls, bikeable ramparts, timeless charm > Arezzo because it is so authentic, artistic, and wonderfully local > Pitigliano for its unique town carved straight into the rock > Siena for its gothic beauty and one of Italy's greatest piazzas Which one are you adding to your Tuscany route? #TuscanyTravel #VisitTuscany #ItalianTowns #Borghiltaliani

When I think of Pisa, the first image that comes to mind is the iconic Leaning Tower standing proudly against the Tuscan sky. But after visiting, I realised that Pisa is much more than just a famous photo spot — it is a charming city filled with history, beautiful architecture and a relaxed Italian atmosphere. 🇮🇹 My Experience My first stop was Piazza dei Miracoli, the famous Square of Miracles. The sight of the white marble monuments surrounded by a huge green lawn was even more beautiful in person. The Leaning Tower naturally steals the spotlight, but the nearby Cathedral, Baptistery and Camposanto create an incredible architectural ensemble. Together, these monuments form the UNESCO-listed Piazza del Duomo. Of course, I couldn't resist taking the classic “holding up the tower” photo! 📸 🏛️ The Leaning Tower of Pisa The Leaning Tower began construction in 1173 as the cathedral's bell tower. Its famous tilt appeared during construction because of problems with the ground beneath the foundations, eventually turning what was once an architectural challenge into one of Italy's most recognisable landmarks. If you have the chance to go inside, climbing the spiral staircase offers a completely different perspective of Piazza dei Miracoli and the surrounding city. ⛪ More Than Just the Tower Take your time to admire Pisa Cathedral, the Baptistery of St. John and Camposanto Monumentale. The details are incredible — marble façades, arches, columns, sculptures and centuries-old artworks. The Baptistery is also known for its remarkable acoustics. 🚶 Explore Beyond Piazza dei Miracoli After seeing the famous landmarks, I recommend walking towards the historic centre. Stroll along the Arno River, explore quiet streets, discover historic buildings and stop at a small café for an espresso or gelato. Pisa is also a lively university city, so away from the main tourist attractions, you can experience a more relaxed and local side of Tuscany. 📸 Best Photo Moments ✨ The classic Leaning Tower perspective
✨ Piazza dei Miracoli at golden hour
✨ Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery
✨ Walking along the Arno River
✨ Colourful streets around the historic centre
✨ A coffee or gelato break in a little Italian café 💡 Travel Tips · Start your visit early for a more peaceful experience.
· Wear comfortable shoes — walking is the best way to discover the city.
· Don't rush after seeing the Leaning Tower; explore the surrounding historic centre.
· Book tower entry in advance if you plan to climb it.
· Leave some time for a relaxed lunch, coffee or gelato.
· Pisa is easy to combine with other Tuscan destinations such as Florence and Lucca. ❤️ Final Thoughts Pisa may be famous for one leaning tower, but the city offers much more than that single landmark. From the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli to the peaceful Arno River and charming Tuscan streets, Pisa is a place where history and everyday Italian life come together beautifully. Come for the Leaning Tower, stay for the charm of Pisa. 🇮🇹✨ #Pisa #PisaItaly #LeaningTowerOfPisa #ItalyTravel #VisitPisa #ExploreItaly #TuscanyTravel #PiazzaDeiMiracoli #PisaTower #ItalianTravel #Tuscany #EuropeTravel #TravelInspiration

Tuscany feels like the kind of place you don’t rush through. It’s a region of rolling hills, medieval towns, vineyards, Renaissance cities, cypress-lined roads and slow countryside mornings — where even the drive between destinations becomes part of the experience. Some places worth adding to your Tuscany journey: 🏛️ Florence — Renaissance art, historic streets and the iconic Duomo 🗼 Pisa — home to the famous Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli 🏰 Siena — medieval architecture and the beautiful Piazza del Campo 🌄 Val d’Orcia — one of Tuscany’s most photogenic countryside areas 🏘️ San Gimignano — a hill town known for its medieval towers 🍇 Chianti — vineyards, country roads and classic Tuscan scenery 🌿 Lucca — charming old-town streets surrounded by historic walls ✨ Montepulciano — hilltop views, elegant streets and traditional Tuscan atmosphere And Tuscany is just as memorable through food. 🤤 Try Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Pici al Ragù, Pappa al Pomodoro, Ribollita, Wild Boar Ragù, Crostini Toscani, Pecorino Toscano, Cantucci and Vin Santo. Some experiences make the journey even more special: 🍷 Visit a vineyard in Chianti 🚗 Drive the cypress-lined roads of Val d’Orcia 🍝 Join a Tuscan cooking class 🌅 Watch sunset over the countryside 🏡 Stay in a countryside agriturismo 🎨 Explore Florence’s museums and piazzas 🏰 Wander Siena and San Gimignano at golden hour ☕ Enjoy a slow café morning in a small Tuscan town For a 5D4N trip, a comfortable route could be: Day 1: Florence → Duomo → Ponte Vecchio → sunset city walk Day 2: Pisa → Lucca → old-town stroll Day 3: Siena → San Gimignano → countryside sunset Day 4: Chianti → Val d’Orcia → Pienza or Montepulciano Day 5: Slow café breakfast → local market → final Florence walk → departure The best part of Tuscany is often between the famous stops. It’s turning onto a quiet country road, finding a hilltop village you didn’t plan for, sitting outside with coffee, or watching the evening light fall across vineyards and cypress trees. 🤍 Tuscany isn’t just somewhere to visit. It’s somewhere to slow down and enjoy the journey itself. #Tuscany #TuscanyTravel #ItalyTravel #Florence #Pisa #Siena #ValDOrcia #SanGimignano #Chianti #Montepulciano #Lucca #ItalianCountryside #ItalyRoadTrip #ExploreItaly #VisitItaly

Fantastic stay and well recommended !!

Pisa gets major tourist vibes — everyone shows up, snaps their classic "holding up the tower" pic, and bounces. Don’t be *that* tourist! 😆 The Leaning Tower of Pisa is legit mind-blowing, but the whole Piazza dei Miracoli is one of the most stunning spots in Italy. Plus, the historic center, uni crowds, riverside strolls, and local food scene totally deserve at least a half-day (full day if you can). Let’s dive into how to crush your Pisa trip like a pro! ℹ️ Practical Visit Info 📍 Where to Find It: Pisa, Tuscany, Italy ✈️ Airport: Pisa International Airport (PSA) 🚆 Train Station: Pisa Centrale ⏰ Perfect Stay: 1 day or minimum 5–6 hours 🏛️ Must-Sees: Leaning Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto Monumentale 🎟️ Tower Climb: Timed ticket needed; book in advance on trip.com 👟 Heads Up: Nearly 300 stairs to the top — get ready for a workout 📸 Photo Tip: Sunrise or sunset = best lighting, fewer crowds 🍝 Eat These: Cecina, pappa al pomodoro, Tuscan pasta goodness 💡 Pro Tip: Don’t dip right after the main square — stroll into the historic heart for max vibes ⚠️ Rules: Big bags aren’t allowed in the tower — there’s a storage area nearby ✈️ How to Get from Pisa Airport Downtown Airport is SO close to the city 🙌 The PisaMover whisks you from the airport to Pisa Centrale in like, three minutes. From there, it’s an easy 25–30 minute walk through historic streets to the Leaning Tower. Honestly, the walk is half the fun and a great intro to Pisa! 🗼 Is the Leaning Tower Overhyped? Nope! Sure, you’ve seen a million pics, but the real deal is SO much better. Started in 1173, the tower leans because of soft ground — an accidental icon! Walk all the way around; the lean looks completely wild from different angles. 🪜 Tower Climb: Should You Do It? Totally yes (unless stairs or heights scare you). The climb is trippy — you literally FEEL the lean 😳, and the marble steps are worn by centuries of visitors. Views from the top are next-level: Pisa and Tuscan hills for days. Don’t forget: Tickets are timed, bags must be stored, and there’s no elevator — so prep for a workout! ⛪ Pisa’s Cathedral: Don’t Just Walk By! Everyone’s focused on the tower, but the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a showstopper — striped marble, mosaic ceilings, ancient columns, and Pisano’s pulpit. It’s THE heart of the Piazza dei Miracoli. The tower? Just its bell tower! 🔊 The Baptistery — Epic Sound Surprise Outside: fancy domes. Inside: not as flashy, but the acoustics are insane. If you catch staff demonstrating the echo, it’ll literally send chills — one voice = a whole choir. Don’t miss it! ⚰️ Camposanto: Chill Escape Need a breather? Camposanto Monumentale is peaceful, with Gothic cloisters and faded frescoes. Way less crowded. Take your time here — it’s perfect for slowing down. 📸 How to Score That Iconic Pisa Pic Yes, do the tower pose. No shame! The best part? Watching everyone around you try to get the perfect shot 😂 Want something new? Frame the tower from behind the cathedral or Baptistery, or catch those marble reflections at golden hour. 🚶 Beyond Piazza dei Miracoli — Where the Real Pisa Happens Day-trippers miss out by not exploring more! Wander Via Santa Maria to Piazza dei Cavalieri, then lose yourself in Borgo Stretto’s student-packed cafes, shops, and local hangouts. This is the authentic Pisa vibe. 🏛️ Piazza dei Cavalieri: Underrated Gem Renaissance grandeur, Medici history, wild Palazzo della Carovana façade (sgraffito galore!) — it’s the hub of the Scuola Normale Superiore, and only steps from the main monuments. 🌊 Arno Riverfront = Insta Heaven Walk Lungarni streets lining the Arno! Colourful facades, epic sunsets, and don’t miss the tiny Santa Maria della Spina church (it’s so cute it looks fake). 🍕 What to Eat in Pisa (Don’t Fall for Tourist Traps!) Skip the generic tourist restaurants near the tower. Head toward the center and try: – Cecina (chickpea pancake) – Pappa al pomodoro (tomato bread soup) – Ribollita (veggie stew) – Pici & pappardelle pasta – Tuscan charcuterie, pecorino cheese, crostini – Gelato (obvious, but necessary) Cecina = fast, cheap, and everywhere. 🍷 Where to Eat? Go Where the Locals Go! Walk 10–15 mins toward the university zone. Busy with students = guaranteed good eats. Empty spots with aggressive staff? Pass! 🚆 Pisa Day Trip Hack Pisa is super easy to pair with other Tuscan legends. Florence → Pisa by train is about an hour, and Lucca’s close by for a totally different vibe. Don’t go wild with Florence + Pisa + Lucca + Cinque Terre in 1 day — quality > quantity! 📸 Best Photography Hotspots Arrive early to dodge crowds. Snap the whole Piazza dei Miracoli from a distance, use cathedral arches to frame the tower, circle the Baptistery for unique angles. Borgo Stretto = street shots. Arno for reflections. The tower’s lean shows differently from every side! 💡 Top Tips for a Next-Level Visit – Reserve tower tickets in advance – Get there before the day-tour flood – Store bags EARLY – Explore more than just the tower – Walk into central Pisa after monuments – Eat away from tourist traps – Don’t skip Piazza dei Cavalieri – Chill by the Arno – Take your epic "holding up the tower" shot — embrace your inner tourist! ⚠️ What Not to Do – Don’t skip tower ticket reservations during busy times – Don’t lug big bags to the entrance – Don’t pull a drive-by visit (30 mins? Yikes!) – Don’t eat at the first spot across from the tower – Don’t ignore the cathedral/baptistery – Don’t climb restricted spots for pics – Watch your stuff in crowded spots – Don’t schedule your return train right after climbing 🌤️ When to Go? Spring + autumn = chef’s kiss for weather. Summer = crowds + heat, but epic sunsets. If you’re stuck with peak season (June–August), go super early or wander historic center midday. Winter’s quieter and yes, rainy days can make for dramatic, moody shots! ❤️ Final Thoughts Pisa is SO much more than a Leaning Tower selfie. Climb, explore the cathedral, test those acoustics, chill at Camposanto. Then ditch the main square, hit Piazza dei Cavalieri, stroll student hangouts, grab cecina, and wind down on the Arno. The Leaning Tower is the hook — *Pisa itself* is the real catch. 🇮🇹🗼🍝 #travel #pisa #travel2026

I already knew about this amazing island inhabited by locals, but this time I decided to try the Guest Guise 3 Star Lodge by Alessandra, a lady from Lucca who assisted us every step of the way—from booking direct flights from Malpensa to Male, arranging transfers, planning excursions, and organizing meals both on-site and during various outings. The sea was stunning, and as a fishing enthusiast, it was perfect for me. The local staff were discreet yet attentive to every detail, ensuring daily room cleaning and excellent service. I highly recommend it to everyone—great value for money. Looking forward to next time, Alessandra, and thank you for everything. Carlo Piccinno

Fattoria del Teso is a family‑run premium wine estate tucked into the rolling rural hills of Montecarlo, within the province of Lucca in northern Tuscany, an area celebrated for its distinct, under‑the‑radar local wine varieties. The working farm produces high‑end bottled wines, as stated on its branded delivery van, and welcomes visitors for immersive cellar experiences deep within its atmospheric ageing cellars. Beneath the estate grounds lies the long, dim barrel hall seen in the second photograph, lined with enormous traditional wooden oak barrels where the winery’s red wines slowly age over months and years. Long communal dining tables are regularly laid out right among these towering casks, hosting private tasting dinners and guided wine‑paired meals. It is a one‑of‑a‑kind setting, where guests sip the estate’s own vintages surrounded by the very barrels that shaped the wine’s flavour, far removed from busy tourist crowds of central Florence. Montecarlo di Lucca sits between Lucca and Pistoia, a quiet wine‑producing zone with its own controlled DOC wine designation, famous for crisp white blends and bold, earthy reds. Unlike the better‑known Chianti region further south, this part of Tuscany retains a laid‑back, authentic rural vibe, with small family estates that prioritise hands‑on, traditional winemaking methods. At Fattoria del Teso, visitors can book guided vineyard tours, walk through the grape‑growing fields, learn about their production process, and finish with a seated tasting — or the memorable barrel‑room dining experience set directly beside the ageing barrels. For travellers exploring Tuscany off the main trail, this hidden winery makes a perfect day trip from Lucca or Florence. Visits are mostly arranged by advance booking, as these barrel‑hall dining events are organised for pre‑booked groups rather than casual walk‑in guests. It offers a genuine glimpse into slow, local Tuscan rural life, combining fine wine, regional food and the dramatic, moody atmosphere of the historic underground cellar. Pro tips · Reservations are mandatory for cellar dinners and guided tours; arrange your visit well ahead via the winery official website · Combine your trip here with a visit to the walled historic city of Lucca, roughly a 30‑minute drive away · The Montecarlo DOC region produces wonderful lesser‑known wines; ask your host to walk you through the estate’s different varietals #Fattoriadelteso #vineyard #winery #tuscany

Andrea, our driver and guide, took us to Pisa and Lucca on a day trip from Florence. His professionalism and great attitude were appreciated by everyone. He shared educational links via WhatsApp, which highlights his effort to go above and beyond for an enjoyable experience.

📍 Place: Siena, Lucca & Matera, Italy ✨ What it felt like: Each city has its own personality. Siena's steep medieval streets, Lucca's peaceful Renaissance walls, and Matera's ancient stone neighborhoods all encourage a slower pace. I found that respecting local traditions made every experience feel more authentic. 👀 What stood out: Comfortable shoes quickly became my best travel companion, especially in Siena and Matera with their endless hills and stone steps. Lucca was perfect for walking and cycling, but sharing paths with locals made the experience much more pleasant. I also enjoyed trying regional specialties instead of ordering the same dishes everywhere—every city had flavors that reflected its history. 💡 Exclusive tip: Check restaurant opening hours before heading out for lunch, avoid driving into ZTL (restricted traffic) zones, and don't rely entirely on Google Maps in medieval streets. Sometimes following the signs—or asking a local—is the quickest way to discover hidden corners. ❤️ Personal feeling: These beautiful cities reminded me that slow travel is the most rewarding. Taking time to respect local customs, wander quiet streets, and enjoy each destination at its own rhythm created some of my favorite memories in Italy. #Italy #Siena #Lucca #Matera #Tuscany #Basilicata #TravelTips #TripMoments #HistoricCities #SlowTravel #travel2026#travel#couplestrip#thingstodo#familytravel#citydaytours

Honestly, the most charming way to experience Florence isn’t rushing through the sights but immersing yourself in the everyday folds of this old city, moving at the local pace✨ July is peak season, no doubt, but if you avoid the crowds at the main attractions and try a different approach, the whole city feels completely different! 🗺️ Core idea: split Florence into "two cities" Many people treat Florence as one whole, but it can actually be divided into— North bank city: north of the Arno River, home to the cathedral, Uffizi, and Accademia Gallery—this is "classic Florence" South bank city: the Oltrarno area, where the Pitti Palace, Boboli Gardens, and Santo Spirito Church are located—this is "everyday Florence" In July, it’s best to spend the first three days exploring the north bank, the last two days relaxing on the south bank, with a day trip in between. This pace is just right—not tiring or rushed. 📍 North bank city: efficiently cover the highlights without regrets 🔹 Accademia Gallery → Only the David statue is worth the line! In July, aim for the 8:15 AM first entry, head straight to David, and leave quickly. 30–40 minutes is enough. Tickets cost €16 (peak season). Booking on the official site adds a €4 fee but is definitely worth it. 🔹 Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore → Entry to the cathedral is free but lines are long. In July, buy the dome combo ticket for €18 to skip the line and get both in one go. Inside the dome, Vasari’s The Last Judgment is breathtaking when you look up. The 360-degree view over the red rooftops is a mental snapshot you won’t forget. 🔹 Uffizi Gallery → As mentioned earlier, afternoon tickets cost €16. One tip: head to the second floor first! The terrace at the end of the second floor faces the Palazzo Vecchio tower and is the best photo spot in the Uffizi. Many visitors miss it. 🔹 Piazza della Signoria → Free outdoor sculpture collection. Just stroll by in the evening. The bronze statue of Perseus under the lights is more dramatic than during the day. 📍 South bank city: the right way to enjoy July Cross the Ponte Vecchio and head south. The tourist crowds drop sharply. This is where you should settle in July👇 🌿 Boboli Gardens → Included in the Uffizi combo ticket valid for three days. This vast 45,000-square-meter Italian garden is stunning in July, especially the cypress avenue and lemon house. Spend an afternoon here, take three hours to stroll slowly, bring a book, and sit by the fountain. This is Italian living. 🏛️ Pitti Palace → The Medici family’s palace, even bigger than the Uffizi but with only a tenth of the visitors. The Palatine Gallery is packed with Raphael and Titian masterpieces. Escape the July heat in the palace’s air conditioning and enjoy the art—pure bliss. 🎭 Santo Spirito Church → Designed by Brunelleschi, the interior proportions are so perfect even those with OCD will appreciate it. Every morning, the square in front hosts a market. Visit early in July, buy fresh fruit, and sit on the steps daydreaming. It’s like a movie scene. 🔨 Oltrarno artisan workshop district → Cross the old bridge and turn right. Around Santo Spirito, you’ll find many handmade leather workshops, paper studios, and antique restoration shops. These aren’t tourist souvenir shops! These are real artisan workshops. Step inside to watch craftsmen hand-stamp gold leaf. July sunlight streams through small windows, and dust dances in the beams. 🚂 Day trips radiating from Florence as your base Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station is perfectly located. Using it as a hub to explore nearby spots couldn’t be easier: 📌 → Siena: Regional train takes 1.5 hours, ticket €10.10. Every Wednesday in July, the Palio horse race takes place (the July 2 race is the highlight). The medieval city comes alive in a way you’ll never forget. 📌 → Pisa: Regionale Veloce train takes 1 hour 10 minutes, ticket €9.20. A half-day trip is enough. In 2026, climbing the Leaning Tower still requires lining up on-site or booking online. In July, book your time slot first, then explore the Piazza dei Miracoli. 📌 → Lucca: Train takes 1.5 hours, ticket €9.20. Cycling around the city walls is one of Tuscany’s most relaxing experiences. In July evenings, ride along the walls with olive groves and cypress trees in the distance and red rooftops nearby. 📌 → San Gimignano: No direct train. Take a bus from Poggibonsi. The whole trip takes about 2 hours, but the medieval "Manhattan" skyline of towers is stunning and worth the trip. Buy train tickets on the Trenitalia or Italo apps. E-tickets can be scanned on your phone at the station—no need to pick up paper tickets. 🌙 July nights are the real highlight In Florence, summer days are for sightseeing, but nights are for yourself— 🕯️ After 8 PM, head to Piazzale Michelangelo → Tour groups have left, leaving only independent travelers and locals. Sit on the steps and wait for full darkness. Watching the city lights come on one by one is even more moving than the sunset itself. 🍷 Find a riverside enoteca (wine bar) → Order a glass of Chianti Classico with a plate of crostini. The July evening breeze blows over the Arno River, carrying moisture and the distant chimes of church bells. 🌌 Friday night Uffizi → As mentioned, open until 11 PM. Seeing Caravaggio’s light and shadow paintings under the night sky is magical. The light in the paintings and the gallery lighting create a wonderful echo. 🎶 Outdoor concerts often happen in July → Summer performances take place in Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Croce, and Boboli Gardens. Many are free or low cost. Just check local posters when you arrive. 🏡 Advanced lodging options Besides the four areas mentioned earlier, if your budget allows, consider— 📌 Fiesole → A hilltop town above Florence, 20 minutes by bus. Staying here means waking up to panoramic night views of Florence. July temperatures on the hill are 5–6 degrees cooler than the city—a natural summer escape. 📌 San Frediano district → The deepest part of Oltrarno, full of local bars and restaurants. The nighttime atmosphere is unbeatable. Staying here feels like "living in Florence" rather than just "visiting Florence." One rule for choosing where to stay: in July, always pick a place with air conditioning! Many old stone buildings in the historic center are centuries old and can get uncomfortably hot at night without AC. 🎒 Pre-trip gear checklist → Comfortable flat shoes! Cobblestone streets + 20,000 steps a day = high heels are self-torture → Sun hat + sunglasses. July Mediterranean sun is no joke → A lightweight scarf. Churches require shoulders and knees to be covered. Without a scarf, you might be turned away → Portable charger. Navigation and photos drain your phone battery fast → A small canvas bag. Florence is crowded in summer. Backpacks are inconvenient in crowds. Crossbody bags are the most practical → A thin introductory book on Renaissance art. Flip through it in Boboli Gardens or monastery cloisters to deepen your experience 💡 Final thoughts There’s no need to rush Florence, especially in July. Instead of cramming five sights in one day and being too tired to do anything but lie down, plan just two things a day and spend the rest of the time getting lost—lost in the alleys of Oltrarno, lost deep in Boboli Gardens, lost among the stalls of the central market. Getting lost is Florence’s most precious experience🌿

Built in the 12th century, it began to tilt during construction due to the soft ground. After climbing the nearly 300 steps, you can overlook the entire Square of Miracles and the city of Pisa, experiencing the unique charm of this centuries-old tower. ⛪ Pisa Cathedral A key building in the Square of Miracles along with the Leaning Tower. Known for its Romanesque architectural style, its exterior is elegantly white, while the interior features exquisite marble decorations and magnificent ceilings, making it a masterpiece of medieval religious architecture. ⭕ St. John's Baptistery The largest baptistery in Italy, renowned for its circular structure and incredible acoustics. If you're lucky enough to catch a staff member demonstrating the echoes, the melodious resonance will surely leave a lasting impression. 🌿 Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) Legend has it that some of the soil was brought from the Holy Land in Jerusalem, earning it the status of a sacred cemetery. It is advisable to bring a hat, sunscreen, and drinking water. ⸻ ❤️ Recommended Travel Seasons 🌸 April–June: Comfortable weather and lush, green gardens make it perfect for strolling and photography. ☀️ September–October: Pleasant temperatures and relatively fewer tourists make this the best time to visit Pisa. 🍂 October–November: Autumn colors add a warm hue to the ancient city, ideal for an in-depth Tuscan adventure. ⸻ Pisa is more than just a city where you "take a picture holding up the Leaning Tower" and leave; it's a cultural ancient city with nearly a millennium of history. If you have a free day in your Tuscany itinerary, why not slow down and spend a full day in Pisa? You will find it to be far more extraordinary than you imagined.

When planning a trip to Tuscany, most people immediately think of Florence or Siena. But if you want to experience authentic Italian charm without the overwhelming crowds, Lucca is the ultimate destination. Enclosed entirely by massive Renaissance walls, stepping into this city feels like entering a peaceful, perfectly preserved secret. One of the most breathtaking moments of my trip was taking in the panoramic view over Lucca's endless sea of terracotta roofs and distant mountains. To get this view, you have to climb! The city is famous for its historic towers, but the absolute highlight is Torre Guinigi. Looking up from the narrow, winding streets, it’s a surreal sight to see ancient holm oak trees growing right on top of the towering brick structure! Another unforgettable spot is the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Unlike traditional square plazas, this one is a perfect oval. It was built directly over the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Today, the yellow historic houses curve beautifully around the space, making it the perfect spot to grab an espresso and simply people-watch. Lucca is often called the "City of a Hundred Churches." The Duomo di San Martino is a must-see, with its stunning, intricately carved marble columns and striking asymmetrical facade. The peaceful interior, with its massive stone arches, offers a quiet retreat from the sunlit streets. 💡 Essential Tips for Your Lucca Adventure: · Rent a Bicycle: The wide, tree-lined path on top of the ancient city walls goes all the way around Lucca. Renting a bike and riding the full circuit is an absolute must-do! · Climb for the View: Whether it's Torre Guinigi or Torre delle Ore, be prepared for a steep climb. The metal stairs and historic brick shafts are an adventure in themselves, but the view is worth every step. · Take It Slow: Lucca is perfectly flat (rare for Tuscan towns!), making it incredibly walkable. Don't rush; let yourself get lost in the charming alleys. Have you ever seen a medieval tower with actual trees growing on top of it? Last summer, I travelled to Lucca for a wedding — but I left completely enchanted by the city itself. Tucked away in the heart of Tuscany, Lucca feels like a secret wrapped in ancient stone. Surrounded by perfectly preserved Renaissance walls, the entire old town sits peacefully within its historic embrace. I remember walking along the top of those tree-lined ramparts, looking out over terracotta rooftops glowing in the golden summer light, thinking: this can’t be real. Inside the walls, everything slows down. The streets are vibrant but never chaotic. Colourful shutters frame centuries-old buildings. Tiny restaurants spill out into cobbled lanes, their chalkboard menus promising fresh pasta and local wine. Laughter drifts through warm evening air as locals gather in lively piazzas. It felt intimate, romantic — like stepping into a film set where every corner holds a new detail to admire. In between wedding celebrations, I wandered without a plan — which is exactly how you should experience Lucca. One morning, drawn in by the scent of fresh pastry and espresso, I slipped into a small local café tucked away from the busier squares. No fuss. No crowds. Just locals enjoying their morning ritual. I ordered a pistachio-filled croissant. It arrived warm and golden, delicately dusted with sugar. The first bite was pure magic — crisp, buttery layers giving way to the smoothest, richest pistachio cream. It was sweet without being heavy, indulgent yet perfectly balanced. Sitting there in the soft Tuscan sunlight, I realised this was the kind of travel moment you can’t plan — the simple, sensory memories that stay with you long after you return home. The wedding was beautiful. Truly unforgettable. But Lucca? Lucca quietly stole the spotlight. If you’re heading to Tuscany — whether for a celebration or simply chasing that Italian summer dream — don’t overlook this walled gem. Sometimes the places you least expect end up being the ones you remember most. #lucca #tuscany #italytravel #hiddengem #tuscanyitaly #walledcity #europesummer #foodiemoments #travelstory #tripmoment

The city of lords, the treasure town of Lucca The history of Lucca dates back to 180 BC, founded by the Etruscan Etruscans, today Lucca, although just a small city, was once also an independent republic for over five hundred years! As early as the 12th century, Lucca became an autonomous city-state due to the developed silk trade, and established an independent republic in 1314! The Walls of Lucca (Fig. 15). It is the grandest city wall in Italy! Built in the 16th century, it took 150 years to build the city wall is 12 meters high, 4.2 kilometers long, and 10 spade-shaped fortresses. What's more special is that the city wall is full of trees, which is like a forested avenue! The Tower of Guineve (Fig. 1-5). There are actually seven oak trees planted on the 45-meter-high Torre Guinigi tower, and the oak tree represents power, the owner of the tower, Paolo Guinigi, who ruled Lucca for thirty years, it is said that after his death, the leaves on the tree fell off. Climb the Torre Guinigi tower and you can overlook the entire city of Lucca. The layers of red roofs are scattered high and low, and the ancient houses and simple countryside blend into one. It feels like the best state of human civilization and natural heaven and earth! Lucca Cathedral (Figure 6-11). It was built in the 8th century and expanded in the 11th century under the auspices of Bishop Anselmo de Baggio... The exterior facade is typical of Toscana characteristic Romanesque architecture, exquisite lace-like three-story arcade, neat, harmonious and graceful, and a closer look at each column and carefully decorated in color and carving, each one is different! Compared to the "magnificence" of Modena Cathedral and the "sublime" closer to later Gothic, the "elegantness" of Lucca Cathedral is closer to the later Renaissance style! The porch reliefs are also wonderful, with San Martino's life and the zodiac on both sides of the door, and a row of holy apostles on the lintel, the relief on the left door arch is the scene of the birth and crucifixion of Christ... The interior of the church was rebuilt in the 14th-15th centuries, the arcade decoration on the two side corridors has shown a very delicate Gothic style, coupled with the light change of stained glass, gradually become light and transparent The Volto Santo Jesus Crucifixion wood sculpture in the church's collection is from the 8th-9th centuries, said to be the object of pilgrimage, although the posture is a bit stiff, but the face exudes a mysterious sorrow... The fresco on the top of the semicircular arch of the altar is the "Trinity Surrounded by Saints" painted by Giovanni Coli and Filippo Gherardi in 1678, typical of the Renaissance style... There is a beautiful sculpture in the small hall next to it! A marble mausoleum carved by Siena master Jacppo delle Quercia in 1407 for Ilaria del Carretto, wife of Paolo Guinigi, the owner of the tree-planted tower! This beautiful lady was only 24 years old when she died, and the entire sculpture still exudes lifelike skin shine and elegant temperament, it feels like she is just sleeping! Palace of Mansi (Figs. 16-17). A property purchased by the Mansi family in 1616, the luxurious Baroque decor once again proves the former glory of Lucca City... The Palace's most luxurious music hall, the Music Hall, was designed for the wedding of Carlo Mansi and Eleonora Pepoli in 1689. It features wet murals drawn by Gian Gioseffo del Sole... The splendid neoclassical style bedroom was used for weddings that year... The several rooms next to it are covered with ornate Flemish tapestries and curtains, which are truly luxurious to the naked eye... The Hall of Mirrors is a neoclassical theme style from the early 18th century... Puccini House (Figure 18-19) "A sunny day" in "Madame Butterfly", "No one sleeps tonight" in "Turandot", "Starlight" in "Tosca", "Cold little hands" in "La Bohème"... the great opera composer Pucci ni’s former residence, where she once lived, pianos, manuscripts, photographs, medallions, full of memories…and the costumes of Turandot’s 1926 premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York were truly the most meaningful artifacts in the show! Ancient Roman Amphitheater Square (Fig. 20) Built on an ancient Roman amphitheater, the houses in the square are still built in the shape of an amphitheater. The square is full of restaurants, and on the path into the square there is a Gelato founded in 1927, delicious!

It's cheap on weekdays, and there is a free drink bar, two convenience stores downstairs. reception is open 24 hours, night flights can check in. The instructions are clear for Hong Kong people. Being able to do laundry is key, bringing a few less allows you to buy more.
